1 Walking groups within the Northern Health and Social Care Trust area
2 walking opportunities in the northern health and social care trust area This booklet has been developed by the Northern Partnership for Physical Activity to provide information on local walking initiatives within the Northern Health and Social Care Trust area. Evidence shows that walking is one of the best types of physical activity for all age groups. For this reason, the Northern Partnership for Physical Activity has invested in training local people as walk leaders and has encouraged a wide range of community groups to develop walking schemes. In addition walking can also make you feel good, reduce stress, help you sleep better and give you more energy. How often? Every adult should try to accumulate 30 minutes of moderate physical activity on most days of the week, such as brisk walking. This might sound like a lot all in one go, but you can walk for ten minutes three times a day or 15 minutes twice a day. Tips to get started Think before you drive less than a mile Get off the bus a stop earlier Always take the stairs instead of the lift Park your car further away from your destination and walk Throw away the TV remote control! Join a local walking group or take a friend with you Walking is one of the safest, easiest and most sustainable forms of physical activity and it s FREE. Walking can help you lose those unwanted pounds, boost your energy levels, improve your mood and may even put some sparkle into your social life. Health benefits 2 Regular walking can protect you from some dangerous and devastating illnesses: Heart disease Obesity Stroke Diabetes Osteoporosis Bowel cancer 3
