Forbes magazine recently ranked Jackson as one of America s top 150 cities for business and careers. Student Body: More than 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students from more than 40 states and 35 countries. 5 letter from the president Dear Friends of Union University Athletics: Thank you so much for your support of Union University athletics. A commitment to excellence is one of our four core values across the University best demonstrated in our numerous quality academic programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels. For 14 straight years, Union has been listed as a Top Tier University in the South by U. S. News and World Report. One of the fastest growing private institutions in the entire South, Union University continues to make strides in all aspects of our work, and athletics is no exception. For seven straight seasons, Union has been the recipient of the TranSouth Conference All-Sports Trophy. This recognition speaks well of all of our coaches and athletes. We salute all of those who serve Union university so faithfully in our Department of Athletics. 6 Director of athletics Tommy Sadler enters his 26th year of service at Union University, and the second in his role as the Director of Athle cs for Union. Sadler was named to this posi on a er serving the year as the ac ng athle cs director. He follows in the footsteps of Dr. David Blackstock, who had been Union s Athle c Director for the past 34 years. Sadler, a na ve of Jackson, is a 1972 graduate of South Side High School and a 1976 graduate of Union University. During his me at Union, Sadler played four years of baseball for the Bulldogs. In 1981, he received his Master of Educa on from the University of Memphis. His tenure at Union began in 1985 as director of public rela ons. A er a year in that role, he became the university s director of corporate and founda on support, a posi on he held for 10 years. In 1996, Sadler then moved into his previous role as associate director of athle cs. Sadler earned the Union University Staff Member of the Year in In 2010, Sadler was named the TranSouth Conference Athle c Director of the Year. Sadler has also been very ac ve in athle cs at the conference level. He is beginning his ninth year as the president of the TranSouth Conference, of which Union is a member. Prior to this me as president, he served the conference as its vice president. He is respected by all of our coaches, by those who support the athle c program and by the leadership of the university. At this transi onal me in the life of our athle c department, I know of no one be er to help us chart a future course for that department than Tommy Sadler. 8 head coach Kelly Ellio begins her first season as the head coach of the Union University volleyball program. Ellio becomes the third head coach of the Union volleyball program since its beginning in Kelly Elliott Head Volleyball Coach 1050 Union University Drive Jackson, TN Phone: Most recently, Ellio has been an Assistant Professor of Physical Educa on, Wellness and Sport at Union University from 2007 to the present. She will con nue to maintain a teaching load in the Union sports management program. Prior to becoming a full- me teacher, Ellio was a Resident Director at Union from in the McAfee Residence Complex. Ellio spent seven seasons ( ) as the assistant coach at King (Tenn.) College under head coach Susie Toomey. Toomey, the mother of Ellio, spent 25 years at King accumula ng a record, which is sixth in the NAIA in total wins and seventh in the NAIA in winning percentage for a coaching career. Ellio earned her undergraduate degree in Psychology from King College in 1995 where she graduated Magna Cum Laude. Ellio also holds two Masters degrees. The first was a Master of Educa on in Counseling from the University of Louisville (Ky.) in 1997, followed by a Master of Arts in Physical Educa on, Sports Management concentra on from East Tennessee State University in As a student-athlete, Ellio was a four-year starter on the volleyball team at King from She was voted into the King College Athle c Hall of Fame in 2008 as part of the 1994 volleyball team, the only volleyball team to be inducted thus far. Ellio earned numerous honors including Fellowship of Chris an Athletes Athlete of the Year in 1995, first team all-conference in 1993 and 1994, NAIA Scholar Athlete in 1993 and 1994, and earned NCCAA All-District and Scholar Athlete honors in 1993 and Ellio s teams were also very successful as both a player and as an assistant coach. She was a part of four conference championships as a player and seven conference tles as an assistant coach. During her years as assistant coach, she helped lead her team to two NAIA Na onal Tournaments, including one Na onal Team Sportsmanship Award. Ellio also won four NCCAA District Tournaments and played in four NCCAA Na onal Tournaments (two third-place finishes) as a player. Coach Ellio s desire is to see the members of the Union volleyball team grow as players, but more importantly, as young women. She views her role of coach as one to challenge and mentor team members spiritually, academically, and athle cally. Ellio and her husband, Michael, reside in Jackson and are the parents of Isaac and Anna. They are ac ve members of Englewood Bap st Church, where Michael serves as the Minister to Families with Children. 9 assistant coach & support staff Ariel Apolinario is in his first season as the assistant volleyball coach for the Union University program. Apolinario comes to Union a er a very successful playing career at Newman (Kansas) University and most recently, King (Tenn.) College. Apolinario is a 2010 graduate of King College with a degree in Spanish and a minor in coaching. Ariel Apolinario Assistant Volleyball Coach 1050 Union University Drive Jackson, TN Phone: aapolinario@uu.edu Apolinario accumulated a vast knowledge of coaching volleyball during his college years. From , he was a head coach in the Northeast Tennessee Volleyball Club. On his team of middle school girls, one-hundred percent of his players made their school s volleyball team. From , Apolinario travel throughout Texas and Flordia teaching volleyball skills and team camps during the summers. He worked at Rice (Texas) University, the University of Houston (Texas), University of North Texas, University of Texas and the University of Tampa (Fla.). In the summer of 2009, Apolinario worked as a camp instructor for the University of Miami (Fla.) basketball camp. Apolinario played two seasons at King where he was named all-conference, team MVP and team captain. At Newman, he was also an all-conference performer. Apolinario holds three records at King, including career kills, career blocks and career hi ng percentage. He was named Male Athlete of the Year at King (Tenn.) College during his senior season. In high school, Apolinario played volleyball and basketball at Miami Senior High School. He helped lead his basketball team to the A Florida State Title. He was a district tournament champion twice with basketball and once with volleyball. Apolinario was named first team All-Miami Dade, and was the Miami Dade County preseason player of the year. Born in Matanzas, Cuba, Apolinario is son of Carlos Apolinario and Laudelina Vera. He has a sister, Misleideis and a brother, Anniel. 11 The Union University volleyball program begins their season under the leadership of Kelly Ellio, in her first season as the head coach. Ellio is the third head coach for Union volleyball since the program s beginning in Ellio is the daughter of, and former assistant coach for, NAIA volleyball coach Susie Toomey, who went in 25 years at King (Tenn.) College. season outlook The Union Lady Bulldogs return four award winning starters from last season s team that posted a record and a runner-up finish in the conference tournament. Union lost one senior, se er Ka e Adams to gradua on, and the libero to transfer. Union has three seniors this year including Marcela Madeira, Kelsey Duling and Heather Lieberman. All three players were selected to the all-conference team in 2009, while Madeira was also named an NAIA All-American. This group will look to be the leadership that helps Union return to the na onal tournament as they did in Three juniors highlight the roster including returning starter Anna Sims. Sims was named an all-conference player in Newcomer Emmie Moroski will take on the role of se er in Cassidy O Hair, another newcomer, will help add depth on offense and defense. The sophomore class is made up of three players, all returning from successful freshman seasons. Lauren Sprouse, Shelby Swink and Caroline Robbins will look to con nue to tribute to the success of Union s program. Jami Humphries is the lone freshman on the roster. She will get early opportuni es to build her skills and contribute to the program s success over her career. Union will face a tough schedule this season with six games against teams that were ranked or receiving votes in the final poll last season. Union has six matches against teams that advanced to the na onal tournament last season, including a matchup at semifinal contender Lee (Tenn.). Union looks to return to the NAIA Na onal Tournament for the third me in program history and the first since Last season, Union finished just one win short of returning with their loss in the conference tournament championship game. 12 volleyball players #3 Heather Lieberman 5-8 Senior Outside Hi er Hometown: Rochester, New York Previous School: Genesee CC Birthday: December 25 Coach s Comments: Heather out jumps and out plays opposing hi ers who many mes have a height advantage. This three-year starter brings experience and an arsenal of versa le shots, as well as consistency that is a testament to her work ethic. Heather is the complete package bringing athle c ability and knowledge of the game together (Junior): played in 151 matches for Union...was second on the team with 426 kills...added 40 aces, 468 digs and 48 blocks...was named first team all-conference and a TranSouth Scholar Athlete (Sophomore): played in 111 matches for Union...recorded 250 kils, 26 aces, and 301 digs...was named to the TranSouth All- Tournament team and was a TranSouth Scholar Athlete. Before Union: Lieberman played volleyball for one season at Genesee Community College where she was named Region Player of the Year, 1st team All-Conference, and 2nd team All-American. She was elected twice as the player of the week while playing at Genesee CC. Lieberman prepped at Wayne Central High School in Ontario Center, New York. At Wayne Central, Lieberman was a three sport athlete involved in volleyball, and indoor and outdoor track. She was named Team Captain for volleyball and indoor track. In volleyball, she earned first team All-League and All-State as both a junior and senior. Lieberman also received the Coaches Award as a senior. Lieberman was just as successful in the classroom. She was a member of the Na onal Honor Society, a scholar athlete for four seasons, student body president for four years, and earned the Young Leaders Award. San Antonio CC Birthday: July 12 Coach s Comments: Kelsey is making a move from outside hi er to libero this year. While an outstanding hi er, it is her defense and ins nc ve play that makes her invaluable to the success of the team. Moving to libero will capitalize on her defensive skills and court smarts, enabling her to anchor the back row with passion and intensity (Junior): played in 150 matches...third on Union s team with 401 kills...second with 43 aces and 501 digs...added 37 blocks...was named all-conference and a TranSouth Scholar Athlete. 6 Before Union: Duling transferred to Union from Mt. San Antonio Community College in California. While at Mt. San Antonia, she helped lead her team to a second place finish in the conference, behind the eventual California Junior College State Champion. Duling was named the California Community College Athlete of the Month as a sophomore and was also a two- me first team All-Conference player. In her two years at Mt. San Antonio, she tallied 576 kills, 91 blocks, 91 aces, and 613 digs. Duling prepped at Gabrielino High School where she played volleyball and so ball, leading her volleyball team in back-to-back league championship seasons. Lauren has amazing ins ncts and a great ability to read the hit. She will be called upon to take more leadership on the back row and serve receive (Freshman): played in 137 matches...recorded 10 kills, 28 aces and 383 digs. 11 Before Union: Sprouse was a two-sport athlete during her career at Thompson High School, playing four seasons of volleyball and three seasons of basketball. Robbins prepped at Liberty Tech High School in Jackson where she played volleyball and basketball. Emmie has great touch on the ball, as well as being strong defensively at the net blocking, as well as digging the ball. City College. While at Sacramento City, she helped lead her team to two fi h place finishes in the California Community College Ac vity Associa on (CCCAA) 8 State Tournament and led her team to an undefeated conference championship her sophomore year. Moroski was a two- me first team all-conference player and also made the All Northern-California Team. In her sophomore year at Sacramento City, she tallied 1,044 assists at assists per set, 35 aces and 243 digs. Her assists per set ranked her fourth in the CCCAA. During her freshman year she had 766 assists at 8.33 assists per set, which also ranked her thirteenth in the CCCAA. The Lady Bulldogs also had a five-game winning streak in October. Union finished conference play 9-5 and received the fourth seed in the TranSouth Conference Tournament. The Lady Bulldogs fell in the opening tournament, however, bounced back with four consecu ve victories in the loser s bracket to earn a spot in the championship. This was the second straight season for Union to advance to the championship match. Union fell short of a second straight conference tournament tle with a 3-1 loss to in the tle match to Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.). Union finished with several players receiving individual postseason honors. Marcela Madeira, Ka e Adams and Heather Lieberman were named first team all-conference performers, while Anna Sims and Kelsey Duling earned second team honors. Madeira also received NAIA and AVCA All-American honors.
