5 DONS SEASON PREVIEW Total Team, Total Soccer Strategy to Drive 2004 Performance Head coach Erik Visser has been around the USF soccer program for almost 25 years. So when he says he is enthusiastic about this year s squad, it is a statement worth noting. Visser will have his team focusing on the USF tradition of playing complete soccer. That includes ball possession, working the ball upfield and creating scoring chances. Be intuitive, be creative and capitalize on the opposition s mistakes. Reflecting this return to tradition, the team s motto this year is Total team, total soccer. As we enter 2004, he says, I believe we have several positives. First, we have a talented blend of seasoned veterans and new recruits. In fact, I believe our recruiting class is one of the best we have had in many years. Our team is very athletic at every position; agile, fast and strong. And, finally, we expect our new FieldTurf surface will provide us with a home field advantage. Last year we started playing on our new field in midseason. The players became comfortable with the bounce, feel and speed of the surface as the year moved along. We expect our increased familiarity with the field also will work to our benefit. However, the success of this season s squad will be dependent on integrating the recruits with our returning players and building a cohesive team. If the team jells quickly we could have a really good year. We will see how the pieces fit together. Visser s is hoping that the intense preseason schedule will help bring the team together. We have added a very strong pre-season schedule because, the last couple of years, we felt it took time for the team to come together and get ready. We have two exhibition games, one against California, a strong team that is expected to make the playoffs. The season then starts with three tournaments: The Diadora Classic over Labor Day weekend, the Brown Classic which features games against Brown and Yale, and the Santa Clara Classic. We believe these games will be a great opportunity for us to see where we are in preparation for conference play. This year the West Coast Conference has selected a double round robin, a format that provides a better gauge of consistent play. This new schedule calls for 12 conference games rather than six, taking away the chance that home field advantage or a fluke goal can determine the champion. In reviewing his 2004 team, Coach Visser noted how pleased he was about the depth, experience, athletic talent, and spirit of the players, We have an outstanding number of gifted players competing for key positions. Goalkeepers I believe we are in a good position this year, with three solid Division I goalkeepers, Visser said. Senior Mark Muleady, who started six games last year and recorded a 2.00 goals against average, looked sharp in the spring season. Joining him are two excellent returning sophomores, Geremy Uhl and Travis Sharp. Uhl started the last seven games of last season and recorded a 1.21 GAA, while Sharp started five contests allowing a 1.17 average. All three of these players got considerable experience last year and will be competing for the starting position. It is my preference that one of these three earns the starting slot and plays every game, added Visser. But in any case, we have good depth at this slot. Defenders We have several outstanding defenders returning this year, Visser stated, but the nucleus of the backline are senior Chris Schwarze and sophomore Kevin Long. Schwarze, who was named first team all-west Coast Conference last year, has been a three-year starter. With his experience and leadership, he will anchor the defense squad. Long, who started 16 games for USF last season and was named to the U.S. under-20 national team in the spring, will anchor the left defensive position. Andy Almquist, a defender with two years experience for USF, gained valuable additional experience playing for the Ajax amateur club during the summer. Visser further stated he is looking forward to the emergence of converted sophomore forward Robert Smith as a defender. Robert, an extremely athletic and fast player, is quickly broadening his skills to play in the back. In addition to playing quality defense, we expect Robert to add a lot to our attack. Visser s top-flight recruiting class will also add to the defense depth. Robert Valentino from Cave Creek, Ariz. and Luis Aguilar, the Foothill Conference s 2002 MVP from Rio Honda Jr. College in Santa Ana, Calif., should both see action. According to Visser, both of these players are very tenacious and are expected to have an immediate, impact on defense. The Dons also added three freshmen. Kyle Suryan, captain of the Mater Dei High School team in Santa Ana, Calif., Jay Abrigo from Mililani, Hawaii, and Jeff Russell, league 2003 MVP at San Marin High (Novato, Calif.).

6 Midfielders Visser believes finding the right midfield chemistry will be a key factor to the team s success. We are fortunate to have such a solid depth of talent at this position. Our challenge will be finding the right combination of players. The midfield will be anchored by returning junior David Martin, a strong left-footer who distributes the ball very well, has good vision and, at 6 2 has a great physical presence. Also anchoring the midfield is sophomore Matt Languis, who is very strong on the ball with both feet. He provides the Dons with a presence both offensively and defensively. Matt was named honorable mention all-wcc after last season. Competing for starting right midfield positions are veterans Luke Holmes, Cameron Kolovos, Daniel DeGeer, as well as freshman Mike Ross from Phoenix, Ariz. The left midfield will be guided by returning senior Al Bedrossian. A passionate player, Al is the spiritual leader of the team. Other returning left midfielders include the attacking senior Mike Varas and redshirt Neil Stuart, whose brother played for USF. Visser also expects contributions from David Rodriquez, a very quick and nifty ball handler from Marin Academy in San Rafael, Calif. and Chris Bachrach from Los Angeles. At the center midfield position, players include new recruit Noah Nudell from Agoura Hills, Calif. Noah, captain of his club team for the past six years, is an excellent distributor of the ball and should add a lot to the position. The team also looks forward to the arrival of newcomers Cole Wollerman from New Orleands, La. and Ben Dessard, a top recruit from France who is currently recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Ben is expected to begin play in early spring. Forwards The frontline has a youthful, but talented corps. We expect a breakthrough performance from sophomore Aaron Chandler, who came on strong at the end of last year and scored some key goals. Returning redshirt Bergman also stood out during the spring season. Adding to the depth of our forward line will be our new recruits. We are very excited about new team member Brandon McDonald. Brandon is a McDonald s NSCAA high school all-american from Cactus High in Glendale, Ariz. Also joining the team is Jordan Keyes from Central Marin. At 6 1, Jordan is an athletic player who will challenge opponents defenses with his powerful flip throw-ins and physical play. ###
