1 DAFFODIL FESTIVAL 2018 STREET PARADE BANDS & LARGE MARCHING UNITS USING BUSES (SU#5) The Parade will start at: 10:15 a.m. in Tacoma 2:30 p.m. in Sumner 12:45 p.m. in Puyallup 5:00 p.m. in Orting MARCHERS: IF IT LOOKS LIKE RAIN, IT PROBABLY WILL; SO, BRING RAIN GEAR! Unit number should be displayed on front passenger-side window and left rear-side window. Make sure your Unit numbers including the number of buses and what cities you will be parading through. Example: #29 (3) T, P, S, O means your 29th in parade line-up, you have 3 buses and you will participate in Tacoma, Puyallup, Sumner and Orting. 1. Buses/support trucks will assemble at Stellar Industial Supply at the Parking Area located at 711 E 11th Street. Please assemble at least 30 minutes prior to your group departing for the parade line-up point. To Reach Stellar Industial Supply: a. From I-5 northbound, take Portland Avenue exit #134. Turn left onto Portland Avenue. From I-5 southbound, take the Puyallup/Portland Avenue Exit #135. Merge to E 27th St to Portland Avenue. Turn right onto Portland Avenue. b. Go north on Portland Avenue to E 11th Street. c. Turn left on E 11th Street. The parking area is located on the right 1/4 of a mile from Portland Ave. 2. Starting at 9:15 A.M., by unit number and in order, bands/marching units will be rout step to the parade line-up point. 3. Buses and Vans will depart the assembly area in unit groups for the disband area as soon as possible. Turn right on E. 11th Street to St. Paul Ave. MAKE SURE YOU ARRIVE BEFORE YOUR DEPARTURE TIME. PARADE # DEPARTURE :15 a.m :45 a.m :15 a.m. 111 & Above 10:45 a.m. YOUR PARADE NUMBER WILL DETERMINE YOUR APPROXIMATE DEPARTURE TIME. Page 1
2 BUSES: 1. When leaving the Stellar Industrial Supply parking lot, turn right to St. Paul Ave. then left on St. Paul Ave. to E. 15th St. (Follow posted signs.) 2. Turn right on E-15th St. Road turns left and name changes to E. D. Street. 3. Turn right on E-26th and travel to Pacific Avenue. 4. Turn right on Pacific Avenue (two blocks) to S. 24th Street. 5. After turning right on S. 24th Ave., a parade official will direct you to the disband parking area. Tacoma bus disband is on South 24th Street (Puyallup Avenue) between South C Street and Pacific Avenue. 6. Park as directed by the Tacoma Police Department detail in bus disband area. The following rules must be followed: a. DRIVERS ARE TO REMAIN WITH VEHICLES AT ALL TIMES. b. Park as directed and be prepared to move forward at all times. As earlier buses move, you move forward to make room for later arriving buses NOTE: Tacoma Link Light Rail trolley will be operating on E 25th Street and Pacific Avenue. Please be aware of this traffic problem and exercise caution. The trolley has the right-of-way. PARADE PARTICIPANTS: 1. When departing the Stellar Indutrial Area, move in rout step turning right on to E-11th Street. 2. Go over the bridge toward A. Street. Line up in parade formation as directed by parade marshals. 3. Stop prior to Pacific Avenue and move onto the parade route when directed by Parade Marshals. Do not stop during maneuvers. Please maintain forward motion. Parade will run from South 12th Street to South 21st Street on Pacific Avenue. At South17th Street the parade will continue on the east side (water side/left lane) to South 21st Street to avoid Sound Transit Trolley. Parade marshals and Tacoma police will direct you from South 21st Street to South 24th Street. Turn left on South 24th Street (Puyallup Avenue) to bus disband area. BUSES GOING FROM TACOMA TO PUYALLUP 1. Come straight to Puyallup. Food concessions and restrooms are available for participants and drivers while your band members are staging. 2. Turn right on East C Street to East 26th Street. Page 2
3 3. Turn right on East 26th Street to Pacific Avenue. 4. Turn left on Pacific Avenue and enter the I-5 southbound lanes (toward Portland, OR.) 5. Exit I-5 at exit 127 and proceed towards Puyallup on Freeway Exit freeway onto 9th Street SW near the South Hill Mall. 7. Turn left. Proceed north on 9th Street S.W. 8. At 15th Avenue SW, proceed ahead onto Fairway Drive (behind the fair) 9. A parade marshal will be there. The buses will be pre-staged. Please keep passengers on buses. 10. Wait here until parade marshals direct you to the bus parking area in the Red parking lot. BANDS & BUSES BEGINNING THE DAY IN PUYALLUP 1. Approach the Red Lot via the intersection of 9th Street SW & 15th Avenue SE. Due to parade congestion and closed roads do not attempt to get to the Red Lot from the north or from anywhere in downtown Puyallup. (Fastest route is to exit Freeway 512 at 9th Street SW / 94th Avenue E.) 2. Fairway Drive near The Fair s roller coaster is the pre-staging area. Watch for a volunteer. 3. You will not be permitted to enter the Red Lot via any other route. 4. Units beginning your day in Puyallup: Parade Number Arrive at Red Lot :30 a.m :15 p.m :00 p.m. The parade number determines your parking order in the Red Lot 1. Parade marshal will direct buses from pre-staging to Red Lot in approximate parade order. 2. Proceed north on 5th Street SW. Turn left on 9th Avenue SW & turn right into Red Lot. 3. Follow parade marshal s parking instructions. 4. Once parked, the bus may unload. The bus will be in this same spot for re-boarding after Parade is completed. 5. Here bus drivers may take a meal and restroom breaks, but must be back to buses before bands arrive. (Bands will return to bus approximately 35 minutes after they cross the starting line.) Band members proceed as pedestrians across 7th Avenue SW into Sparks Stadium. Restrooms are available here. Food is available for purchase. Then proceed to south grandstand and follow instructions of parade marshals. Ted Brown Music Co. is offering FREE on the spot instrument repair call Page 3
4 The parade will start on 7th Avenue SW at the corner of 5th Street SW and will end on 4th Avenue SW and 5th Street SW. After completing parade, band members will walk south in front of Meeker Elementary School and then through Sparks Stadium parking lot to board the buses waiting in red parking lot. TO SUMNER STAGING AREA 1. When loaded, proceed to Sumner as a group. Stay with your group. Due to shortage of parking space, it is important you arrive in Sumner in parade order. 2. Turn right onto 5th Street SW. Proceed southbound behind fairgrounds on 5th-9th extension. 3. Turn left on 15th Avenue SW and proceed under freeway. 4. Turn left on South Meridian. 5. Turn right at northbound (Auburn/Seattle) ramp onto Freeway The highway flows to the right with easy access onto northbound Hwy 167. KEEP TO THE RIGHT. 7. Bus groups will exit onto Hwy 410 eastbound toward Sumner/Buckley. This is a place to be very careful. You will be in the middle lane. You must merge immediately to your RIGHT into the exit only lane. Other eastbound traffic will be merging left into the through traffic lane. Some general traffic may also be exiting here, but only the group of buses will be permitted to turn left at next corner. 8. Turn left at light onto Traffic Avenue toward Sumner. 9. Turn right on Thompson under railroad trestle. 10. Turn left on Kincaid Avenue (3rd street beyond railroad trestle.) Here follow Parade Marshal Instructions on where to unload passengers and equipment. 11. Buses will be directed by city police or their representatives down Academy Street to Meeker. 12. The parade starts at Kincaid and Main Street and ends at Lewis Avenue. TO DEPART SUMNER - BUSES 1. All Marching Units will turn right onto Lewis Avenue to Academy Street. Buses will be parked on Academy Street. 2. Buses proceed east on Academy Street to Valley Avenue. 3. Turn right on Valley Avenue to enter the 410 Freeway (units stopping after Sumner), or proceed south to Orting (units going on to Orting). Page 4
5 TO PROCEED TO ORTING 1. Units going to Orting will follow the Sumner/Orting Highway (SR 162). The Pierce County Search & Rescue 4 x 4 and Webfooters Jeeps have communications with law enforcement. Please feel free to ask for assistance at any time. 2. Buses should proceed in band groups as directed. We try to send band buses to Orting before the floats, as the floats are slow. 3. Buses will enter Orting on Washington Avenue North. Valley Avenue (SR 162) turns into Washington Avenue at Orting. (Map) 4. Travel to the intersection of Washington Avenue North & Calistoga Street. Turn right onto Calistoga Street. (If you are very late this may change, but Marshals will be there for directions.) 5. Turn left on Van Scoyoc Avenue SW and a parade official will assist you in parking at the trail parking lot between Van Scoyoc Avenue SW and Bridge Street. 6. Band members will queue on Bridge Street, opposite the Eagles Hall. 7. Band members & marching units are welcome at the Orting Eagles Aerie (downstairs) for rest and free refreshments prior to start of the parade. ORTING PARADE ROUTE 1. The Orting parade starts on Washington Avenue at Bridge Street. 2. The parade ends at Whitesell Street. 1. Bands return to buses via the Trail. 2. Buses wishing to leave early will: DEPARTURE DIRECTIONS a. Turn right on Bridge Street South to Eldredge Avenue SW. b. Turn right on Eldredge Avenue SW and proceed across town to Whitehawk Blvd NW. c. Turn right on Whitehawk Blvd NW to Washington Avenue North. d. Turn left on Washington Avenue North.
