2 Cultural and Theatrical Japan Overview Academy Travel is delighted to present an outstanding professional development opportunity for Australian Drama and Primary School teachers. This 15-day program is designed to enhance your knowledge and classroom skills in key areas related to the teaching of Japanese culture and performing arts to primary and secondary students. The itinerary includes a mix of live performance, hands-on activities, workshops and guided tours as well as great opportunities for networking and discussions. The national curriculum recognises an increased importance of exploring our Asian neighbours in subjects such as the arts. However, we appreciate how teacher training tends to be more Western focused and many Asian art forms feel foreign and intimidating for teachers to tackle effectively with their students. This tour helps bridge a gap in professional learning in unfamiliar and wonderful practices in theatre, music, dance and art. We seek to give our teachers the confidence to sample new forms and styles so as to incorporate Japanese arts into their classroom. She has presented at State, National and International Drama conferences to enthusiastic teachers and improvisers over the last 12 years. 6 Detailed Itinerary Please note this itinerary is subject to change dependent on local conditions, weather, opening hours, theatre options, availability of access, etc. Included meals are indicated: breakfast (B), lunch (L) and dinner (D). Day 1: Saturday, 29 September Depart Sydney Qantas direct flight from Sydney to Tokyo departs in the late evening. Above: Tokyo s centre of hip Takeshita Street in Harajuku Below: experience the ancient art of Japanese drumming at a Taiko workshop Day 2: Sunday, 30 September Arrive Tokyo and Meiji Jingu Shrine Qantas flight arrives in Tokyo in the early morning. After dropping bags at the hotel, we begin our exploration of this amazing city. We start with a walking tour of the Meiji Jingu Shrine and its beautiful surrounding gardens. There is then free time for lunch in the cutting-edge Harajuku area, including the fascinating Takeshita Street, before we continue to Yoyogi Park to see the street performers, actors and activists that gather there each Sunday afternoon. After returning to the hotel and checking in, we enjoy an early group dinner. Overnight Tokyo (B, D) Day 3: Monday, 1 October Noh Workshop Today s full day workshop will centre around Noh Theatre. The facilitator John Oglevee is a founding member of Theatre Nohgaku, whose mission is to share Noh s power and beauty with English-speaking audiences. The morning session will focus on the history and traditions of Noh, while the afternoon will involve practical and hands-on activities. In the evening, we explore our local neighbourhood of Shinjuku before meeting for an included group dinner. Overnight Tokyo (B, D) Day 4: Tuesday, 2 October Drumming Workshop and Asakusa We travel by metro to the Taiko Center in Gaienmae and meet our instructor for our Taiko Drumming Workshop. Prepare for an active morning, as over 90 minutes we will learn the basics of this traditional art form. After lunch, we explore the historic area of Asakusa, including Sensoji Temple. Overnight Tokyo (B) Day 5: Wednesday, 3 October Ghibli Museum and Butoh Dance Workshop Our day begins with a tour of the Ghibli Museum, the home of Japan s most celebrated anime studio. (This visit is subject to confirmation. If unavailable, a replacement activity will be included.) The afternoon will be spent at a Butoh Dance Workshop, learning the fundamentals of this vibrant dance-form. After returning to the hotel to freshen up, we then head out to

7 explore the bring lights of one of Tokyo s most famous areas Shibuya with its famous scramble crossing. Overnight Tokyo (B) Day 6: Thursday, 4 October Edo-Tokyo Museum and Kabuki A morning visit to the imposing Edo-Tokyo Museum will provide valuable insights about the cultural and social history of Tokyo. The museum features displays on entertainment traditions and lifestyle changes. We then continue to the high-end district of Ginza for lunch and free time to explore the area. In the late afternoon, we meet for a visit to the Kabukiza Gallery, with its exhibitions of exotic Kabuki costumes and sets, before attending an evening Kabuki performance. Overnight Tokyo (B) Day 7: Friday, 5 October To Kyoto We leave Tokyo this morning on the famous Shinkansen (bullet train) and travel past Mt Fuji to Kyoto. After checking into our hotel, we have a short orientation walk and free time for lunch. In the late afternoon, we meet our local guide in the Gion district for a walking tour of significant Kabuki and Geisha sites. At the conclusion of the walk, we will have a group dinner in the Gion area. Overnight Kyoto (B, D) Day 8: Saturday, 6 October Ninja s, Samurai s and a Tea Ceremony Today we join our Tea Ceremony Master and Japanese expert Marc Petit as we continue our study of Japanese culture. Marc, who has lived in Japan and studied Japanese culture and traditions for nearly 20 years, will lead us through an exploration of the Ninja and Samurai tradition before we experience a Tea Ceremony. In the afternoon, we visit the impressive Kyoto National Museum before attending another traditional performance (Noh or Kabuki subject to availability). Overnight Kyoto (B) Above: Kabuki exhibit at the impressive Edo-Tokyo Museum Below: the stunning Kinkakuji (Golden Temple) in Kyoto Day 9: Sunday, 7 October Kyoto Highlights Kyoto is justifiably famous for its stunning temples, gardens and castles, and today we visit many of its World-Heritage listed sites. We travel by private coach as we explore Kinkakuji (the Golden Temple), Ryoanji Temple, Nijo Castle and Kiyomizu-dera with an expert local guide. In the evening, we attend a dinner and show featuring local Maiko, the local name for apprentice Geisha. Overnight Kyoto (B, D) Day 10: Monday, 8 October Toei Kyoto Studio Park and Kimono Experience Edo-era Japan is still often portrayed in Japanese film and TV shows, often featuring colourful Ninja and Samurai characters. This morning we visit the Toei Kyoto Studio Park where such productions are made and you have the opportunity to walk

8 through sets and watch filming. The Studio also has a number of activities and experiences associated with their productions, so be ready to channel your inner Ninja! The immersive experience continues in the afternoon, as we return to the historic heart of Kyoto and don Kimonos before exploring the temples and other picturesque places in the area. Our final evening in Kyoto is spent visiting the fascinating Pontocho-dori, adjacent to the Kamo River. Overnight Kyoto (B) Day 11: Tuesday, 9 October To Hiroshima This morning we board a Shinkansen to Hiroshima, arriving in the early afternoon. After time for lunch, we travel to the extraordinary Hiroshima Peace Park and Memorial. The people of this resilient city have built a moving monument to the nearly 150,000 people who died in and following from the 6 August 1945 atomic bombing. Their zeal to subsequently promote world peace and global cooperation shines through in all aspects of the memorial. In the evening, we try a traditional Hiroshima dish the delicious Okonomiyaki pancakes. Overnight Hiroshima (B, D) Day 12: Wednesday, 10 October Miyajima Island and onto Osaka The floating Grand Torii Gate of Miyajima Island is one of Japan s most famous sites, and we are able to view it from land and water during our trip to the island this morning. We also enjoy a walking tour of Hokoku and Itsukushima Shrines, with an emphasis on the traditional dance and Noh Theatre that are an integral part of this picturesque place. After free time to explore the island, also famous for its throngs of deer, we board the Shinkansen for the journey to our last stop on the tour, Osaka. On arrival, we check in to our hotel before heading out to explore Osaka s most famous street Dotonbori. The lights, colour, crowds, street-food and character of this district are unlike anything we have experienced to date in Japan, and are an unforgettable experience. The area boasts great shops, famous food and fabulous neon signs perfect for an evening s exploration! Overnight Osaka (B) Day 13: Thursday, 11 October Osaka Castle and the Shinsekai area This morning we visit the re-built Osaka Castle, climbing to the top to enjoy great views over the city. We then travel to the old entertainment district of Shinsekai where a local guide will conduct a walking tour with a focus on the Kabuki and theatrical traditions of the area. We will conclude our tour with an included lunch at one of the traditional Kansai restaurants, famous for kushi-katsu (a form of kebab). Subject to availability, the afternoon and evening may include a Bunraku workshop and/or performance. 9 Day 14: Friday, 12 October Universal Studios and Departure After a final breakfast in Japan, we transfer by coach to Universal Studios Japan, situated on the outskirts of Osaka. Here, you have the day to explore and enjoy this massive theme park, including The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Mid-afternoon, we rejoin the coach to travel to Osaka Airport for a domestic flight back to Tokyo s Haneda Airport. Our Qantas flight back to Sydney departs Haneda in the late evening. Day 15: Saturday, 13 October Arrive in Sydney We arrive back in Sydney mid-morning. Weather on tour September/October is Autumn in Japan, and temperatures should be comfortable, ranging from nighttime minimums of 14 degrees to daytime maximums of 25 degrees. Moving around and between Japanese Cities To get to most sites within cities, we will be traveling on the metro (Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka) or trams (Hiroshima). Between cities, we will use the super-fast Shinkansen (bullet train). The Japanese public transport system is world famous for its cleanliness, efficiency and reliability.

10 Practical Information Meals Breakfast is included each day and is usually a continental buffet provided within the hotel. There are 5 included group dinners in the program. Included dinners are usually a set 3-course group menu at a local restaurant with a soft drink/beer/wine included. The restaurants are selected for their location and atmosphere. Where possible, we will try to incorporate the local specialties into the set menus. Lunches are generally arranged independently. Please advise us of any special dietary requirements on your booking form so we can best accommodate them. Required physical fitness A moderate level of physical fitness will be required in order to participate in the tour and enjoy everything that the itinerary has to offer. Specifically you should be able to do the following: Keep up with the group at all times Walk unassisted for up to three to four hours with only short breaks Walk up and down slopes Negotiate steps and slopes on archaeological sites, which are often uneven and unstable Get on and off coaches/public transport unassisted Move around airports with luggage unassisted (porterage not included) If you are concerned about your ability to meet the requirements of the trip we urge you to contact us for further information and to consult your medical practitioner for an honest assessment. The tour leaders may instruct you to take time out of the tour program if they consider that you will slow the group down or are at risk of injury or illness.
