10 PRESIDENT S REPORT Volleyball Queensland (VQ) had a transformative year in Our membership grew a further 10% to 6043, after factoring in the planned re-classification of all Primary Schools Cup entrants from members to participants. We expanded to three Queensland Schools Cup events to cater for a record 457 teams; introduced a national single membership period to rollover on 31 March 2017, and transitioned to the National Insurance Scheme for all personal accident claims. The Queensland Government continues to support VQ through its Industry Development Program (QSRIDP). Our organisation could not operate without the generous support of the Queensland Government, which continues to set the national benchmark in supporting the sports industry and in particular, the community sport sector. Cairns Volleyball Association did an amazing job hosting an official FIVB Rio 2016 Olympic Qualification Tournament AVC Continental Cup. This event deservedly won Volleyball Australia s 2016 VA Event of the Year. VQ s Senior Schools Cup was selected as the official opening event for the new eight-court Coomera Indoor Sports Centre near Dreamworld, which has been built to host the gymnastics tournament and the netball finals for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Volleyball Queensland has worked closely with the City of Gold Coast and the Queensland Government to ensure that volleyball infrastructure was incorporated into this new facility. We have negotiated a four year agreement to relocate up to four of our major events each year to the Gold Coast between in order to secure ongoing priority access of these facilities. Later in the year at this same venue, VQ hosted a record 67 teams at the Australian Junior Volleyball Championships (AJVC) at the same venue. Next year we will see the 15-court Gold Coast Sports & Leisure Centre construction completed and we will be hosting Queensland s official FIVB indoor tournament on June 2017 when we stage the FIVB Men s World League Group 2 finals. Kingaroy s Taliqua Clancy became Queensland s 27 th Olympian in Volleyball and Beach Volleyball for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in Beach Volleyball. Our state league competition, Premier Volleyball League (PVL), reached capacity at The Gap State High School and Brisbane State High School with a record 72 teams from 13 clubs. The Queensland Beach Volleyball Tour (QBVT) continued to strengthen and grow under Damien Searle s leadership with 15 tournaments delivered by 6 promoters. The Board endorsed a financial strategy designed to achieve $50,000 average annual surplus for the next five years in order to deliver $250,000 net equity by 31 December This is in line with the Australian Sports Commission s stated best practice of 20-25% of annual turnover. Accordingly, the financial result of a $75,465 surplus in our first year was a tremendous result and a credit to all the staff led by our General Manager, Jon Gibbs.

11 As part of this strategy, VQ reluctantly closed down our commercial beach volleyball facility at West End. This facility has struggled financially since being closed for five months for repairs after the Brisbane Floods in January This major decision plus a detailed review of VQ projects and activities has resulted in further savings by ceasing unviable activities as well as providing a platform for a tactical refocus of VQ projects. On the court, Queensland performed exceptionally well in all four national championships in 2016: 1st overall - Australian Junior Beach Volleyball Championships, Glenelg SA (April 2016) National Champions U/19 Men: Marcus Ferguson and Bryce Poland National Champions U/17 Women: Tiaan Smith and Indiana Hawkins National Champions U/17 Men: Mark Nicolaidis and Brad Sting National Champions U/15 Girls: Kayla Mears, Brianna Mears, Annelies Jones and Amelia Takken National Champions U/15 Boys: Connor O Neill, Will O Meara, Ben Booth and Cooper Grinlaubs 1st overall - Australian Junior Volleyball Championships, Gold Coast QLD (September 2016) National Champions U/17 Men: Championship National Champions U/17 Women: Championship National Champions - U/15 Boys Championship National Champions U/15 Girls: Division 1 2nd - Women's Australian Volleyball League (Women s AVL) 1st - Men's Australian Volleyball League (Men s AVL). On behalf of the Board, I would like to sincerely thank the Volleyball Queensland staff for their professionalism, dedication, and commitment Jon Gibbs, Damien Searle, Matt Grinlaubs, Kent Scotney, Patti McIntosh, Susan McQuinn, Jill Kelly, and Victoria Cameron. I would also like to thank my fellow Board Members for their active contributions during In particular, I would like to acknowledge the contribution of Brenden Turner who was not re-elected to the Board at our AGM in May Brenden has been a tireless champion of beach volleyball and improving the sport s culture. I also welcome Greg Potter to the Board after his successful election to the Board at the AGM. Greg has a strong background in financial management as well as his background as both a player and coach. I thank our AVL sponsors that supported our men s and women s programs in In particular, the generous support of our AVL naming rights sponsor Suzuki Queensland, as well as our clothing sponsor GAME Clothing. The continued support from Mikasa, The Gap SHS, and Pivotal Motion Physiotherapy is an important contribution to the success of the AVL programs. I would also like to acknowledge the continued support we receive from the Queensland Government, Volleyball Australia, Queensland Academy of Sport, City of Gold Coast and the Logan City Council. I look forward to seeing you on the court. Boris Georgieff President Volleyball Queensland 2016 Annual Report 5

12 FINANCE DIRECTOR S REPORT Volleyball Queensland delivered a record $75,465 surplus in This pleasing result outperformed our challenging target of $50,000 average annual surplus for the five years The Board endorsed a financial strategy to achieve $250,000 net equity by 31 December 2020 to bolster VQ s net equity and ensure our operations are sustainable. This 2016 outcome was achieved through a combination of record tournament entries in nearly all VQ events, cost savings, new sponsorship through relocating events to the Gold Coast, and closure of our underperforming commercial beach volleyball facility at West End. We also re-aligned our membership periods to a single annual national expiry date of 31 March 2017 and used this one-off accrual accounting windfall to offset the writing off the residual value of West End. We also benefited financially from the first year of a three-year agreement to host the Australian Junior Volleyball Championships (AJVC) from , which saw a record 67 teams entered from Australia, plus New Zealand, and Samoa, along with a record 53 referees. Strong revenue growth was recorded in membership and Schools Cup activities, as well as record entries in the growing Premier Volleyball League. Total revenue increased in 2016 by $229,048 (18%) to $1,497,634. This was impacted significantly by the turnover from hosting AJVC ($170k) will continue in 2017 and 2018 under the current three-year agreement. The Board and administration have planned intended price rises for activities to remain in line with consumer price index. This is in response to feedback from affiliates last year seeking certainty for their own members. The General Manager implemented the outcomes of a Strategic Review into VQ s staffing, programs and pricing at the end of 2015 to increase core profitability this year. During the year we also negotiated longterm sustainable outcomes for capitation fees payable to Volleyball Australia and national insurance schemes for member s personal accident coverage. I commend Jon Gibbs on his delivery of this strategy and the AJVC hosting arrangement. VQ s return to strong profitability is the result of the Board s deliberate strategy to focus on popular events and containing costs. Accumulating our goal of $250,000 in cash reserves means VQ will be able to weather financial surprises and invest in expanding volleyball in Queensland. Russell D Egan Volleyball Queensland 2016 Annual Report 6

13 GENERAL MANAGER S REPORT This is my ninth year as General Manager and I am very pleased to report that 2016 continued our trend of sustainable growth in our membership and competitions. We welcomed Patti McIntosh to our staff and Damien Searle commenced a temporary part-time secondment to help deliver beach volleyball at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. The entire staff have worked very hard on delivering the strategic changes endorsed by the Board for 2016 and I thank all of them for the commitment and support. I am privileged to have many Board members playing active roles across a wide variety of VQ activities and championing various Board Sub-Committees to continue improving our products and services. The highlight for beach volleyball this year was seeing Cairns Volleyball Association host the AVC Continental Cup, which saw Australia qualify a second women s pair to compete at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. This event also won Volleyball Australia s 2016 VA Event of the Year. We were all filled with pride to see Kingaroy s Taliqua Clancy become Queensland s 27 th volleyball and beach volleyball since Olympian in Premier Volleyball League (PVL) continued its growth with 72 teams across the participating 13 clubs. We introduced a third Schools Cup to meet growing demand across six years of high school for indoor volleyball. The Queensland Schools Cup series will not reach maturity until 2020 when all Queensland high schools transition to six full years of cohorts. We welcomed the first of two new volleyball facilities on the Gold Coast that are being built for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Coomera Indoor Sports Centre opened its eight-court facility to Senior Schools Cup with a record 224 teams in August The facility then hosted the largest-ever Australian Junior Volleyball Championships (AJVC) in September. Next year will see an even larger 15-court facility open at Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre at Carrara. These two facilities will transform volleyball competitions in Queensland over the next two to three years. Volleyball Queensland simply could not deliver its services without the wonderful support of its corporate sponsors Queensland Government, Mikasa, and the City of Gold Coast. Finally, I would like to thank the VQ President, Boris Georgieff, for his leadership and support. Jon Gibbs General Manager Volleyball Queensland 2016 Annual Report 7
