1 TAMAR TROTTERS JUNIORS ROAD RUNNING RISK ASSESSMENT 1. Introduction This document sets out the procedures and precautions for road running activities undertaken by junior members of the Tamar Trotters. 2. General precautions for group runs Each group is to have, as a minimum, a Group Leader at the front of the group and a rear runner at the back of the group. There are to be a minimum of 2 adults per group. The maximum ratio of adults to children is 6 children per adult. The Group Leader is to continually assess the route, during the entire session, looking for emergent hazards No child is to run in front of the Group Leader at any time Children must remain on pavements at all times and only cross roads as a group under the supervision of the Group Leader The Group Leader is to carry a mobile telephone at all times and be aware of the telephone number for the school caretaker and coaches at the school. Important numbers are pre-loaded into the mobile telephone 3. Procedure for crossing roads Entire group is to stop at the crossing point and wait for all runners to assemble The Group Leader is to wait until the road is clear of traffic in both directions. Before crossing the road both adult leaders are to stand in the road to stop traffic. When instructed by the Group Leader, the entire group is to cross quickly and reassemble on the other side of the road. 4. Procedure for dealing with injury or illness that occurs during the session If a runner incurs an injury or becomes ill during the session and they are unable to continue with the session then the following procedure is to be adopted: o If the injured runner is mobile then the entire group are to return to the starting venue at whatever pace the injured runner can manage, this will probably be walking pace o If the injured runner is immobile but the injury is not considered serious then the Group Leader is to telephone one of the coaches at the school and wait until help arrives. o If the injured runner is considered to have suffered a serious injury or is unconscious then the Group Leader shall ring for an ambulance TT04-08 issue 03 Page 1 of 5 28 th January 2018

Hazards / risks Hazard I.D Description of hazard Weather conditions making the route wet or slippery Contact with members of the public, i.e. walkers, cyclists etc. 5.3 Inappropriate clothing, especially footwear Runner having existing injury or illness prior to commencing the session Runner incurs an injury or becomes ill during the session Uneven ground. Risk of runners tripping or falling Precautions to be taken to reduce risk to a minimum Check weather reports leading up to and on the day of the run. Consider cancelling the outdoor run if there is a risk of ice, snow or lightening If run takes place then Group Leader is to brief runners to take extra care Avoid any areas that are known to be wet or slippery When approaching a member of the public the Group Leader is to stop the runners and walk past the person. Recommence running when past. Brief runners to respect other road users Coaches to check clothing and footwear prior to session commencing Coaches to advise runners about appropriate clothing and footwear at regular intervals Coaches to ask group whether anyone has any injury or illness prior to commencing the run If a runner declares that they have an illness or an injury that may be worsened by their participation in the activity then they are to be prevented from taking part. A coach is to contact the parents to arrange collection of the child. Refer to section 4 Coaches to check entire route prior to the first session commencing and at regular intervals thereafter The intended route is to be chosen to avoid any known tripping hazards 5.7 Crossing roads or junctions Refer to section Running during dark evenings Each runner is to wear light coloured or reflective clothing and a light. 3 6. Suggested routes from Saltash.net school 6.1. ROUTE miles 2. Exit school car park and turn left 3. Run down the lane to the end where it joins Lynher Drive 4. Turn left and run along Lynher Drive, on the Left Hand side, 5. Follow this road to the left into Broad Walk 6. Turn Left into Uplands and run the loop around into Meadway and back to Broad Walk 7. Turn Left at the end of Meadway and Left again into Wearde Road 8. Follow Wearde Road back to the school 9. 4 6.2. ROUTE miles 2. Exit school car park and turn right 3. Turn right at end of school access road into Wearde Road 4. Run down Wearde Road on Right Hand side until opposite junction with Tower View 5. Cross Wearde Road and run down Tower View on Left Hand side 6. Keep left all the way through Rashleigh Avenue to the pathway through to St Stephens Road 7. Run up St Stephens Road, on the Right Hand side, to the junction with Wearde Road 8. Turn right into Wearde Road and then cross to Left Hand side of Wearde Road 9. Run up Wearde Road, on the left, back to the school 10. 5 6.3. ROUTE miles 2. Exit school car park and turn left 3. Run down the lane to the end where it joins Lynher Drive 4. Turn left and run along Lynher Drive, on the Left Hand side, 5. Follow this road to the left into Broad Walk 6. Stop at the junction with Broad Walk and Wearde Road. 7. Cross Wearde Road as a group and turn right. 8. Run along Wearde Road towards St. Stephens Road on the Left Hand side. 9. Turn left and run down St. Stephens Road 10. Turn left and run through the lane adjacent to St. Stephens Church into Rashleigh Avenue 11. Follow Rashleigh Avenue into Tower View 12. Turn right into Wearde Road and then cross to Left Hand side of Wearde Road 13. Run up Wearde Road, on the left, back to the school 14.
