8 PRESIDENT S REPORT Volleyball Queensland (VQ) had a great year on and off the court in Our membership grew another 12.5% to Our five Queensland Schools Cup events all saw record entries: teams for our three indoor Queensland Schools Cup tournaments (457 teams in 2016) teams at Beach Schools Cup, which now makes it the largest beach volleyball tournament in Qld teams competed at Primary Schools Cup for school years 4-6 The Queensland Government continues to support VQ through its Industry Development Program (QSRIDP). Our organisation could not operate without the generous support of the Queensland Government, which continues to set the national benchmark in supporting the sports industry and in particular, the community sport sector. Queensland hosted its first official FIVB indoor tournament on June 2017 when the FIVB Men s World League Group 2 finals arrived at the new 15-court Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre at Carrara. In a very tough competition, Australia finished strongly and won the bronze medal. This was a great result for Australia and also a great opportunity for VQ members and the volleyball community to witness high-class international indoor volleyball here in Queensland. The Queensland State Championships (Indoor) boasted a record 63 teams and for the first time VQ was able to webcast the finals of the Championship division. The Queensland Championships (Beach), with the full complement of 48 teams across all divisions, was featured at the start of the QLD Beach Schools Cup at Redcliffe. It was a great atmosphere in challenging conditions, as today s beach stars provided inspiration to future beach volleyballers representing their schools. VQ was also able to webcast the finals of the Queensland Championships live from Suttons Beach at Redcliffe. The Queensland Beach Volleyball Tour (QBVT) continues to be a success with 13 tournaments delivered around Queensland by six promoters. The Premier Volleyball League (PVL) also continues to grow with a record 77 teams from 12 clubs playing in both senior and junior divisions. The Board endorsed a financial strategy in early 2016 designed to achieve $50,000 average annual surplus for the next five years in order to deliver $250,000 net equity by 31 December This is in line with the Australian Sports Commission s stated best practice of 20-25% of annual turnover. Accordingly, the financial result of a $67,470 surplus in our second year was a pleasing result and a credit to all the staff led by our General Manager, Jon Gibbs. On the court, Queensland performed exceptionally well in all four national championships in 2017: - 1st overall - Australian Junior Beach Volleyball Championships, Scarborough WA (April 2017) - 1st overall - Australian Junior Volleyball Championships, Gold Coast QLD (September 2017) including an amazing ten gold medals and one silver medal in the 11 divisions (continued ) Volleyball Queensland 2017 Annual Report 3

9 - 3rd - Women's Australian Volleyball League (Women s AVL) - 1st - Men's Australian Volleyball League (Men s AVL) On behalf of the Board, I sincerely thank the Volleyball Queensland staff for their professionalism, dedication, and commitment Jon Gibbs, Damien Searle, Todd Kropp, Kylie Marshall, Patti McIntosh, Susan McQuinn, Jill Kelly, Victoria Cameron, David Kelly, and Kent Scotney. We also welcomed Craig Marshall back to Queensland this year as our new QAS Volleyball Head Coach and he was joined by new full-time Assistant Coach, Chris Todd. I would like to thank my fellow Board Members for their active contributions during In particular, I would like to acknowledge the outstanding contribution of one of our regional Board members, Kevin Howard, who retired due to personal health issues. I m sure Kevin will continue to have a tremendous impact on the sport of volleyball in his home town of Gladstone. I also want to acknowledge the very significant contribution made by Terry Rudder as Vice-President. Terry has provided wise counsel and strong leadership to the Board for many years. He has chosen to step down from the office of Vice-President in order to focus more on his family at this time. Terry continues on the VQ Board and continues to challenge the status quo and drive for growth and improved opportunities for the volleyball community. Adam Pollock has been elected by the VQ Board to the position of Vice-President. Adam brings a different approach with a strong desire to grow and market the sport. I thank the members of the Queensland Beach Volleyball Committee, the Volleyball Queensland Schools Sub-Committee, the Queensland Volleyball Referees Committee and the club presidents that form The Presidents Commission for their dedication and many hours of work in the Volleyball community. The Board relies heavily on the expert advice and experience of these committee members. I thank our loyal AVL sponsors who supported our men s and women s programs again this year. In particular, the generous support of our AVL naming rights sponsor Suzuki Queensland, as well as our clothing sponsor GAME Clothing. The continued support from The Gap SHS, Pivotal Motion Physiotherapy, and Mikasa is a critical part of the success of the AVL programs. I would also like to acknowledge the continued support we receive from the Queensland Government, Volleyball Australia, Queensland Academy of Sport, City of Gold Coast, and the Logan City Council. I look forward to seeing you on the court. Boris Georgieff President Volleyball Queensland 2017 Annual Report 4

10 FINANCE DIRECTOR S REPORT Volleyball Queensland consolidated last year s record result and exceeded its budget target with a $67,470 surplus in This result outperformed our stretch target of $50,000 average annual surplus for five years ( ). This performance follows the prior year surplus of $75,465. The Board s financial strategy, announced in 2016, is to achieve $250,000 net equity by 31 December 2020 in an effort to bolster VQ s net equity position and ensure our operations are sustainable. Turnover grew by $88,886 (or 5.8%) to $1,616,296, despite price increases being contained at or below CPI consistent with the Board s price philosophy also resolved in Our net equity reached $158,808 as at 31 December 2017, putting us a full year ahead of our five year net equity goal. We have worked to provide greater detail in the financial report this year breaking down expenses into additional categories. This year s result was achieved through a combination of record tournament entries in nearly all VQ events, cost savings and control, plus the financial impact of our second year under a 3-year agreement to host the Australian Junior Volleyball Championships (AJVC) ( ) at Coomera Indoor Sports Centre, which saw a record 69 teams entered from around Australia, New Zealand and Samoa. We were part of a national agreement that replaced capitation fees with flat fee payment to Volleyball Australia for all annual player registrations for four years to This gives us greater certainty and has improved margins as long as membership remains stable or continues growing. This outstanding financial performance is a tribute to Jon Gibbs, General Manager, and our staff s dedication to our membership, and could only be achieved with the support of our community s officials, coaches, and volunteers who have supported our ambitious vision. The Board is planning a strong reinvestment strategy next year in staff, systems, and resources to expand the capabilities of the office and further support the growth of volleyball in Queensland and improve the promotion and presentation of our events. 11 GENERAL MANAGER S REPORT This is my tenth year as General Manager and I am very pleased to report that 2017 brought sustained growth in our membership and competitions. Premier Volleyball League (PVL) continued its growth with 77 teams from 12 participating clubs. All of our existing competitions achieved capacity or record entries. We introduced a new competition format this year Grand Prix Volleyball (GPV) - to cater for a new type of volleyball consumer that wants to play 3-4 games over a weekend away from home. The inaugural GPV competition hosted six men s and women s teams in rounds held at Toowoomba, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. We welcomed the second of two new impressive volleyball facilities on the Gold Coast that have been built for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre at Carrara (GCS&LC) opened in April 2017 and boasts 15 world-class volleyball courts. We were privileged to run our first ever FIVB World League tournament in Queensland as the second major event at this new facility. We subsequently conducted a variety of competitions at the venue this year - Junior PVL, State Championships (junior divisions), Senior Schools Cup, and Junior Schools Cup. We are also working closely with Netball Queensland to secure indoor volleyball infrastructure and access to their new 8-court State Netball Centre at QSAC Nathan, which is scheduled to open in early Todd Kropp joined the team to cover Damien Searle s secondment to GOLDOC as the Technical Operations Manager for Beach Volleyball at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. Kylie Marshall also joined the team in our new part-time role as State Teams Coordinator. Volleyball Queensland simply could not deliver its services without the support of its corporate sponsors Queensland Government, Mikasa, and the City of Gold Coast. We also have wonderful corporate partners in Suzuki Queensland, GAME Clothing, The Gap SHS, and Pivotal Motion Therapy. I am very grateful for the contribution from our team of staff and the VQ Board of Management. I am also constantly in awe at the support of our loyal volleyball coaches in all our state team programs and development camps. Finally, I would like to thank the VQ President, Boris Georgieff, for his leadership and guidance. Jon Gibbs General Manager Volleyball Queensland 2017 Annual Report 6

Initially Tier 4 and later renamed QAS Emerging, this squad targeted younger athletes and enabled the QAS Volleyball Program to expand considerably. Former QAS athletes were well represented in senior national teams including 25% of the Men s and Women s Indoor Volleyroos squads for 2017, as well as a number of strong performances on the FIVB world tour including 3 Gold, 1 silver and 2 Bronze medals. The format for the season was similar to previous years with a split conference with the Eastern conference comprising of 5 teams while the Southern had 4. The program took on a new focus in 2017 with the introduction of a development component where some of Queensland's younger athletes were provided the opportunity to train under the Pirates head coaches to assist with the future success of the Queensland Pirates at the national level. The Pirates men, in collaboration with the Canberra Heat, integrated opportunities for competition for this next batch of athletes with Reserve team matches played both at home and away with Canberra. These extra matches provided valuable development opportunities for not only the athletes, but also the coaches and officials. The Pirates men and women dominated their respective competitions in the Conference phase, with both teams only dropping 1 match out of the 16 played in the rounds sending them to the finals with a great deal of confidence. The women battled hard against a strong WA team and were beaten in the semi-final but bounced back to win the Bronze medal game in a hard fought match against their conference rival Sydney Amazons. The men had a different story in the finals campaign. They took on SA in the semi and although they dropped the 3rd set were convincing winners. They then followed it up with a strong and dominant Gold medal match beating the WA Hornets in 3 sets. Final placings can be found in Appendix K.
