2 LAST TIME OUT Minnesota United vs New York City FC February 20, 2019 Orlando City Stadium, Orlando, FL Preseason Loons Keep Fifth Clean Sheet in 1-0 Win The Loons concluded their Orlando City Invitational slate against NYCFC, and once again would look to the midfield for its scoring chances during this preseason contest. Miguel Ibarra was able to get MNUFC up early, settling a long cross and drilling a shot towards the far post that snuck through the defense and into the back of the net. The busy schedule began to take its toll on the squad, with missed chances nearly coming back to haunt the Loons. Rookie goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair played all 90 minutes, keeping the fifth consecutive clean sheet for Minnesota during the preseason. The squad concluded its preseason with a record and now heads into the regular season undefeated. Both teams have done their fair share of rebuilding in the offseason in hopes of changing their fortunes in The core of the Loons roster returns for the new year, along with key additions including Designated Player Jan Gregus and MLS veterans Ike Opara and Osvaldo Alonso. Minnesota aims to be a contender this season as it opens it new stadium, Allianz Field, in 2019 and an opening win in Vancouver would be a strong statement to the league. Adrian Heath s men will need to put together a complete game to overcome the road woes that plagued them last season. Minnesota scrapped to a 1-0 home win, and failed to comeback on the road as it fell 4-2 in Vancouver. Minnesota and Vancouver were league opponents prior to both clubs joining MLS. They last met in the USSF Division 2 Pro League in New Whitecaps FC Head Coach Marc Dos Santos coached Ottawa Fury against MNUFC during its NASL era. Darwin Quintero led MNUFC in nearly all offensive categories in He had 11 goals, 15 assists, 78 shots, 32 on target and 85 corner kicks. Quintero led the Loons with five MLS Team of the Week appearances last year, and was the only one to win Player of the Week. The last meeting with Vancouver was in the middle of a six-game point streak for Quintero. He assisted both of the Loons goals in a 4-2 loss to Whitecaps FC. Miguel Ibarra was just behind Quintero in the offensive stats. He had seven goals and eight assists and appeared in all but one game in This is the first season since joining MLS that MNUFC will not play its home games on artificial turf. Minnesota is against Vancouver in MLS games and has not yet won at BC Place. MNUFC added its third Designated Player, Jan Gregus, during the offseason. The Slovakia international comes to Minnesota from FC Copenhagen in the Danish Superliga. Vancouver s top three goalscorers from 2018, Kei Kamara, Alphonso Davies and Cristian Techera, are no longer with the team this season. MNUFC opens the 2019 season with five road games. The Loons will face three Western Conference opponents in the opening three weeks, making their way down the West Coast of the continent. Starting in Vancouver, the Loons then head to play the San Jose Earthquakes and complete the journey against the LA Galaxy. Minnesota went undefeated in its preseason fixtures, with a record of while scoring 12 goals and conceding just two. The Loons kept a clean sheet in five consecutive games. Both teams failed to qualify for the 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs. Vancouver led MLS with eight red cards in In 2018, Whitecaps FC scored half of its goals in the final 30 minutes of its games. 4

5 MINNESOTA 2015 MINNESOTA UNITED UNITED NEWS AND FC GOAL NOTES MAP Coaches and players thank Mortenson and all Allianz Field workers To all the great people at Mortenson, all the guys who ve worked on that stadium, architects, all the builders, thank you so much. It s not very often in my career I ve been able to say I m moving into the best stadium in the country, so thanks for everything. Really looking forward to playing in the great place you built us. MNUFC Head Coach Adrian Heath I want to thank everyone, the construction workers, literally everyone included, for the blood, sweat, probably tears you guys put into making Allianz Field a beautiful and special place to play. Ike Opara I want to congratulate all the workers that took part in the construction of Allianz Field. They are an important component in creating a home for us to play in when we re in Minnesota. Pura vida and you re all a part of the club. Francisco Calvo Midfielder Jan Gregus named into Top 10 Newcomers by MLS.com Minnesota United have needed a lot of things in their first two seasons of existence, but perhaps nothing more than some proper bite and organization in midfield. In January, they used their last Designated Player slot to corral Jan Gregus, an excellent midfield traffic director with plenty of UEFA Champions League, Europa League and international experience. However, the 28-year-old is not what you d call a hard man in central park; his defensive successes are much more likely to involve jumping a passing lane or slowing an opponent through keen positioning than it is to include crunching tackles. Mere days after signing Gregus, the Loons lightened his workload by picking up veteran Ozzie Alonso to play bad midfield cop. This master stroke will free the Slovakian to do what he does best, and the two have formed a fast chemistry during a preseason that has suddenly stingy Minnesota shut out all of their MLS foes. Allianz Field is complete Inspired by the rippling waters of the land of 10,000 lakes, Allianz Field will be a dynamic icon for the City of Saint Paul and the state of Minnesota. Drawing from international Stadium design, the venue s 360-degree canopy and 2,920-seast, pyramid-shaped supporters section will make for one of the most intimidating atmospheres in Major League Soccer. Allianz Field was designed by Populous of Kansas City, Missouri, and built by Mortenson of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Since the initial unveiling of the stadium renderings, Allianz Field has been widely acclaimed for its innovative modern design and aesthetic beauty, the use of environmentally-sensitive systems and materials, and a focus on fan amenities and the game of soccer. The design is inspired by the natural wonders of Minnesota including the Northern Lights, great rivers and countless lakes and features a first-of-its-kind exterior skin made of Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) in conjunction with an extensive LED lighting system to help provide an unequaled sports and entertainment experience for fans and visitors. The dynamic exterior skin of Allianz Field compliments a 360-degree roof canopy and an open concourse design surrounding a sunken natural grass playing field. The open roof stadium, grass playing surface and exclusive use of LED lighting helps produce a low-energy footprint for the stadium. Water collected from the roof and other surfaces flows into an innovative central stormwater system built by the City of Saint Paul to serve the entire 35-acre development that surrounds the stadium. Indicative of the environmental enhancements that are part of the design of Allianz Field, the 192 mature trees planted around the stadium use the stormwater system for irrigation, and are placed amidst nearly three acres of new public green space and plantings that have been added to the area. Heath on the offseason and starting 2019 on the road From the middle of last season we ve got eight new players who will probably start on Saturday plus the fact now, Finlay is back, plus Molino is around the corner. So we ve never had the strength in depth, and I know for any coach in the league, that s a really really positive. We ve had a really good preseason and I think we re all excited about the season getting underway. It s never easy going five on the road to start with. It would have been nice to have a couple of home games in there, but it is what it is. We ve got 34 games so we know what s coming but this is a different group, different mentality, different mindset, I ve already seen that within the group and I don t think it s going to be as big an issue as it s been in the past. 5

The league features 24 teams from across the United States and Canada. After a successful bid to host the FIFA World Cup in 1994, the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) founded MLS to bring a top-level soccer league back to the country for the first time since 1984, when the original NASL folded. The league was set to begin play in 1996 with 10 teams: Colorado Rapids, Columbus Crew (SC), D.C. United, Dallas Burn (FC Dallas), Kansas City Wiz (Sporting Kansas City), Los Angeles Galaxy, New England Revolution, NY/NJ MetroStars (New York Red Bulls), San Jose Clash (Earthquakes) and Tampa Bay Mutiny. The league s first game was played on April 6, 1996 as the San Jose Clash played D.C. United in front of 31,000 fans at Spartan Stadium. The league drew large crowds in its opening season, pulling star power from around North America and building on the excitement of the 1994 FIFA World Cup. As MLS has continued to grow, clubs have begun moving out of shared American football venues and into soccer-specific stadium, led by Columbus Crew (SC), who moved into the soccer-specific MAPFRE Stadium in Currently, 20 teams play in soccer-specific venues. The league is split into the Eastern and Western Conferences. Each team plays 34 games during the season. Teams play all conference opponents twice, once at home and once on the road, and each team in the other conference once, with an even balance of home and away games. The top seven teams in each conference at the end of the year qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs. Starting in 2019, the league has adopted a new single-elimination format for the entirety of the MLS Cup Playoffs. The top seven teams in each conference qualify for postseason, with the regular-season conference champions receiving a first-round bye. The second through seventh seeds will play the opening round games, with the highest seed hosting games throughout the tournament. The winners will move on to join the oneseed teams in the conference semifinals. The winner of each conference championship will move on the the MLS Cup Final. The team with the best regular season record will host the final.
