3 PRODUCE TO PEOPLE Help the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank distribute fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as other grocery items, at our weekly P2P distributions. By attending a direct distribution, you will experience a powerful, introspective glimpse into the food insecurity that exists in our very own Pittsburgh communities. This eye opening volunteer experience places volunteers in a rewarding position as they spend the morning helping the Food Bank directly fight hunger. Together we will distribute (between 20K and 30K) of food directly to families in need. Each Saturday, volunteers are needed to help us unload product from trucks, set up the distribution line, distribute items to the recipients and help elderly individuals carry their groceries. It is a volunteer experience that you won t want to miss. What you need to know about volunteering for Produce to People: You must call or ahead of time and arrange your volunteer opportunity with a volunteer coordinator: volops@gpcfb.org or x301. If you are coordinating a group of volunteers, we suggest you schedule your date at least 3 months in advance. Distributions take place on some Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings. Please see the attached calendar for specific dates, locations and volunteer shift times. PLEASE NOTE: Some of the distributions take place outdoors (hot, cold, rainy, etc.), so please dress accordingly and be prepared to get your hands dirty. By helping feed undernourished children, we can help them concentrate and perform better in school. With 1 in 5 children in our region not getting enough to eat, Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank was selected as a grant recipient for this school based food pantry program. Our first distributions at Arlington and Stevens were a great success, serving 155 students in Arlington and close to 70 at Stevens. We expect these numbers to grow, especially during the holidays, and we need YOU to ensure their success. Volunteers are critical to the success of any pantry and are needed to help with a variety tasks including set-up, food distribution, line management and clean-up. Please note that volunteers will need to lift up to 40 lbs. and maneuver steps. Both Stevens and Woolslair are close to 100 years old and have proven to be logistically challenging. We re confident that our mighty volunteer base will rise to meet these challenges however, and make sure no child goes hungry this school year. For more information, or to volunteer, please or call the Volunteer Team at VolOps@gpcfb.org; ext As always, thank you for your support of the Food Bank and the families we serve!
