3 COLORADO RAPIDS vs CHICAGO FIRE DICK S SPORTING GOODS PARK, Commerce City, Colo. June 18, 2016 (WEEK 15, MLS Game #146) 7 p.m. MT (Altitude; CSN-Chi+) The Colorado Rapids put their long undefeated streak on the line against a Chicago Fire team riding a record road winless run when the clubs meet Saturday evening at Dick s Sporting Goods Park. The Rapids extended their league undefeated run to nine matches, remaining unbeaten in Commerce City this season in their last league match, a 1-1 draw with Philadelphia Union. The Fire hit the road after a two-game undefeated homestand, ending with a 1-1 draw with the Portland Timbers in their last MLS contest, now 30 matches since their last victory away from Toyota Park. The teams met once a season ago, a 1-0 Rapids victory Aug. 22 at Toyota Park their first win ever in Bridgeview. Colorado s last previous road win against Chicago came in 2004, at Soldier Field. The Rapids are unbeaten in their last four home encounters with the Fire, with one win and three draws, including a scoreless draw there in Colorado s 2-0 win in 2012 at Dick s Sporting Goods Park snapped a three-game winless streak in home games vs. the Fire. They had last won in Commerce City in the series in Coaches record: Pablo Mastroeni vs. CHI: P2 W1 L0 D1 Veljko Paunovic vs. COL: first game COLORADO RAPIDS The Colorado Rapids extended their undefeated streak to nine games, reaching a 1-1 draw with Philadelphia Union on May 28 at Dick s Sporting Goods Park. The Rapids are in a tie for first place in the Western Conference with 28 points from 14 games. LAST MATCH The game's goals came in a late flurry, both coming from defensive midfielders. After the Rapids twice rattled the crossbar and saw another apparent goal ruled out, Sam Cronin stepped up and delivered the Rapids the lead in the 87th minute, putting home an angled header from a Marlon Hairston cross beat Andre Blake. But Brian Carroll made a run to the far post on the other end two minutes deep into stoppage time, taking down a pass from Fabian Herbers and beating Zac MacMath with a well-placed shot to tie the game at 1-1. Rapids head coach Pablo Mastroeni made one change to the team that recorded a 1-0 victory against Seattle Sounders FC at CenturyLink Field. Dillon Powers came into the midfield in place of Jermaine Jones. COLORADO RAPIDS ( ): Zac MacMath - Mekeil Williams, Bobby Burling (Jared Watts 65), Axel Sjoberg, Marc Burch - Sam Cronin, Micheal Azira - Dillon Serna (Marlon Hairston 61), Dillon Powers, Luis Solignac - Kevin Doyle. TEAM NEWS The Rapids extended their undefeated streak to nine games with the draw with Union, tying the club record of nine games without loss set June 29-Aug. 17, The draw also ended the Rapids perfect home record this season, following six wins in six games at Dick s Sporting Goods Park to open the year. The Rapids are one of seven teams still without a home loss this season. MLS GAME INFORMATION

4 Unfortunately tonight we just didn t get the three points, said Rapids head coach Pablo Mastroeni. It s either two points lost or one point gained. It feels like two points lost right now because I m emotional. But I think tomorrow, after seeing some of the results it will feel like a point gained. It was a fifth consecutive game where the Rapids scored a single goal, following a stretch of four consecutive games where they hit for multiple goals. The Rapids allowed one goal or fewer for the 13th time in 14 games this season, having allowed as many two goals just once (April 30 vs. Montréal). The Rapids have allowed an average of 0.71 goals per game, the best defensive record in the league. Sam Cronin scored his first goal of the season, his first since last May 30, when he scored vs. Portland. Cronin has scored one league goal in six of his MLS seasons, with a season-high of two (twice: 2013 and 2014). Dillon Powers made his first since April 9, coming into the central attacking midfield role and playing the full 90 minutes. Powers had made four substitute appearances over the previous eight matches, totaling 18 minutes in all. What I talk about is that everyone needs to play, Mastroeni said. There s no guarantees that if those guys were out there that we would ve won the game. You have to prove yourself every week regardless of who s available or who is injured. The Rapids will be without center back Bobby Burling after the break for Copa América, after he underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. He could be out for up to the next month. We have the best defensive record in MLS this season and Bobby has played a major part in achieving that, said Rapids technical director Paul Bravo. We chose to have this surgery at the start of the break for Copa America and we hope to have Bobby fully fit as we push for the playoffs later this season. On Tuesday, the Rapids advanced in the U.S. Open Cup with a 1-0 victory against Colorado Springs Switchbacks of the USL in a fourth-round tie. Dillon Serna scored the game s lone goal in the 84th minute. Here s the Rapids team: Zac MacMath, Mekeil Williams, Axel Sjoberg, Eric Miller, Dennis Castillo, Dillon Serna, Dominique Badji, Marco Pappa (Marlon Hairston 86), Dillon Powers, Sam Cronin, Conor Doyle (Luis Solignac 80). CHICAGO FIRE The Chicago Fire made it two consecutive home games without loss, reaching a 1-1 draw with the Portland Timbers on May 28 at Toyota Park. The Fire are in 10th place in the Eastern Conference with 11 points from 12 games. LAST MATCH The game's goal came in a two-minute span. The Timbers got on the board in the 18th minute when Diego Valeri claimed an unsuccessful clearance by Rodrigo Ramos in the area, then holding the ball up before scoring on a shot taken from a tight angle along the end line. The Fire equalized just two minutes later: Kennedy Igboananike received the ball inside the penalty area and sent a low cross in toward David Accam, where all he had to do was redirect it into the back of the net. Fire manager Veljko Paunovic made three changes to the team that defeated the Houston Dynamo 1-0 at Toyota Park. Joao Meira, Razvan Cocis and David Accam all came into the team, replacing Nick LaBrocca, Michael Stephens and Gilberto. CHICAGO FIRE ( ): Sean Johnson - Rodrigo Ramos (Eric Gehrig 83), Johan Kappelhof, Jonathan Campbell, Brandon Vincent - Joao Meira (Joey Calistri 76) - Matt Polster, Razvan Cocis - Arturo Alvarez (Khaly Thiam 65), Kennedy Igboananike, David Accam. TEAM NEWS The Fire made it two results from their two-game homestand, with the draw against the Timbers following a win against the Houston Dynamo that snapped a six-game winless run. I think it was one of the best performances we ve had this season. Of course, we are getting better and the only thing is that I think you get what you deserve, said Fire head coach Veljko Paunovic. I think we can say we had a great game but you have to win the game so we have to learn to do that. We tried hard, we were close so all we can say now is that we have to keep this spirit and continue to improve and believe. The Fire have scored one goal or fewer in their last 11 games, with seven goals total in that time, since netting three goals in their season-opening 4-3 loss to New York City FC. The Fire have scored 10 goals this season, their 0.83 goals per game the bottom-ranked offensive record in MLS. David Accam scored his third goal this season, his first since netting goals in each of the first two games of the season. Accam was making his second start in the last three games, after going seven games between starts. He played the full 90 minutes for the first time since March 11. Kennedy Igboananike collected his first assist of the season, to go with four goals on the year. It was his first assist since last Sept. 5, when he scored a goal and added an assist vs. Montréal. What we are looking for is to have associations in the team. They are two of them. They work very good together, said Paunovic. We can see that in the first game when David was fit; in the second game also when we had a healthy line of guys on the field, but since then David was injured. He is important, not only because MLS GAME INFORMATION

5 of his individual quality but how he improves our team and how our team improves better on the field and the offense has a little more potential. Said Accam: I'm really impressed with the way we are going, especially the last three games. In the last two games, we started to play the way we want to play, and for me, it's been much better. We conceded one goal in the last two games, and we created more than five clean chances, so for me, it's getting better. Sean Johnson started his third consecutive game in goal, now with a win, a loss and a draw in those three games. He has allowed two goals over the three games. Joao Meira collected his first assist in MLS, playing a second match over the last three in a deep-lying central midfield role. His first five starts had all come on the back line. I think we have a dynamic squad, and the coaches try to use formation depending on the game. You can see this team has used a lot of different formations, and it depends on the opponent we play, but at the moment, we felt more comfortable playing 4-3-3, Accam said. Said midfielder Matt Polster: I think we worked both sides of the ball, we won the ball in good areas, and we found outlets to David Accam and Kennedy Igboananike, and then from there, we tried to counter. I think we have the pace, we have the players, to do so. We did it very well. Easily could have had three points tonight, so that's just unfortunate. On Wednesday, the Fire reached the round-of-16 in the U.S. Open Cup, surviving a penalty shootout with the NASL Indy Eleven at Toyota Park. David Accam the equalizer in the 111th minute after Indy scored the opening goal six minutes earlier to send the match into the shootout; Accam then netted the Fire s fourth penalty in the post-match decider to secure passage into the next round. Here s the Fire team: Matt Lampson, Rodrigo Ramos (Johan Kappelhof 74), Eric Gehrig, Jonathan Campbell, Brandon Vincent, Razvan Cocis, Matt Polster (Nick LaBrocca 46), Khaly Thiam, Arturo Alvarez (Joey Calistri 61), David Accam, Kennedy Igboananike. LAST MEETING Chicago Fire 0-1 Colorado Rapids Toyota Park; Bridgeview, IL Saturday, August 22, 2015 Last summer, the Colorado Rapids collected their first-ever win at Toyota Park with a hard-fought 1-0 victory. The breakthrough came after just 48 seconds when Dillon Serna converted a right-wing cross from Gabriel Torres at the far post. After that Pablo Mastroeni s men had to mount a rearguard action to thwart Chicago Fire. Clint Irwin made a number of fine saves for the Rapids but the keeper may have seen red when he appeared to handle outside the area. Chicago continued to have pressure throughout the second half but Rapids carved out some decent chances for Kevin Doyle and Torres on the break. Chicago substitute Gilberto nudged a shot against the post in added time but Rapids deserved their luck. TEN THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE FIRE 1. (Chicago would enjoy a 5-0 home win over the Rapids the following season as well). 3. Colorado Rapids and Chicago Fire met six times in Unlike the regular season affairs, the two playoff games produced only three goals. Chicago won both (the first by way of the shootout after a 1-1 tie), on their way to lifting MLS Cup at the first time of asking. 4. This will be the 41st regular season meeting between the two teams. The Rapids record is , but at home. 5. Colorado has played seven games against Chicago at Dick s Sporting Goods Park, but have beaten them just twice (2-1-4). 6. The previous showdown at DSG Park ended in a 0-0 draw, on June 4, It remains only the second time that a regular season game between the Rapids and the Fire has ended scoreless. 9. Chicago failed to win a single road game last season ( ), and have again struggled away from home this season (0-3- 2).
