A commitment to excellence is one of our four core values across the University best demonstrated in our numerous quality academic programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels. For eleven straight years Union has been listed as a Top Tier University in the South by U. S. News and World Report. One of the fastest growing private institutions in the entire South, Union University continues to make strides in all aspects of our workand athletics is no exception. For four straight years Union has been the recipient of the TranSouth All-Sports Trophy. This recognition speaks well of all of our coaches and athletes. We salute David Blackstock, Tommy Sadler, and all of those who serve Union University so faithfully in our Department of Athletics. We thank each of you for your support of the Union University athletic teams and for support of our distinctive Christcentered mission. Go Bulldogs! David S. Dockery, President When David S. Dockery was elected as the fifteenth president of Union University in December 1995, he brought with him a compelling vision to build on a great tradition while taking Union to the next level of regional and national prominence in Christian higher education. The progress that has been made during this time has been remarkable: annual non-duplicating headcount increased from 2200 (in 1996) to more than 4000 (in 2007) with annual fall enrollment increasing from 1975 to 3300; significantly increased giving to Union, including twelve of the largest commitments in Union history; instituted three five-year strategic plans including the current Union 2010: A Vision for Excellence ; completed construction of two residence halls, the Miller Tower, Jennings Hall, Hammons Hall, Fesmire Fieldhouse and athletic fields, and the magnificent $20 million White Hall for Science and Healthcare. A $110 million comprehensive Building a Future campaign (now at $95 million) was launched; renewed commitment to scholarship and research among Union faculty as a part of the establishment of the Center for Faculty Development; added new undergraduate majors in political science, physics, theology, digital media studies, church history, ethics, sports management, sports medicine, engineering; and graduate programs in education (M.Ed., Ed.S., and Ed.D.), nursing (MSN with tracks in education, administration, and nurse anesthesia), intercultural studies (MAIS); and a graduate program in Christian Studies (MCS). SACS Level V accreditation was achieved and accreditation was reaffirmed in 2007 at the ten year review; programs were added in undergraduate research. Student Life and Campus Ministry programs were expanded including: LIFE group programs, student leadership development, student retention programs, student mission involvement, and giftedness assessment program for freshman students. An extension campus was established in Germantown, TN, which now has almost 900 students. This era has seen the establishment of the Carl F.H. Henry Center for Christian Leadership; the Charles Colson Chair for Faith and Culture; the Hammons Chair of Pre-Medical Studies and the Hammons Center for Science and Faith; the Ryan Center for Biblical Studies, the Stephen Olford Chair of Preaching; the Center for Educational Practice, the Center for Religion and Politics, the Center for Excellence in Healthcare Practice, and the Center for Media, Faith and Culture. The highly successful annual Scholarship Banquet ( ) was launched, along with Union Forums. Union has achieved top tier recognition in U.S. News and World Report for ten years in a row and other important listings. A new Mission Statement, Identity Statement, Core Values, and Statement of Faith have been adopted to guide the University during this time. Union has attracted national attention with its approach to a simulation model for healthcare, as well as major conferences regarding Baptist Identity, Christian Higher Education, and other key topics. Three significant publications have helped define the work of Christian higher education on the Union campus and around the country: The Future of Christian Higher Education, Shaping a Christina Worldview, and Renewing Minds: Serving Church and Society Through Christian Higher Education. 6 UNION UNIVERSITY Athletic Administration Dr. David Blackstock David Blackstock is beginning his 34th season as athletic director at Union University, In the spring of 2006, Dr. Blackstock returned to the coaching ranks as he took over the softball head coaching duties. After two successfull seasons as softball head coach, Blackstock places his attention back on full-time athletic director duties. Dr. David Blackstock will be leading an athletic department that is currently made up of 10 varsity sports (women: soccer, cross country, volleyball, basketball, softball; men: soccer, cross country, basketball, baseball, golf) and two junior varsity sports (men s and women s soccer). Blackstock spent 18 seasons at the helm of the women s basketball program at Union, where he compiled a overall record, earning his 500th career victory during the season. Numerous accomplishments have been a part of his basketball coaching career, including the 1998 NAIA Women s Basketball National Championship. In addition to the national title, Blackstock was named NAIA Coach of the Year and was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in Blackstock took over the baseball program in 1975 where he, along with co-head coach Dr. Linn Stranak, guided the team to a third place finish in the NAIA World Series in 1983, the only season Union has participated in the event. It was at that same time that Blackstock turned his attention to the women s basketball program. During the Lady Bulldog basketball campaign, Blackstock went to the NAIA District 24 finals 11 times, capturing five district crowns, the 1998 national championship, and 12 conference championships. He guided the team to 10 national tournament berths in his final 12 seasons, participating three times in the title game. In the two seasons he coached the Union Softball team, Blackstock accumulated a record of with one region tournament appearance. Blackstock began his association with Union University as a baseball player in 1960 where he played for the Bulldogs until After a bachlor s degree from Union in 1964, Blackstock Women s Basketball Baseball Softball earned a Master of Education degre from Memphis State University in He then Year Record Year Record Year Record moved to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where he received his doctorate from the University of Southern Mississippi. 8 During his time at Union as a student, Gream was the student assistant coach for the volleyball team. Over those two seasons, Union compiled an overall record of with a TranSouth Conference regular season and tournament championship. Union also participated in two NAIA Region XI Tournaments, as well as, two appearances in the NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) National Tournament. Gream, only the second head coach in the Union volleyball history, continued the winning tradition by leading the squad to a ninth straight winning season. In addition to this head coaching duties for volleyball, Gream will serve as assistant coach for softball and work with the athletic facilities director. Gream is coming off his best season as head coach of the Union volleyball team. His group posted a record and finished third in the TranSouth regular season and tournament. He earned his first trip as a coach to the NAIA Region XI Tournament and the team s eighth region trip in nine seasons. After graduating from Union University in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science degree in History, Gream spent five years at his former high school alma mater, North Pemiscot High School in Wardell, Missouri. At North Pemiscot, Gream was the high school and junior high volleyball coach, as well as, a high school history teacher. In August of 2004, Gream completed his Masters of Education degree from Union University. In each summer, starting in 2005, Gream has led a group of high school volleyball players to Hawaii for a series of matches. Through his coaching in this type of environment, Gream has witnessed top-notch volleyball talent and numerous styles of play. This experience serves well for Gream as he prepares his teams to compete in the very competitive TranSouth Conference and the NAIA. Gream, a native of Portageville, Missouri, has worked with local clubs and leagues in the community to develop new volleyball programs for young kids, and in doing so, has increased the participation and quality of volleyball in his area. He also is a member of the AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association). 9 UNION UNIVERSITY Coaching Staff Heather Hall Heather Hall is in her first season with Union University. In June of 2007, Hall was hired as the new head softball coach for the Union Lady Bulldogs. In addition to her softball duties, Hall will serve as the assistant volleyball coach. Hall, a native of Prince Edward Island, Canada, has spent the past two seasons as the assistant coach at the University of Tennessee at Martin under the leadership of Head Coach Donley Canary. Hall, formerly known as Heather Ford, played college softball at Gannon University in Erie Pennsylvania from In 2004, she graduated with a major in Social Work and a minor in French. While at Gannon, she set numerous school records. Hall holds careers records for strikeouts (857), shutouts (35), innings pitched, ERA (1.06), wins 68), complete games (81), and games started. She also holds Gannon single season records for strikeouts (226), while also holding the second, third, and fourth spots for strikeouts in a season. Hall adds single season records in ERA (0.51), complete games, innings pitched, and shutouts to her list of milestones. In 2001, Ford was named the GLIAC Freshman of the Year and was a three-time All- GLIAC performer (2001, 2002, and 2004). In 2002, Hall s ERA and strikeouts placed her second and third respectively in NCAA Division II ranks. Hall has competed in the Canadian Nationals at the junior and senior levels. She was named the MVP for the Canadian Senior Women s National Tournament in Hall was married to Steven Hall, Jr. on July 7, She has one step daughter, Audrey Hall (7). Assistant Coach Phone: hhall@uu.edu Kristen Kolter is in her first season as a graduate assistant coach for the Union volleyball team. Kolter is a 2007 graduate of Union University with a degree in???. She is working to complete her Master s of Arts and Education Degree. Kristen Kolter Graduate Assistant Kolter played four seasons for the Union softball team and one season as a member of the volleyball team. During Kolter s career, she was named first team All-Conference and All-Region as a junior when she hit.366 with seven doubles and six homeruns. During her playing career, the softball team posted two conference championships, a region title, and two trips to the NAIA Softball National Tournament. Kristen prepped at Adams Central HS were she played volleyball and softball. She earned the Jet Award and was named All-Conference in softball at a junior and senior. In 2003 as a high school senior, she was named a Who s Who Athlete s Addition. Kristen hit.399 for her high school career and hit.486 as a senior. She also tallied 107 hits, 81 RBI, 26 doubles, five triples, and three homeruns for her career. She led her high school volleyball team to four straight conference and sectional championships ( ). Adam Raines Volleyball Trainer Phone: Adam Raines is now in his second season as the trainer for the volleyball team. Raines graduated from Union University in 2006 with a degree in Athletic Training. He has since then has become a Board Certified Licensed Athletic Trainer. Previous School: Shasta CC Birthday: June 5 Coach s Comments: CJ brings an exciting game to Union with her balanced skills of being a great attacker, a great passer, and a great server. All of these skills earned her numerous honors in California and will prove valuable during her time at Union. Union Career: First Season at Union. Before Union: Neathamer came to Union after spending two seasons at Shasta College where she played volleyball and softball. While at Shasta, Neathamer helped lead her team to the Golden Valley Conference Title and a 7th place finish in the state playoffs in As a sophomore, she was named Team Captain, Team MVP, first team All-Conference, All-Conference MVP, All- Region, All-North State, and All-State. Before Union: Martins transferred to Union from Genesee Community College were she played volleyball and softball. In volleyball, she was named second team All-American and Region 3 Player of the Year as a sophomore. Martins ranked nationally in three categories as a freshman, including first in hitting efficiency, 27th in aces per game, 37th in assists per game. Martins played five sports in high school at Iona Catholic Secondary School. She was a member of the volleyball, softball, hockey, basketball, and flag football teams. As a junior, she was named MVP in volleyball, softball, hockey, and flag football. Before Union: Sells prepped at Little Rock Christian Academy where she played four years of volleyball. In 2005 and 2006, she helped lead her team to the 3A Central Conference regular season and tournament championships. As a senior, Sells was named to the state All-Star team, as well as, the Battle at the Fort All-Tournament team. She was also a Wendy s High School Heisman Nominee and named the Outstanding Female Scholar Athlete. In both her junior and senior years, Sells added All-Conference and Defensive MVP to her list of honors. 15 UNION UNIVERSITY Lady Bulldogs The 2007 season for the Union University Lady Bulldog volleyball team begins with lofty expectations. However, the challenge is great as the team returns only two players from last years squad. Third year head coach Steven Gream looks to mold this collection of players, possibly the most talented group in his three years of coaching, into a team that will challenge for the TranSouth title and more. Union has just one senior on the team with the return of Lindsey Wallach. Wallach proved to be a solid back row player, not just for Union, but in the league. The junior class for Union is rather large. The lone returning junior for Coach Gream is Amanda Hutchison Coyle. Hutchison Coyle is a past All-Conference and All-Region player. She passed the 1,000 career kill mark during her sophomore year. Seven juniors are newcomers to the team. Cassi Hobbs was a red-shirt last season, and will step in this year as one of the best defenders on the team. CJ Neathamer, Emilie Ogas, Tiven Catrett, and Brisa Berlin each come to Union to provide a explosive front row on offense and a solid block on defense. Jennifer Martins will start as the setter for the Lady Bulldogs. With the talented passers on the back row and the powerful arms on the front row, Martins could produce outstanding numbers this season. Two freshman players complete the roster for the Lady Bulldogs. Olivia Sells adds depth to a very talented back row, while Jill Dake comes in as a young outside hitter that will have an opportunity to learn and contribute this season. Union s collection of players for the 2007 season boasts a returning All- Conference and All-Region performer, plus newcomers that include three junior college conference players of the year and one junior college All- American. The Union Lady Bulldogs have been picked the finish third in the TranSouth Preseason Coaches Poll, the same spot as last season s finish. However, the Union squad hopes to come together and make a run at the conference title and deep run in the NAIA postseason Season Outlook The 2006 season started with a bang for the Union Lady Bulldogs as they opened with 11 straight wins. The team finished the season with a record overall and a 10-6 mark in the TranSouth. Union finished in a two-way tie for third place in the league, followed by a third place finish in the TranSouth Conference Tournament. Union earned an at-large bid to the NAIA Region XI Tournament for the eighth time in the nine-year history of the program. During the season, Union did crack the NAIA National rankings on October 11 as they received votes for that week. The team also was well represented in several weekly awards. Amanda Hutchison and Monica Schrimer were each name TranSouth and NAIA Region XI Players of the Week. Lindsey Wallach was named TranSouth Libero of the Week once, while Purity Ogolla was named TranSouth Setter of the Week three times. Union placed seven players among the TranSouth Postseason award winners. Hutchison and Schrimer were each named first team All-Conference. Ogolla, Edith Mendoza, and Elena Villagomez were each named honorable mentioned. Wallach joined Lindsey Holmes and Kelly Huffines on the TranSouth Scholar Athlete team. Hutchison and Schrimer were also named NAIA All-Region performers. NAIA - National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate sports. Since its introduction of intercollegiate championship basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained the highest standards while administering first-rate athletics programs.
