3 COLORADO RAPIDS vs SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC DICK S SPORTING GOODS PARK, Commerce City, Colo. April 23, 2016 (WEEK 8, MLS Game #70) 7 p.m. MT (Altitude; Q13 FOX) A pair of clubs who have turned around their fortunes recently meet when the Colorado Rapids face Seattle Sounders FC in a Western Conference matchup Saturday evening at Dick s Sporting Goods Park. The Rapids won for a second time in a row and their third time in three home matches last weekend in a 2-1 snowbound victory against the New York Red Bulls. Sounders FC have made it three games undefeated after opening the year with three consecutive losses, claiming a 2-1 home win against Philadelphia Union at CenturyLink Field last Saturday. The final meeting win was just the second for the Rapids vs. Seattle over the last five seasons. Since the start of 2011, Sounders FC have 12 of 15 meetings in regular season and MLS Cup play, with one draw. Sounders FC have won on their last two visits to Commerce City, including a 3-1 win last April 18 in the only meeting at Dick s Sporting Goods Park. Coaches record: Pablo Mastroeni vs. SEA: P6 W1 L5 D0 Sigi Schmid vs. COL: P47 W27 L12 D8 COLORADO RAPIDS The Colorado Rapids won their second match on the trot, hitting for a late winner again in a 2-1 win against the New York Red Bulls on Saturday evening at Dick s Sporting Goods Park. The Rapids are in third place in the Western Conference with 13 points from 7 games. LAST MATCH After kickoff was delayed nearly 30 minutes due to blizzard conditions, Jermaine Jones, making his debut for the Rapids, opened the scoring in the 20th minute, slotting home a low cross from Mekeil Williams near the penalty spot. The Red Bulls were able to end their nearly month-long goalless streak in the 60th minute when Ronald Zubar headed home a Sacha Kljestan cross at the back post after a cleared corner kick.. But the Rapids found a late winner as Jones played provider, sliding a well-weighted ball into the path of Dominique Badji in the 82nd minute. Rapids head coach Pablo Mastroeni made two changes to the team that hit for a 2-1 win against Sporting Kansas City at Children s Mercy Park. Mekeil Williams came in at right back for Dillon Serna, and Jermaine Jones started in the midfield in place of Dominique Badji. 4 TEAM NEWS The Rapids recorded their second consecutive win in a row in the victory against the Red Bulls, their fourth triumph in the last six matches. Two games in a row where we ve jumped ahead, drawn and then found a way to win the game. That fortifies the brain, it fortifies the belief, it fortifies all the work that we ve done in the preseason to this point. It validates everything. That spirit, that drive and that determination to get forward and find a way to get that second goal, said Rapids head coach Pablo Mastroeni. Making his club debut, Jermaine Jones scored a goal and added an assist. It was the first goal for Jones in league play since Oct. 4, 2014, when he netted for the New England Revolution. He really injected the group with a lot of energy, a lot of quality football, a lot of guile and experience. The most important thing for us that this is a guy who hasn t played a full 90 minutes in a few months. In these kind of conditions, you can make so many excuses, but he was a real leader tonight and just found a way to get involved and really make a difference on both sides of the ball him scoring that goal is a validation of his commitment to being in the right place at the right time, but most importantly, I think the guys will look at that as a performance that we can rely on, said Mastroeni. Said Jones: Everybody knows I m a player, I love the freedom to go box-to-box and in my age of 34 people say I maybe can t do it anymore, it s nice to prove people wrong. Luis Solignac recorded his first assist of the season, setting up the game-winner. Solignac has two goals and an assist this season, all over the last four matches, since he was installed in the starting lineup. Mekeil Williams made his first start since March 20, coming in at right back and recorded his first career MLS assist. Marco Pappa started his fifth consecutive match, coming off for a substitute after 73 minutes and after the match the club announced he will miss the next 2-4 matches after suffering a sprain to the MCL in his left knee. Dominique Badji came off the substitutes bench and scored his first goal of the season. It was the third goal of his MLS career, his first since netting in the season finale last year on Oct. 25 vs. Portland. These are guys who have something that you can t coach; an unbelievable knack for playing football. In the end, it was a fantastic display of quality overcoming the conditions. I really look forward to those type of relationships continuing to bud and grow, and it s always when you get three points as well, said Mastroeni. SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC Seattle Sounders FC ran their undefeated streak to three matches, defeating Philadelphia Union on Saturday evening at CenturyLink Field. Sounders FC are in a tie for eighth place in the Western Conference with 7 points from 6 games. LAST MATCH Sounders FC broke through four minutes before halftime, as Chad Marshall headed home an Andreas Ivanschitz corner kick from the right inside the back post. The home side went up a man in the 53rd minute of play when referee Drew Fischer showed Union's Roland Alberg a second yellow card. The lead was then duly doubled in the 71st minute as Ivanschitz delivered a cutting through-ball from midfield into Jordan Morris, who drove a near-post finish past Philadelphia goalkeeper Andre Blake for his first professional goal. Union were able to pull back a goal two minutes, when Sebastien Le Toux finished off inside the area after taking a layoff from a cross from C.J. Sapong. Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmid made two changes to the team that hit for a late 1-1 draw with the Houston Dynamo at BBVA Compass Stadium. Dylan Remick came in at fullback for Joevin Jones, and Oalex Anderson started out wide in place of Aaron Kovar. SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC ( ): Stefan Frei - Tyrone Mears, Brad Evans, Chad Marshall, Dylan Remick - Osvaldo Alonso, Cristian Roldan (Herculez Gomez 75) - Oalex Anderson (Nelson Haedo Valdez 63), Clint Dempsey, Andreas Ivanschitz - Jordan Morris (Joevin Jones 82) TEAM NEWS Sounders FC extended their undefeated streak to three games after losing their first three games of the season, winning for a second match in that span. The unbeaten streak is good for us. We re happy about that, said Andreas Ivanschitz. The way we started the game wasn t good at all but after the first 20 minutes we played good. And in the second half, the game opened for us, but we should have scored more goals today. Said center back Brad Evans: The guys were hungry tonight to bang away some goals. Guys finding the ball in the right spot were the key tonight we re at home and we got to prove ourselves at home and step out. That s the name of the game at home. Jordan Morris scored the first goal of his professional career, netting the eventual game-winner. Morris was starting a fifth match of the season. MLS GAME INFORMATION

5 He ll be a lot more confident [now], Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmid said. There s a big weight off his shoulders. That weight, each week there was probably another five pounds that got added to that. By now, there was about pounds. You eliminate those pounds, you can run a lot lighter next week. Ivanschitz collected assists on both Sounders FC goals, the first career multiple-assist game of his MLS career. Ivanschitz has assists on three of Sounders FC s last four goals, now with two goals and four assists in 12 career MLS league appearances. Chad Marshall scored for a second consecutive game, the second time in his MLS career he s scored in backto-back matches (first: June 27-Aug. 1, 2009). Marshall hasn t scored multiple goals in a season since 2012, when he was with Columbus; his single-season league career-high is four goals (2008, 2009). When he scored the first one [on April 10 against Houston] I told him, Let s get five this year, said Schmid. That s the same as when we won the Cup. Oalex Anderson made his first career MLS start, starting in a wide right-sided attacking role and playing 63 minutes. Anderson had come off the substitutes bench in three consecutive matches. We talked about getting behind the defense more, trying to use the speed that Jordan and Oalex provide for us, Schmid said. We wanted to exploit that. We thought they played a high line and we could get behind them it was mainly trying to take advantage of our quality versus the quality they had. Said Anderson: I was scared. I was really scared. But everybody s human at the end of the day, and it s who wants it more. And I plan to go out there and do my best, play to the best of my ability. I ll do the work and do whatever my teammates want me to do. MLS GAME INFORMATION

After an unprecedented start, the Sounders are now unbeaten in three, bringing them up out of the basement of the Western Conference. Last weekend, defender Chad Marshall scored a goal for the second straight match and Jordan Morris picked up his first career MLS goal as the Sounders beat the Philadelphia Union 2-1 at CenturyLink Field. Last season, the Rapids and Sounders met three times in the regular season, with Seattle taking two of three from Colorado. HISTORY WITH SOUNDERS FC In the previous 18 meetings, the Rapids have won on just three occasions. In contrast, the Sounders have triumphed in 13 of the contests, outscoring the Rapids 33 to 19. Two of the Rapids three victories have come at Dick s Sporting Goods Park, though even on home soil, Colorado has more often than not come off second best, losing five of the eight meetings. The Rapids last victory against Seattle came on July 18, 2015 at CenturyLink Field. Kevin Doyle sent a left-footed strike past Perkins, giving the Rapids a 1-0 victory - its first and only win away from home. All-time, the Rapids are against the Sounders at home. The cub s last home victory came on October 5, The Rapids jumped to a 1-0 lead after just 14 seconds and led 4-0 by the break. They would eventually win 5-1. LAST MEETING Seattle Sounders FC 0-1 Colorado Rapids CenturyLink Field; Seattle, WA Saturday, July 18, 2015 Kevin Doyle struck six minutes from time at CenturyLink Field to secure a memorable victory for the Rapids.

16 When the Irishman controlled a lofted pass from Jared Watts and buried a left-footed shot past Troy Perkins, he captured Colorado Rapids first ever victory in Seattle. It also meant Pablo Mastroeni s men had won three successive games - the first time that has happened in the same season since The win was due reward for a gritty display on a difficult, recentlyinstalled, temporary grass pitch. Rapids had the better of the first half but, arguably, Seattle forced keeper Clint Irwin into action more than Perkins. The home side pushed forward after the interval but Mastroeni s men stood strong. The belief from two recent wins was obvious. 10. And, finally, a USA team coached by Sigi Schmid, which included former Rapids players Michael Harrington, Nathan Sturgis (now back at the Sounders) and Marvell Wynne, as well as Seattle stalwart Brad Evans, were the only side to defeat eventual winners Argentina at the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship in the Netherlands. Argentina were captained by Pablo Zabaleta, and subbed-in a certain Lionel Messi at halftime. Sergio Aguero was on the bench. JONES MAKES RAPIDS DEBUT Following a six-game suspension, Rapids midfielder Jermaine Jones made his Rapids debut in the 2-1 win over New York Red Bulls. The U.S. international midfielder went the distance and had a hand in both goals - scoring the first and assisting on the second. TEN THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT SEATTLE 1. Having lost five regular season games in a row to the Sounders, Colorado Rapids created club history on July 18, 2015 when they won 1-0 at CenturyLink Field, courtesy of a Kevin Doylegoal. This was their first MLS win in Seattle in 10 attempts. 2. That win for the Rapids came in the middle of a trying time for the Sounders, during which they went in regular season play. 3. They got back into playoff contention by going over the final eight games of the regular season, to finish fourth in a tight Western Conference, level on points (51) with the two teams below them, LA Galaxy and Sporting KC, but just two points behind the two teams above them, Vancouver and Portland. 4. They defeated LA Galaxy 3-2 in the one-off play-in game, before falling to FC Dallas over two legs (4-2 on aggregate) in the Western Conference semifinals. 5. Matches between Colorado and Seattle have historically been close affairs. Of the 18 previous regular season meetings, two have ended in draws, while 11 others have been decided by a one goal differential. 6. There have been some big wins, notably a 5-1 victory for the Rapids at Dick s Sporting Goods Park, on 10/05/13. Seattle avenged that heavy loss the following season, twice winning 4-1, the second of those results coming on October 5, The Sounders have won on their previous two visits to Dick s Sporting Goods Park (4-1 and 3-1). Indeed, the Rapids have a record against Sigi Schmid s side in Commerce City. 8. There will be familiar faces within both camps this weekend. Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei was teammates with Sam Cronin at Toronto FC. Mekeil Williams is good friends with fellow T&T defender Joevin Jones - they played at W Connection together. Micheal Azira, Marc Burch (pictured above right) and Marco Pappa are all former Seattle players, while Nathan Sturgis and Herculez Gomez once wore burgundy. Gomez has the honor of having scored the first-ever goal at Dick s Sporting Goods Park in 2007, when with the club. 9. Meanwhile, Seattle's second-year pro Cristian Roldan (above left) has family ties with the Rapids. His brother is Cesar Roldan, the club's Assistant Athletic Trainer. KEVIN DOYLE RETURNS Forward Kevin Doyle missed the last four games after receiving a laceration to his left leg while playing for the Republic of Ireland against Switzerland during last month s FIFA window. TIM HOWARD ACQUIRED On March 20, 2016, the Colorado Rapids announced the acquisition of U.S. international goalkeeper Tim Howard from Everton as a Designated Player. Howard will be added to the club s roster upon the opening of the Secondary Transfer Window (July 4), MAXIMUM MINUTES Only two players have played every minute this season for the Rapids - goalkeeper Zac MacMath and midfielder Sam Cronin. Aside from the two mentioned above, Micheal Azira has started all seven games thus far, but was subbed out of 4/2 fixture against Toronto FC with eight minutes remaining. OFFSEASON ARRIVALS The club had a busy offseason/early season, signing 11 new players as the club embarked on a 21st season in Major League Soccer. The players to arrive (so far) are: GK - Chris Froschauer (SuperDraft) *GK - Tim Howard (Everton / ENG) DEF - Eric Miller (Montreal Impact) DEF - Mekeil Williams (Antigua GFC / GUA) MID - Emmanuel Appiah (SuperDraft) MID - Micheal Azira (Seattle Sounders FC) MID - Jermaine Jones (New England Revolution) MID - Marco Pappa (Seattle Sounders FC) MID - Zach Pfeffer (Philadelphia Union) FWD - Conor Doyle (D.C. Enzo Martinez (26 ), Brian Brown (31 ) and Jorge Herrera (70 ) all found the back of the net for the Independence, but late pressure from the Battery provided a nervy final few minutes. Two goals in the last 13 minutes brought Charleston back to within one goal of leveling the tie after 70 minutes of Charlotte controlling the game. Charlotte (2-2-0) handed Charleston (2-1-1) its first defeat of the season, and they will hope to keep that momentum rolling into next Friday s match with the Richmond Kickers (2-0-1).
