4 Washington washington and lee 2006 SEASON PREVIEW The Washington and Lee volleyball roster may have changed considerably since the 2005 season ended, but the 2006 squad will continue to have the same expectations. Though they are re-tooling this fall, the Generals hope to win the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and gain the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the sixth straight season. "People's expectations from the exterior may be that we are rebuilding," noted seventh-year Head Coach Bryan Snyder. "From the interior, our expectations are entirely the same." Exterior expectations have been clouded a bit by the loss of three-time All-America setter Christine Gladysz and two-time All-America middle blocker Susan Gaillard, along with a host of players who helped the Generals to a overall record and a 42-0 mark in the ODAC over the past four seasons. "Those players helped set a lot of records, but we're still looking forward," said Snyder. "We're going to do some things differently this year. We're going to be whatever best suits our personnel. In the past, it was no secret that setter (Gladysz) was the strength of our team, this year that strength will be camouflaged a bit." This year's team will be led not by its offense, but by the defense. Senior libero Lauren Edmonson (5-foot-6) will be the team's core and inspirational leader. Last fall, Edmonson earned First Team All-ODAC honors after setting a new school record for digs in a match (33) and in a season (511). She also had a team-best 80 service aces. "Barring some unforeseen occurrence, Lauren will be the starting libero again this season," noted Snyder. "She did a great job last year and we'll be looking for more of the same. We're also going to experiment a bit with moving her around to get her more touches. She is the key, our leader, and everyone else will fill in around her." Snyder expects freshmen Aleisha Butler (5-foot-5) and Rachel Skains (5-foot-7) to backup Edmonson, while the remainder of his team will not be so cut and dry. Talent abounds, but every other position is up for grabs. At setter, the heir apparent to Gladysz and her 5,000+ career assists will be sought from a competition involving junior Lauren Rudolph (5-foot-7) and freshmen Megan Steinhardt (5-foot-6) and Kristi Stevens (5-foot-5). Rudolph has played in 120 games the past two seasons as a reserve setter and libero. She claims 290 career assists and 189 career digs. "This is going to be one of the big preseason battles," said Snyder. "We could use a combination of setters or go with just one if someone establishes themselves. Rudolph makes good decisions and doesn't always take the obvious route or easy way out. Steinhardt has the best hands, while Stevens is a bit undersized but gets the job done and is a great communicator and leader." On the right side, junior Jessica Hudock (5-foot-10) and sophomore Jessica Ulrich (5-foot-11) will both see significant playing time. Hudock played in 94 games last season, recording 232 kills, 137 digs, 54 service aces and 47 digs. Ulrich tallied 47 kills, 46 digs, 15 blocks and 18 service aces while playing in just 24 games because of a leg injury. "Hudock gained plenty of experience at left side last season and now can move back to her natural position," said Snyder. "Ulrich gives us a lefty on the right side which is a nice bonus." 2

5 GENERALS GENERALs volleyball volleyball Snyder has a plethora of choices at outside hitter and won't hesitate to play any of them. Sophomore Laura Maurer (5-foot-10) might have the inside track after garnering Second Team All-ODAC, Second Team All-State and ODAC Rookie of the Year honors last season. She led the team with 374 kills and also led the ODAC with 4.02 kills per game. Additionally, she tallied 134 digs, 33 blocks and 19 services aces. "Laura can do everything well," noted Snyder. "She is our most skilled player and the sky is the limit if she wants it." Battling with Maurer for playing time will be senior Ashley Hurt (5-foot-11), sophomore Alex Scaggs (5-foot-9) and freshmen Paige Ivey (5-foot-9) and Katie Dunphy (5-foot-10). Hurt played in just nine games last season due to an injury, but had an outstanding sophomore season in which she finished third on the team with 334 kills. Her 497 career kills are also tops among the returnees. "I am probably most comfortable with Ashley because she's proven that she can produce against big-time opponents," stated Snyder. "She had a good spring and I expect her to be back in rhythm for the fall." Scaggs is a tremendous athlete who played in 38 games last fall, totaling 106 kills and hitting.316 from the floor. "Alex can do things that no one else on our team can do because of her athleticism and leaping ability," said Sndyer. "She just needs to become more consistent." According to Snyder, Ivey and Dunphy are both tremendous players that will compete for playing time immediately. "Ivey is a similar athlete to Scaggs and Dunphy is a big outside hitter with a strong arm," Snyder said. "Both are going to be right in the mix." In the middle, the Generals must replace not only Gaillard, but also Taylor Gibson and Honorable Mention All-ODAC selection Laurel Stewart, who decided to transfer. Together, the trio accounted for 592 kills and 233 blocks last season. Sophomores Kassie Bagley (6-foot-2) and Abbey Wilson (5-foot-11) and freshmen Rachael Phillips (6-foot-0) and Kelly Harrison (5-foot-10) will all compete for playing time at middle blocker. Bagley played in 25 games last fall and recorded 54 kills and 37 blocks, while Wilson played in 26 games with 47 kills and 27 blocks. "Kassie is our best blocker with her long arms and penetration to the net, but she needs to improve her offensive consistency," said Snyder. "Abbey is a great offensive middle and a solid blocker, but she needs to become more aggressive." Snyder also considers Phillips to be among the most versatile players on the team, while also noting that Harrison is a "skilled athlete", but a bit small for the middle. As for the team as a whole, Snyder likes the makeup as his program pushes forward. "There's not much of a gap from top to bottom at each position," he said. "We need to work hard at every practice and anyone can be a main piece towards helping us accomplish our goals." 3

6 Washington washington and lee BRYAN SNYDER, HEAD COACH Bryan Snyder is in his seventh season as the head coach of the Washington and Lee volleyball program. A 1995 W&L graduate, Snyder has tasted nothing but success in his time with the Generals, leading them to a (.816) overall record and a 60-2 (.968) Old Dominion Athletic Conference mark during his first six seasons. Additionally, he has guided the Generals to five straight ODAC Championships and five consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament, while helping W&L set a new school record for victories three times. This culminated with the 2003 squad posting a 35-4 overall record. That followed a 32-8 campaign in 2002 and a 30-5 season in The ODAC Coach of the Year each of the past five seasons and Virginia College Division Coach of the Year four of the last five years, Snyder's initial season in 2000 saw the Generals go overall, falling in the ODAC Championship game. The next four seasons, in addition to record win totals, saw the Generals appear in the AVCA Division III poll for the first time in school history. Three players, Christine Gladysz, Susan Gaillard and Emily Wolfing, have been named to the AVCA Division III All-America teams, a first for Washington and Lee volleyball. In addition to his volleyball experience, Snyder spent two seasons as an assistant coach with the W&L women's basketball team and was the interim head coach during the season. Snyder came back to W&L from St. Mary's (Md.) where he served as head volleyball coach and sports information director for two seasons. While at St. Mary's, Snyder directed the Seahawks to a overall record and two third-place finishes in the CAC. Twice his team earned American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Awards, while his 1998 squad finished with a overall record, had a school-record eight-match winning streak, and a No. 7 ranking in the mid-atlantic region. 19 Washington washington and lee ABOUT W&L WASHINGTON and LEE UNIVER- SITY a small, private, liberal arts college, is the ninth oldest institution of higher education in America. Founded in 1749, W&L prides itself on the characteristics that have earned its reputation as a place unique and apart in the national educational scene. The school s name comes from two of America s great leaders who saved W&L in times of need. George Washington saved then Liberty Hall Academy from financial ruin in 1796 when he gave the school its first major endowment gift $50,000 worth of James River Canal stock. The donation at the time the largest to any educational institution continues today as part of the endowment. Robert E. Lee saved then Washington College from obscurity after the Civil War by serving as its innovative president from 1865 until his death in 1870, and instituting such programs as the School of Law, the nation s first school of journalism, and the revered Honor System that continues to play a major role in W&L life. More than 95 percent of W&L s full-time faculty members hold doctorate or other terminal degrees, and all of them are, first and foremost, teachers. And with an average class size of just 16, W&L students clearly benefit from that expertise. W&L was ranked 14th in the 2006 U.S. News listing of the nation's top liberal arts colleges, marking the 18th consecutive year that W&L has been ranked as one of the top 25 liberal arts colleges in the nation. W&L also features a highly-ranked School of Law which has been an integral part of the school since Approximately 125 students receive Juris Doctor degrees each year and five Master of Law degrees. With a student body that represents nearly all 50 states and attracts citizens from 50 other countries, W&L is truly an international institution set in an idyllic college town. USA Today described it this way: If you close your eyes and conjure up the ideal campus red brick buildings with rows of white columns, a placid commons beneath the arching branches of ivy-covered trees, a small town of 19th-century storefronts you ve got Washington and Lee. Washington and Lee University does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national or ethnic origin, sex, sexual orientation, age, disability or veteran's status in its educational programs and activities or with regard to employment. Undergraduate student inquiries should be directed to the Dean of Students, Elrod University Commons, (540) , law student inquiries to the Associate Dean for Student Services, (540) , and employment inquiries to the Director of Human Resources, Howard House, (540) , Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Virginia
