2 Welcome to the 2014 Pendle Walking Festival are you take our challenge? The annual Pendle Walking Festival is the UK s largest free walking festival. The event has put the area, in Pennine Lancashire, firmly on the map as a superb destination for walkers to come and enjoy the great outdoors. Walk in the footsteps of the famous Pendle Witches... nd celebrate a 50th nniversary! Pendle is criss-crossed by a fantastic network of footpaths which is what helps us to offer you such a varied programme of walks. If this is your first Pendle Walking Festival, then enjoy having your eyes opened to our stunning scenery and great walking. nd if you ve visited Pendle before, then you ll already know what treats lie in store Choosing your walks The Pendle Walking Festival offers an enormous variety of walking opportunities, from the easiest starter walks to the challenging 45 mile Pendle Way. The length and difficulty of each walk is given, together with a description of where it takes you and what you can expect. The symbols in this programme are designed to help you choose the walks which are best for you and your walking companions. The Festival Launch The festival will be launched at arley Cabin in the attractive Pendle village of arley on Saturday 30th ugust at 10am. s always, the launch will be followed by a number of walks. The whole of the Pendle Walking Festival is part of this 50th nniversary Festival, and many of our walks are within the Forest of owland boundary. These walks are clearly marked in the programme, including the special Forest of owland Outlier walk on Saturday 6th September. This is also a special year for Pendle, as we celebrate our 40th birthday as a orough. If you re looking for a challenge we can certainly offer you one - or rather three! We have a walking marathon, the Pendle Way, and the country s newest long distance route: the Lancashire Witches Walk. Nearly every part of Pendle is touched by the magnificent 45 mile Pendle Way. You too can experience the treasures of this fantastic area yourself, walking the whole route over four thrilling days. Or why not re-enact the walk that the Pendle Witches took over 400 years ago by following the 51 mile Lancashire Witches Walk? This atmospheric walk takes you from Pendle Heritage Centre in arrowford, where you can visit the Pendle Witches exhibition, to Lancaster Castle where the women thought to be witches were hanged. We also have a walking marathon which starts in the small town of arby, which has its own Youth Hostel. If you complete any of these challenges, we will reward your efforts with our now famous Certificates of chievement. These challenge walks are not charged for, but because they are linear walks we are providing transport to take you back to your start point. The cost for the transport is listed below.
