3 BIG SOUTH PRESEASON POLL Rk. Team (first) Points 1. But the record, Big South Tournament title and NCAA Tournament berth are in the past now. However, the nucleus of that 2016 squad returns as five starters are back including two preseason All-Big South selections along with six other letterwinners. Entering his second season at the helm, head coach Tom Mendoza and the team embarks on a comparable mission to last season. We have a similar goal in mind as we did last year build throughout the year so we are peaking in November, Mendoza said. Our pre-conference isn t going to allow us to win any matches where we can play less than our best and come out with a win. But I do think we are capable of coming out and winning each game if we play to our potential. The girls in our program want to be challenged and that s the type of culture we are trying to build. Even though the goals haven t changed much the amount of experience on the team has. The more times you can see a team like a North Carolina, the more comfortable you are playing that level of volleyball, Mendoza continued. That s another reason why we ve tried to schedule very competitively so we can get comfortable playing those teams. With the experience and leadership provided by the program s three seniors Haley Barnes, Carly Jimenez and Amy Pilat Mendoza expects the Panthers to be able to navigate a tough non-conference slate while staying the course. Meanwhile, he s seen other experienced players like Molly Livingston, Jordan Hefner and Jenna Smith display leadership qualities in support of the seniors. This season I really think that our leadership is spread out between multiple players and multiple classes, Mendoza concluded. That should allow it to be a strength of the team. SETTERS Behind the duo of Jimenez and Smith, the Purple & White averaged assists per set, which was good for second in the Big South. Both players return, but this year with more experience and another offseason of improvement under their belts. Last year, we had two really good setters who were both kind of learning on the fly in terms of having the spotlight more on them, Mendoza explained. But this year, I think both are more comfortable and are pushing themselves and aren t afraid to make mistakes. After primarily backing up Haley Barnes Gabi Mirand during her first two seasons at HPU, Jimenez stepped into the lineup averaging 5.43 assists and 1.66 digs per set. While those numbers basicly matched her averages from the previous season, she almost doubled her assist (366 to 662) and dig (109 to 202) totals from Meanwhile, as Jimenez was moving into a bigger role, Smith was getting her first taste of college athletics. Now a sophomore, Smith has become a more steady influence on the offense. Despite her youth, Smith led the team in assists (5.60/set) and added 1.85 digs per set on the year. Carly is about everything you can ask for from a senior leader, Mendoza said. Jenna could take more of a leadership role, but doesn t need to with our seniors so she s doing a great job being steady like we ask her to be. DEFENSIVE SPECIALISTS/LIBERO Last fall, the Panthers were forced to replace two players who amassed 1,000 career digs in Annemarie and Wavie Chin. Pilat stepped into the libero role for the regular season racking up 4.11 digs per set to place sixth in the conference. However, an injury forced her to miss the postseason where Megan Kennedy replaced her for the stretch run. While there were bright spots when Pilat won Big South Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 26 and when the team held 12 opponents below a.150 hitting percentage, the squad struggled to find consistency throughout the year. Defensively we have a deep group, Mendoza said. I think it s a position that I think could show the most HighPointPanthers.com 3

4 improvement from last year. At times our ball control was really good, but this year we re hoping to build more consistency. Each of our returners has improved and we ve added two that can raise the level of the group. Along with Pilat, junior Rachel Kordonowy returns after obtaining court time in eight matches in her first collegiate season. Similarly, sophomore Jenna Weidner figures to step into a bigger role in her second season in the Purple & White. Amy played last year at libero until she injured her shoulder and came back and had a great spring and we ll rely on her for her play as well as her leadership, Mendoza continued. Rachel is a player who has continued to impress us with her consistency and she s made some plays in practice that I don t think I saw her make last year and if she continues on that path she could see an increased role. Jenna came back and has looked really solid. She may be our most athletic defender and now she s working to get her serve receive to where it needs to be. Along with the trio of returners the Panthers welcome freshmen Abby Bottomley and Kassidy Dickerson to the program. Bottomley the 2016 Gatorade Virginia Player of the Year and Dickerson a three-time All-North Carolina selection enter the fray after highly decorated prep careers. Abby had a lot of success in high school and club and her potential is really high, Mendoza concluded. We ve been working to get her more comfortable at left back after she played middle back in high school, but the sky is the limit for her talents. Kassidy has come in and really picked up what we emphasize and has improved each session and is a great teammate. Both of the freshmen will add depth and talent to our back row. OUTSIDE HITTERS Barnes enters her final year at High Point at 10th in HPU s D-I era in career kills. Similarly, the Neenah, Wis. product needs just 142 digs to join Audie Gonzalez as the only two Division I Panthers to amass 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs as a Panther. The highly decorated three-time captain has been named to the All-Big South First Team each of the past two seasons while picking up the league tournament MVP in Haley has had a lot of playing time and success, but we think that this could be her best year, Mendoza said of the team s kills leader from each of the past two seasons. She s such a well-rounded player, but there are some parts of her game that we want to bring up to be as elite as our areas. Joining Barnes in the rotation on the left side are juniors Abby Broadstreet and Adeline Ellis. A season after finishing fifth on the team with 1.48 kills per set, Broadstreet figures to factor strongly into the rotation. The Brea, Calif. product came on late posting 2.0 kills and 1.92 digs per set during the team s run to the Big South Tournament title. For depth after the graduation of Megan Kennedy, Mendoza went back to the state of Kansas to get Ellis, a Sunflower State native who spent her first two college seasons at Pitt. The transfer will immediately present HPU with talent, experience and options at the position. Abby played a big role through the conference tournament and the NCAA Tournament and has looked better each day through the preseason, Mendoza continued. And Adeline, who came in during the spring semester, has looked more and more comfortable playing without thinking and looks like she s been part of this group for a while. RIGHT SIDES The duo of Tylman and since-graduated Savannah Angel presented options for HPU s attack and length for the team s solid block last fall. Tylman, a Charlotte, N.C. native, closed 2016 strong earning a spot on the Big South All-Tournament Team. Overall, Tylman was third on the team in kills (2.12/set) and blocks (90) during her first collegiate season at full health. Katie had a really good start to the year and a strong finish, Mendoza said. I think she really wants to be great and she has the tools so we are working to get that greatness out of her. Meanwhile, the battle to replace Angel in the rotation comes down to redshirt-sophomore Olivia Barr and freshman Katie Doering. Olivia has moved over and spent more time on the right side where she played in club, Mendoza said. She s done a good job and this will be an important year for her to try to earn a bigger role and learn what it takes to be successful at this level. Katie Doering has come in and looks more comfortable with our tempo and system and no we re just trying to adjust to her strengths to help put her in a position to be successful. Barr, who had been stuck behind a deep group on the left side, flashed in the Big South Tournament semifinals with two kills and a block against Liberty after appearing in 10 regular season matches. On the other hand, Doering is completing her first collegiate preseason after breaking the Georgia state record for career blocks and leading the state in hitting percentage three times. MIDDLE BLOCKERS On a team with depth and talent at every position, the middle blockers may be the most talented collection on the roster. The dynamic duo of Livingston and Hefner enter their third season as starters in the middle. Livingston a 2016 all-conference first teamer has led the team in hitting percentage each of her first two seasons. As a result, the Sun Prairie, Wis. product possesses a career attack percentage of.326, which is the highest of any Panther with at least 1,000 career attempts. While Livingston takes care of the offense, Hefner is the blocking specialist. The junior racked up 143 blocks last season 33 more than HPU s previous single season record and 23 more than Livingston. The Floridian is far from a one-trick pony, however, averaging 1.40 kills per set in her career and boasts a.264 career hitting percentage. With Jordan and Molly playing so much time the last two years we ve really tried to make sure that they are not plateauing, Mendoza said. We re working with them to show them they haven t reached their peak even if they have a lot of experience and success on the court. Learning behind the pair of juniors, Ali Thanhauser enters her first season in the Triad after a solid career at North Raleigh Christian Academy. Ali has come in as a freshman and has done a great job of picking up our system, Mendoza concluded. She s very selfless and is a great teammate, but has done well in practice and picking up the speed of college volleyball. Katie Tylman 4 HighPointPanthers.com

5 TOM MENDOZA Head Coach Alma Mater: Lewis 08 First season at HPU: 2016 Record at HPU: Big South Record: 11-5 Overall head coaching record: High Point University athletic director Dan Hauser has named Tom Mendoza as the 11th head coach - and fourth in Division I - in the volleyball program s history in May of In his first season in the Triad, Mendoza led the Panthers to a Big South Championship title, the program s second NCAA Tournament and posted the third most wins (23) in HPU s Division I era. Led by All-Big South First Team selections Haley Barnes and Molly Livingston, the Purple & White won at least a share of all four of their non-conference tournaments before going 11-5 and tying for second in the Big South. Along with Barnes and Livingston, Jordan Hefner was named to the All-Big South Second Team after breaking High Point s single-season blocks record (143) while the team also broke the program s mark (290.0). Rounding out the four regular season award winners, Savannah Angel garnered honorable mention accolades. In the Big South Championship, HPU bested No. 6 UNC Asheville 3-1 before outlasting host and No. 2-seeded Liberty in a five-set thriller in the semifinals. On Championship Sunday, Tournament MVP Haley Barnes posted 20 kills and 10 digs in a 3-1 triumph over No. 1 Radford. The win sent High Point to the NCAA Tournament where it fell in three sets to No. 7 North Carolina. Mendoza comes to HPU after six seasons at Creighton University, most recently serving as the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator over the past three campaigns. During that six-year stretch, Mendoza helped guide the Bluejays to six conference titles, five NCAA Tournament bids and a berth in the NCAA Sweet 16 in During Mendoza s time in Omaha, the Bluejays recorded a (.714) mark in conference play en route to the six league titles four in the Big East and two in the Missouri Valley. The team made its first NCAA Tournament appearance in program history in 2010 and rattled off a string of five NCAA berths in six seasons from there. Prior to Mendoza s arrival at Creighton, the program had compiled just two 20-win seasons in 16 tries, but produced five such campaigns in his six years on the sidelines. Creighton, which had never appeared in the AVCA Top 25 prior to 2012, has spent 49 weeks in the poll over the past four seasons. Meanwhile, Mendoza helped the team claim a 50-8 record in Big East competition, winning both the regular season and tournament crowns in 2014 and HighPointPanthers.com The Buffalo Grove, Ill. native has proven to be a distinguished recruiter, most recently bringing in PrepVolleyball s 11th-rated class for the 2015 cycle. Mendoza, who worked directly with the middle blockers and setters for the Bluejays, aided middle blocker Kelli Browning in becoming a three-time AVCA All-American. Likewise, Lauren Smith, another middle blocker, garnered AVCA Honorable Mention All-America accolades in 2015 under his tutelage. Similarly, Mendoza who was a collegiate volleyball setter - coached two AVCA All-American setters in Michelle Sicner and Megan Bober. Bober earned MVC Player of the Year honors in 2012 when the Bluejays posted 17-1 record in league play. Mendoza was hired at Creighton in June of 2010 after spending the 2009 season at the University of Evansville. While with the Purple Aces, Mendoza trained the setters, outside hitters and primary passers. He also was a key cog in the recruiting process for the Purple Aces program. He arrived at Evansville after spending two seasons as the volunteer assistant at Michigan State. During his time with the Spartans, the program appeared in the 2007 NCAA Sweet 16. Mendoza also served on the Michigan State volleyball summer camp staff in 2007 and 2008 and directed Spartan Session volleyball camps and clinics. A three-year letter winner in volleyball at Newman University and a one-year letter winner at Lewis University, Mendoza put together an outstanding Tom Mendoza collegiate career. He was a 10-time Mid-America Men s Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference Setter of the Week and was a three-time all-conference selection. He also was named an NAIA All-American. Mendoza received his bachelor s degree in management information systems from Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill. 5

6 TAYLOR UNROE Assistant Coach First season at HPU: 2017 Record at HPU: 0-0 Big South Record: 0-0 High Point University volleyball head coach Tom Mendoza has named Taylor Unroe as the program s assistant coach for the 2017 season. Unroe joined the Panthers on the heels of a season that saw HPU win the Big South Championship and earn a trip to the NCAA Tournament. I was really impressed and humbled by the strength of the candidates who applied to be part of our program and that s a very positive sign for the direction of High Point University volleyball, head coach Tom Mendoza said. From the onset, Taylor stood out as someone who both matched the values of our program and is also able to help us take another step forward. Unroe comes to the Triad after serving as an assistant coach at George Mason University. During her two seasons in Fairfax, Va., she served as the defensive coordinator and passing coach. Under Unroe s tutelage, the Patriots led the Atlantic 10 in digs for the first time since joining the A-10. Likewise, she coached the Patriots to its top finish in blocks since joining the new conference. Meanwhile, Catie Espinosa was ranked in the nation in digs under the watchful eye of the former All-American libero. Taylor will be a great mentor for our student-athletes and she has the ability to help them achieve their potential on the court while relating to the challenges they ll face, Mendoza continued. As a former SEC Libero of the Year, Taylor will work very closely with our passing and defense, but she was also a great outside hitter before switching to libero at Florida. She s already had success improving those areas at George Mason and we feel those can be strengths of our team next fall. Similarly, Unroe is excited about the prospect of joining a program that is coming off of one of its best seasons ever. I want to thank Tom Mendoza for giving me this opportunity to join the High Point family, Unroe said. His vision for continued success of the program is inspiring and I am looking forward to being a part of that. I knew from the first moment I drove through the front gates that High Point was the place for me. HPU s academics, student support and growth is outstanding. During her career at the University of Florida, Unroe became the program s first SEC Libero of the Year while garnering an All-America Honorable Mention accolade in She also brings championship-level experience to the program having led the Gators to three SEC Championship and four NCAA Tournament berths. It won t take long before the High Point Community learns what a special one they have in Taylor Unroe, UF head coach Mary Wise said. She brings a competitive energy and a love for the game that is contagious. Unroe graduated from UF with a bachelor s degree in Family, Youth and Community Science in One year later, she earned a master s degree in the same field. 6 HighPointPanthers.com
