Introduction Program Mission The primary mission of the volleyball program is to bring positive recognition to the school we represent (San Marcos High School) through a program built on concepts such as becoming effective communicators, creative problem solvers and contributing citizens through hard work and dedication. The focus is on the development of the student athlete. Ethical conduct and good sportsmanship will be expected from spectators, coaching staff and student athletes. The program supports and advocates for success in the class room, achievement of educational objectives and learning to live a positive and healthy lifestyle. Coaching Staff Biographies Head Varsity Coach Bobbie Jo Stall Bobbie Jo Stall s passion is sports and working with student athletes. She fell in love with volleyball at a young age and that has been her primary focus ever sense. She has immersed herself in coaching and playing and wouldn t have it any other way. She is the Girls Varsity and Boys JV Head Coach at San Marcos High School. She also coaches two teams and coordinates private lessons at SoCal Volleyball Club in San Marcos, California where she is the PR/Marketing Coordinator. As a coach, she has helped run numerous camps, clinics and has conducted many private lessons. As a player during high-school she was a 4 year letter winner on the volleyball team where she was also team captain and MVP. She was also a 3 year letter winner in basketball and a 1 year letter winner in both softball and track. She was recognized as an All-Avocado League player and was on the Union Tribune All-Academic Team. She played club volleyball at San Diego Volleyball Club. She went on to college and led the San Diego Mesa team to back-to-back, undefeated PCC Conference Championships and is the all-time hitting percentage leader. She finished her career at East Carolina University, a member of NCAA Division I s Conference USA. In 2008 she out-blocked and outhit all players at the C-USA volleyball tournament. She has a degree in Communication (Public Relations) from ECU. She also has a minor in Sports Studies, which is an all encompassing course of study that covered coaching theories, psychology, philosophy and physiology of sports, along with sports marketing.
She is very passionate about coaching and about the sport of volleyball. Volleyball has been such a positive force in my life. I am excited to give back to a sport that has given me so much. My goal is to create the same positive influence in young athletes lives. I value the hard work, commitment, and camaraderie that sports teach. I want to help instill those values into young people s lives. I look forward to being a part of building a competitive tradition and volleyball culture at San Marcos. I am honored to be part of this program and look forward to the future. - Coach Stall Head Junior Varsity Coach Nick Mercer Head Freshman Coach JT Reagan JT Reagan brings over 30 years of coaching experience to the freshman program. Coach Reagan was a physical education teacher and started his coaching career at Torrey Pines High School. He then went on to San Dieguito Academy for 12 years and coached all levels for both girls and boys. He then was at Carslbad High School, Missions Hills High School, Mission Vista High School, Mira Mesa High School, Our Lady of Peace Academy and Uni City High School amongst others. He currently coaches club volleyball at SoCal Volleyball Club where he specializes in building a strong foundation for novice players in the 6 key skills of volleyball (passing, setting, serving, defense, blocking and hitting). We are so fortunate to have this wealth of knowledge and experience that Coach Reagan brings and know he will be the perfect coach for the job. Varsity Assistant Coach Taryn Salcedo Taryn is a 2011 graduate of Nevada Union High School in Grass Valley, CA and played club volleyball for NCVC. She now plays for the Cal State San Marcos Cougars volleyball team as a setter. She is studying human development and intends to become a nurse. She is an assistant coach at SoCal Volleyball Club and brings great influence and knowledge to the setting position for our student athletes. 5 Cell #: (760) Head Freshman Coach JT Regan Home #: (760) Assistant Coaches: TBD Player Expectations and Accountability Health and Student Athlete Development Certainly having fun and learning to work collaboratively with a team is of great value. Equally as important is learning to live a healthy lifestyle, one that hopefully builds lifetime habits of good diet and regular exercise. Diet Maintaining an overall healthy diet not only offers your body the energy and nutrition that it needs to function, but it also helps you lead a long healthy life well past your days as a high school athlete. When playing sports, stay away from anything that is high in sugar, starches, fats and caffeine. Gravitate towards fresh fruits, vegetables, healthy proteins and carbohydrates. Exercise The benefits of exercise are undeniable. Exercise helps to control weight, helps combat health conditions and diseases, improves mood and cognitive function, boosts energy and regulates sleeping habits. The bottom line is that exercise and physical activity are a great way to feel better, gain health benefits and have fun. Time Management One of the greatest benefits of sports participation is learning responsibility, dependability and hard work. Time management is an important key in balancing school, sports, family and other obligations. As part of the volleyball program, time management is a concept that will be strongly emphasized. As coaches and role models we are committed to helping the student athletes strategize and manage their responsibilities.
In the Classroom: Grades and the Student Athlete The positive effects of sports participation on a student are undeniable. The physical, emotional and psychological gains are perpetual. However, participants are first and foremost a student. Participation in a sport should compliment rather than interfere with educational necessities. There is a mandatory GPA of 2.0 for all student athletes at San Marcos High School to participate in competition. Failure to achieve this GPA, which is indicated in periodic progress reports, will result in the student athlete being withheld from any competitions or scrimmages until the following progress report indicates the necessary GPA. Individual coaches have the full discretion and right to hold higher expectations than the minimum for their respective teams and hold individuals accountable. Appropriate consequences will follow the failure to meet those expectations. On the Court: Practice and Matches Practice Attendance Practice will be held 5 days a week during the season with the exception of game, scrimmage and tournament days, and mandatory holidays. Practice will begin at a set time, in which any necessary set up (i.e. putting up nets, getting out balls etc.) must be done BEFORE this start time. Additionally, all players must have on all the proper equipment (i.e knee pads, ankle braces/tape etc.) BEFORE the start time. Practice ends when the coach releases the players. Specifications vary by team and changes are at the discretion of individual coaches. All practices carry equal weight. Every practice is mandatory. Attendance for the full duration of the time is also mandatory. There are exceptions such as family/personal emergencies, matters regarding academic requirements (i.e. after school tests, tutoring etc.), medical appointments and illness. For the purposes of the SMHS Volleyball program, missing practice due to an illness requires a doctor s note. If you simply don t feel good, or had a bad day you still have to be present and participate to the best of your ability. If you are injured, you are also required to bring in a doctor s note to the athletic trainer or get a note from the trainers him/herself so we are aware of when you have been medically released to resume participation.
Failure to provide the proper documentation, or supply a legitimate reason for missing practice will require the individual to explain to the team why the practice was missed. If there is a second infraction the player will have a coach/parent meeting and will not be allowed to play for 2 games. A third infraction will result in the player being dropped from the team permanently. Practice Expectations Everyone is expected to come to practice in the proper attire and take off all jewelry before starting. Indoor court shoes that do not make skid marks on the floor, socks, knee pads, shorts and a t-shirt are required. Unacceptable items include spaghetti strap tanks, anything that exposes your midsection, bra or butt will not be acceptable. Practice is a learning environment and attention and respect is necessary. As coaches we assume that participants are playing to get better. Realize that everything a coach does, whether verbally, visually or kinesthetically is with the intention of bettering the team and the individual. During practice all players must listen intently to coaches directions, maintain eye contact and never engage in side conversations. Before, during and after communication between a coach and a player(s), a positive and respectful attitude must be maintained. Rolling eyes, talking back, complaining, making excuses or making any non-verbal gesture that indicates resistance are not behaviors of mature and responsible athletes. That kind of behavior is counterproductive to the goals of the team and the program. A simple yes coach is the best answer in any situation. Any further discussion should take place after practice in a one on one conversation. Life is full of choices and decisions and while we as coaches cannot make anyone do anything that they are unwilling to do, optimal effort during practice is always necessary. Refusal to do so negatively impacts the individual in a number of ways, such as loss of playing time. Home Matches Most home matches are scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m. All players from all teams are to be released at the time indicated on the play schedule and immediately head to the gym and begin set up. All players from all teams are required to help with set up. There needs to be two ball carts taken out, one for the home team and one for the visiting team. The balls are to be counted before the freshmen matches starts and after the varsity games concludes. All teams are required to sit in the bleachers as a team, support one another, and watch each others matches from the beginning to the end. The only
exception is that JV and varsity can begin warm-up prior to their respective matches during the 2 nd or 3 rd Frosh or JV set. If you go to the bathroom, or the snack bar etc. you must always go with a buddy. Failure to stay and watch will be counted as a missed practice. Away Matches Some away matches have buses, and some do not. Regardless, there will always be a central meeting time and place. For away matches with or without buses, players should meet at the proper lot 15 minutes after the release time for the bus or for carpool. The release time is indicated on the play schedule. If a player is not at the required meeting place at the required meeting time, the player must let a coach or fellow teammate know. If the player is not present at departure time, she will be left behind, unless other arrangements have been made, Transportation donations are the only way to fund bus transportation, so without them, we will not have buses. As in home games, all teams are required to watch each other s matches from the beginning to the end. Failure to stay and watch will be counted as a missed practice. If you come on the bus, you must leave on the bus. There will be forms available for special circumstances and alternative transpiration. Tournaments (See attached tournament guide) Note: There will typically be no buses for tournaments. Please arrive no later than 30 minutes prior to you first line of duty. All players must share refereeing responsibilities and rotate fairly. The system in which you do this is up to the respective teams and coaches. Failure to fulfill your duty (with a smile!!) will result in a missed practice. Accountability: Taking Responsibility for Your Own Actions For every action there is a consequence, and all players will be held at a very high standard when it comes to their conduct on and off the court. 1.) Be respectful of coaches, teammate and opponents. 2.) Be responsible for your actions as a student athlete. 3.) BE NICE! Have fun. Effective and Productive Communication
As a player you are solely responsible to know when games and practice are scheduled. There are numerous methods of communicating, e.g. checking the website, texting, ing or calling. When you do receive a message via text or , please acknowledge that you have received the message with a got it, or return the call if a phone call is made. It is integral to the program that the PLAYER communicates ahead of time with a coach if there are extenuating circumstances that cause them to miss a game or practice. They should also communicate with their coach when there are other physical or emotional issues that may interfere with their level of effort or concentration. 24 hour notice is preferred if the situation allows. Please leave no stones unturned with your coach. We have an open door policy. Any questions, comments and concerns are better out in the open, dealt with and addressed as soon as possible. As a young adult, the player is responsible for the line of communication with their respective coach. If an understanding is not reached, then a meeting can be held with the player, coach, parent or guardian and a third party. Parent Code of Conduct (see attached, sign and return)
