3 CHICAGO FIRE vs NEW YORK CITY FC TOYOTA PARK, Bridgeview, Ill. March 6, 2015 (WEEK 1, MLS Game #3) 1 p.m. CT (CSN-Chi; YES) Two teams looking to pull themselves into the postseason reckoning open the new campaign against each other when the Chicago Fire face New York City FC at Toyota Park to start the 2016 season. The Fire are looking to put an end to a three-game postseason drought, guided by a new head coach in Veljko Paunovic. NYCFC also have a new field boss in their second MLS campaign French international legend Patrick Vieira after finishing in a tie for eighth place in the Eastern Conference in their inaugural MLS season. REFEREE: Armando Villarreal. The Fire claimed a 1-0 win April 24 at Toyota Park; the teams reached a 2-2 draw May 15 at Yankee Stadium. Coaches record: Patrick Vieira vs. CHI: first game Veljko Paunovic vs. NYC: first game CHICAGO FIRE A rebuilt Chicago Fire look to return to the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time in four seasons as they kick off the 2016 campaign. With a new coach in Veljko Paunovic and new general manager in Nelson Rodriguez, the Fire have undergone an offseason makeover after a 2015 campaign when they finished with the fewest points in Major League Soccer in a 10th-place finish in the Eastern Conference. TEAM NEWS The Fire concluded their preseason schedule undefeated, capturing the Simple Invitational tournament in Portland with a 2-0 victory against the host Timbers on Saturday evening. Arturo Alvarez and Gilberto scored for the Fire, who won all three of their preseason matches against MLS competition. Here s the Fire team for the preseason finale: Matt Lampson, Michael Harrington, Johan Kappelhof, Joao Meira (Razvan Cocis 72), Jonathan Campbell, Brandon Vincent, John Goossens (Michael Stephens 81), Matt Polster, Arturo Alvarez (Joey Calistri 72), Kennedy Igboananike (Collin Fernandez 88), Gilberto (Rodrigo Ramos 88) Defensively we did very well. We defended when we needed to defend and we knew how to counter attack and surprise [Portland], said Paunovic. I'm very happy because of the players' [performance]. They did a very good job and did their best. Now, we have to prepare [for NYCFC]. It's great to finish the preseason like this, winning the tournament and defeating Portland, one of the best teams [in the league]. A lot of people think we may play a defensive style, but in the grand scheme that's how we get the ball and then possess, said goalkeeper Matt Lampson. We played with five in the back in the first half and then switched to four in the second half... that was the first time we played with five in the back and we killed it. Joao [Meira], Jonathan [Campbell], Johan [Kappelhof], Brandon Vincent and Michael Harrington played their hearts out. It's easy for me to play when I have guys like that leaving it all on the field. The Fire went on their preseason schedule, including three wins against MLS competition, also defeating Vancouver Whitecaps FC 3-2 during the Simple Invitational. Matt Lampson made the start between the posts in the preseason finale, keeping the clean sheet, after being signed to a contract the previous day. Sean Johnson appeared in two preseason matches, playing 124 minutes, after returning from the U.S. national team s January camp. MLS GAME INFORMATION

4 This week and every week, everyone has to earn his spot and they are working very good and we are very happy with that. We believe that that s the approach that we have to have in order to have all our guys 100 percent for every session and for every game, Paunovic said. The Fire made a second major signing in the days leading up to the season opener, acquiring Dutch midfielder John Goossens, who was last with FC Voluntari in Romania. John s style of play suits our team quite well, Fire GM Nelson Rodriguez said. He is tidy on the ball. He can score from distance, run at the defense and play the final ball. His experience and willingness to serve as a role model to our younger players is an added plus. The Fire lost seven of their last eight games to close out the 2015 MLS season (1-0-7), a stretch which began on Sept. 5. Chicago conceded an average of 2.5 goals per game during that span. Chicago is winless in its last six MLS season openers (0-4-2). The Fire s last opening day win came in 2009, against FC Dallas on the road (3-1). NYCFC ended their inaugural MLS campaign tied for eighth place in the Eastern Conference with 37 points. TEAM NEWS NYCFC completed their preseason with a 2-1 victory against Icelandic side KR Reykjavik on Saturday evening at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. Andrea Pirlo scored the opening goal his first since arriving at the club and Mix Diskerud headed home the late game-winner. Vieira ran out his team in a scheme to start the preseason finale: Josh Saunders Ronald Matarrita, Andoni Iraola, Frederic Brillant, Ethan White Tommy McNamara, Andrea Pirlo, Mix Diskerud Tony Taylor, David Villa, Khiry Shelton. Frank Lampard missed out on the preseason finale after suffering a calf injury during pre-match warmups NYCFC won five of their six matches during the preseason campaign. They played one preseason game vs. an MLS foe a 1-0 win vs. Montréal in mid-february. The lone loss came in a 2-1 defeat by NASL side FC Cincinnati, when Vieira ran out his team in a tactical scheme. We tried to keep our philosophy and we made some mistake, but it's good to make them now, Vieira said. In the preseason, it's all about testing the players in a new system. The preseason finale also saw the introduction of new signing Federico Bravo in a midfield sweeper role as a late substitute. Bravo was one of three high-profile signings by the club in the offseason, along with Costa Rican international Ronald Matarrita and Belgian international Frederic Brillant. Federico is a good passing defensive midfielder who can shield the back four. He s played over 35 first-team games for Boca Juniors in a very competitive league, said NYCFC technical director Claudio Reyna. We re getting a player with good experience that can provide depth and qualities we need. He s also another young player that we ve added to the team during this window. It s been one of the focuses of our offseason recruitment to make sure we added some youthful energy into the squad and with the additions of Ronald [Matarrita], Diego [Martinez], Ethan [White], Jack [Harrison], Mikey [Lopez] and now Federico we have added a good amount of quality under the age of 25. NYCFC finished the 2015 season on a three-game losing streak. Prior to that losing streak, NYCFC had won a season-high tying three consecutive games, which had immediately followed another three-game losing streak. NYCFC recorded just one win in its final eight road games of the season (1-6-1), a stretch which began on July 18, NYCFC s only road win during the span came in Vancouver on Sept. 26 (2-1). New York City FC s Academy completes tournament in Spain New York City FC s Academy played in the 1st Internacional e-soccer Cup Tournament which took place in Madrid, Spain from Feb The Academy played to a 2-2 draw against Real Madrid s Academy team in a friendly match leading up to the tournament. Youth Technical coordinator Rodrigo Marion believed that the match against Real Madrid was great in preparation for the tournament. The Real Madrid friendly was very helpful for the team because we started to believe in ourselves and in what we have been working on up to this point. We gained confidence and from there we took it one game at a time in the tournament. The tournament consisted of shorter games in which we had to play with more urgency while maintaining our style. In the tournament, The Academy did well by winning all three of the group stage matches, scoring 11 goals and conceding none. The New York City FC Academy played the semi-final against Rayo Vallecano and won 1-0. The team reached the final of the tournament, but lost in penalty kicks to Atlético Madrid after a 0-0 draw. Even though the team was the runner up of the tournament, Marion was pleased with the overall team effort. The Club is very proud of the team being a Club that is so new and performing so well against clubs that have over 100 years of history is a great achievement said Marion. As the only American team participating, it should make the entire country proud of achieving so much in an international competition. After this experience, we ve realized how far we have come with youth development in this country. This is a sign that our youth affiliates are doing a tremendous job developing players to the age of 13 in the region. The team also received positive feedback from other coaches who were impressed with the quality of the players and the attractive style of play. After these international experiences, the boys are realizing that their pathway to becoming professional players is getting closer and closer. After playing tournaments in Bolivia and Spain, the Academy is taking some time off from traveling to prepare for their regular season. We are giving the boys a week off after this tournament so they can reflect upon all of their achievements and begin rejuvenated for our regular league, said Marion. We need to prepare them for what comes next one game every weekend and participating in June in the national showcase that includes the best teams from across the country. 3
