11 2009 Season Outlook The Union University 2009 version of the men s soccer team moves into the fourth season with head coach Clovis Simas at the helm. The Bulldogs of Union are coming off a season with a 5-2 (3rd place) TranSouth finish, just one game off the leaders that finished tied at 6-1. Union has several key players returning in hopes of improving on that conference finish and battle for a league title. Sixteen of the 36 total players are returning, however, only eight of those returners are upperclassmen. This will be an exciting season for our program, says Simas. We have many challenges ahead of us. However, I believe we have a great group of young men that are motivated to excel on and off the field. I m looking forward to a great season. Five seniors are returning to help lead the squad with their skills and experience. Jordan Thompson, Paul Turner, Anthony O Neill, Marcos Matos and Kevin Bradley all are back after successful seasons last year. Turner was one of three Union players to make the all-conference squad. The juniors take up five spots on the roster. Mike Phelan returns after starting games in Dennis Regalado, Ian Allen and Jared Carpenter return after playing junior varsity last season. Robert Lynn joins the squad this season as a newcomer to the men s soccer program. Ten sophomores return with seven of them playing significant time for the varsity team during their freshman season. J. Landham leads the way as he earned all-conference honors as a freshman goalie for Union. Nick DeSio, Dejan Kostic, Rafael Carvalho, Chris Waugh, Nate Peterson and Cooper Rawls all return after playing in Rawls will red-shirt in 2009, while Jose Marroquin, Jeremy Osborn and Peter Yu return after playing junior varsity in The biggest class for Union in 2009 is the freshman, taking up 16 spots on the roster. Evan Jones, Jacob Long, Guilherme Elvira, Kemal Gogic, Guilherme Reis, Martin Godwin, Alysson Mohl, Joseph Moser, Joe Shultz, Thomas Young, Taylor Mayo, John Stout, Evan Hare, Phillip Johnson, Diego Santos and Jake Carter make up the newcomers. The young players will look to contribute early in their careers. Top newcomers G. Elvira, Mohl and Mayo will work to lead the young players as they are expected to produce results this season. The 2008 season saw Union finish just one game away from a conference title, and just one game behind the eventual NAIA National Champion which came from the TranSouth. Those results, despite being disappointing when looking back, give this team motivation and confidence as they enter the 2009 season. 11
