3 VANCOUVER HAS A RENDEZ-VOUS WITH FRANCE! For its fourth edition, the non-profit association Bastille Day Festival Society is proud to invite all Vancouverites for a nice gathering around fun activities and entertainment to celebrate France s National Day. Bastille Day Festival is a FREE admission public event taking place on Saturday, July 14 th at the Yaletown Roundhouse Community Centre from 10:00AM Bastille Day Festival offers Vancouverites a once in the year opportunity to embrace, discover and enjoy the French culture and traditions in the core of Vancouver and celebrate the French art de vivre. Travel to France for free and discover how French people enjoy their time at Bastille Day Festival!

4 WHAT WILL YOU EXPERIENCE AT BASTILLE DAY FESTIVAL 2018? Join more than 6000 visitors and come to discover the French side of Vancouver! Beyond this celebration, the French community is very active in Vancouver and BC. This will be an opportunity to discover how local companies and initiatives, where French citizen are involved, are beneficial and dedicated to Vancouver. The goal of this event is to bring a French flair in Vancouver and to celebrate together the French art de vivre. Come to experience fun activities! GET A TASTE OF FRANCE! When it comes to French culture, everybody thinks about delicatessen and wine. Our French Market will deliver the best and very diverse food and drinks curated by local French businesses. ENJOY FREE CONCERTS! Delight in our beer garden with your cheese platter with a glass of wine or beer and listen to the French musical scene of Vancouver. DISCOVER YOUR INNER ARTIST DURING A LIVE PAINTING PERFORMANCE! Gather with other visitors to create a wonderful artwork with France and Bastille Day as the main theme. AN EVENT FOR ALL KIDS! Kids will get the opportunity to bring back home some nice French creations from our Kids Corner! SURPRISES! Don t miss the chance to go back home with a souvenir of France like a French beret or a t-shirt! 5 A BIT OF HISTORY WHY JULY 14 th? Aux barricades! Bastille Day is the name given in English-speaking countries to the French National Day which is celebrated on July 14 each year. In France, it is formally called la fête nationale and commonly le quatorze juillet. On July 14, 1789 a starving, poor and oppressed mob of 8,000 people stormed La Bastille, a medieval fortress and prison in Paris, emblem of the Royal authority. For the popular class, the Bastille stood as a symbol of the hypocrisy and corruption of the monarchic government - controlled mostly by nobility and clergy. The storming of La Bastille was the spark that set off the French Revolution, the end of the monarchy and the beginning of the modern republic. This revolution led to the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen of 1789 August 26 - the precursor to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations in THE PHRYGIAN CAP: THE CAP OF THE LIBERTY Originated from the Ancient World, the Phrygian cap Bonnet Phrygien in French - has been a symbol of freedom across the centuries in the Roman world: a red headpiece, was used to mark slaves became free. In France, it was first worn by revolutionaries in 1790 as the red cap of liberty, one year after the storming of La Bastille. By wearing the Bonnet Phrygien, the Parisian working class made their revolutionary ardour and popular solidarity immediately recognizable. In 1793 the cap actually became mandatory in the Assemblies in Paris. Since then, it has been seen atop the head of the Marianne. Today the Phrygian cap is part of the permanent French identity and continues to be associated with the national allegorical figure of Liberty.

From 10am Bastille Day will take over The Roundhouse Community Center and immerse you in the French culture, as if you were walking along the Seine river! FRENCH MARKET 10AM TO 8PM Discover your inner foodie with our French Market, the best & very diverse food curated by local French businesses. Each year we satisfy your tastebuds with delicious crepes and croque-monsieurs made with love by the Bastille Day Festival Team. Come by the Exhibition Hall to get your cheese platter and pare it with a glass of wine or a good french beer. COME TO MEET OUR EXHIBITORS! Discover French delicacies with Faubourg, La Baguette et compagnie, Oliver s Bread, Damien s Belgian Waffles, JB s crêpes and Plaisir Sucré. Immerse yourself in the French atmosphere with Alliance Française of Vancouver, Cousteau school, Topi Import, Planet France, Denise Decloux Photography. Speak and play some sports games with Whitecaps FC and Sport Celebration on the occasion of the soccer world cup, an event French people would not miss! He also has an extensive repertoire of blues, jazz, brazilian, reggae and funk music. You can often find him performing French music and art in various places in Vancouver. Alisa Blanc is a young French-Japanese artist of 17 years old who loves to share her passion for music to her audience. After winning Pacifique en Chanson in 2016, participating to a song contest in Quebec and interpreting a song for the Vancouver Fashion week in 2017, she will be on the stage of the Bastille Day Festival to present her new songs. Van Django is an acoustic string ensemble made up of four of Canada s most talented and eclectic musicians. Van Django s music is well-rooted in the gypsy jazz of 1930 s Paris France, but beyond that it s all pure blue-skying; flights of dazzling fancy, driving rhythms and boundless creativity featuring original compositions and arrangements including humorous mash-ups that showcase their eclectic influences in full regalia. Manu Reymond is a French singer and composer who traveled the world to perform in various festivals in France, England, Indonesia, Australia and the US. He recently moved to Vancouver where he just released his first EP In the Light and shot his first video clip. Anyone can dance and sing along to Early Spirit s folkfusion music style.
