Produced by Volunteers for Volunteers Wheelchair Adjustment Training in Bali and Sumba. During July and August Liz Noordhoek ( Physiotherapist and WFK Workshop Volunteer ) along with her husband, John, ( Mechanical Engineer and WFK Workshop Volunteer ) and Occupational Therapist Linda McAllister conducted training sessions on the Indonesian islands of Bali and Sumba. The training sessions focussed on the correct assembly of our wheelchairs and the adjustment of each wheelchair to properly suit the needs of the disabled child receiving the wheelchair. Liz reported: A young 6 year old girl had never been in a chair. As soon as her chair was complete she was shown how to self-propel. This was an amazing thing to witness, a child being given the opportunity to decide where she would like to go. 2 A Word from the CEO CEO Gordon Hudson The Rotary Foundation is dedicated to improving the lot of and reducing suffering of people throughout the world. It recognises people who have made a substantial contribution to its efforts by naming them Paul Harris (the founder of Rotary) Fellows. We must congratulate our volunteer Don Kidson, who, through his untiring efforts as our distribution coordinator, was recently named a Paul Harris Fellow. Once again we must thank the Premier s department for donating $30,000 towards our rent, presented to us by our local member Paul Miles at a morning tea. With a donation of $20,000 from the Christian Brothers and one other donor, our rent is covered for a year. Also I acknowledge a cheque of $33,000 from the Rotary Club of Scarborough Trust as a major contribution to our overheads. Apart from the hundreds of ladies throughout Australia busily knitting knee rugs and dolls, there is another relatively unknown group of over 70 ladies working from home. Coordinated by our Beppie de Kuyer, they cut and sew the quite complex colourful covers for the seat back, PSDs and knee separator. In order to keep up with wheelchair production, they produce over 2,500 items per month! Although our wheelchair is very strongly made, our keen technical progress group remains extremely active responding to feedback from the field and looking at continually improving design and durability to suit the very rough conditions often experienced by our wheelchairs. The never ending current list includes the cushion where we get many differences of opinion from professionals, the recently redesigned knee separator, a stronger tray, better tires for front and rear wheels, improved brake mechanism, improved harness, replacing the tie ribbons on PSDs and a firmer head rest swivel fixing we never rest. Our ingenious workshop coordinator and this magazine editor Bob Sheridan has been in the wars lately. Following complications from an operation 6 weeks ago he has been confined to home and we have missed his helpfulness and record keeping in the workshop. He has however, kept up to date and among other things worked on producing this sought after magazine. I m glad to hear that we should welcome him back soon. Some late news from the Royal show. Our wheelchair which was entered in the Men s Shed craft metalwork competition, won first prize.zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Will have given us some welcome exposure. 4 Our Wonderful Ionian Friends Ionian Clubs are Friendship Groups for women and are in all states of Australia, New Zealand and Great Britain. The members have a common aim of sharing interests and providing companionship and stimulation, particularly for newcomers to the area and transferees from other Ionian clubs. There are several Interest and Activity groups one of which is the Perth Craft group which is a valued supporter of Wheelchairs for Kids and has been for many years. The ladies have made many rugs and hundreds of teddy bears, often the always colourful rugs have matching teddies. After every monthly meeting Ionians donate many teddies and rugs, the photo at right shows a recent donation, 47 teddies and 22 rugs. Many of the matching sets were made by sisters-in-law Bev and Lyn Bond ( below ). Bev, currently living in Victoria and a member of WA Ionians, introduced Lyn to knitting and the project. Together with the Craft group they have produced this wonderful collection which this year amounts to 38 rugs and 180 teddies. The ladies are aiming for 200 by the end of this year, their knitting needles are never still.
