3 SPORTING KANSAS CITY vs REAL SALT LAKE CHILDREN S MERCY PARK, Kansas City, Kan. May 21, 2016 (WEEK 12, MLS Game #119) 7:30 p.m. CT (KMCI-38 / SKCTVN; KMYU-12) A Western Conference matchup that has built into a rivalry over the last few years, Sporting Kansas City and Real Salt Lake face off for the second time this season when the clubs meet Saturday evening a Sporting Park. SKC put a stop to their winless run after seven games last weekend, coming back for a 2-1 win against Orlando City SC at Sporting Park. Real have started a five-game road swing with back-to-back shutout defeats, last a 1-0 loss at the Houston Dynamo last Sunday. RSL took a 2-1 win when the clubs met in April at Sporting Park. Justen Glad and Luke Mulholland scored on either side of halftime as Real Salt Lake claimed a 2-1 win April 2 at Children s Mercy Park. The first meeting victory was Real s first ever at Children s Mercy Park, in seven meetings lifetime, including MLS Cup RSL had last won in Kansas City in 2009 (at CommunityAmerica Ballpark). Real have a three-game winning streak alive vs. Sporting, having won the last two league meetings a year ago, both by 2-1 scorelines, and both at Rio Tinto Stadium (June 21 and July 24) their first wins against KC since the 2011 season. RSL haven t lost in five consecutive regular season matches vs. SKC (3-0-2). Coaches record: Peter Vermes vs. RSL: P12 W3 L6 D3 Jeff Cassar vs. KC: P5 W3 L0 D2 LAST MEETING 4/2: KC 1, RSL 2 (Feilhaber Glad 29; Mulholland 79) Real took the lead after 29 minutes when Justen Glad scored his first professional goal, heading home a free kick sent into the goalmouth by Joao Plata. The lead was doubled with 11 minutes when a corner kick was only partially cleared outside the area, and Luke Mulholland curled in a low shot just inside the post. Sporting won a penalty late in stoppage time when Diego Rubio Kostner was hauled down just on the edge of the area and referee Ted Unkel pointed to the spot. Benny Feilhaber converted, but Sporting could not come all the way back. SPORTING KANSAS CITY ( ): Tim Melia - Chance Myers, Nuno Andre Coelho, Kevin Ellis, Amadou Dia - Soni Mustivar - Benny Feilhaber, Jordi Quintilla (Jimmy Medranda 73) - Brad Davis (Diego Rubio 80), Dom Dwyer, Graham Zusi. REAL SALT LAKE ( ): Jeff Attinella - Tony Beltran, Justen Glad, Aaron Maund, Chris Wingert (Demar Phillips 59) - John Stertzer, Sunday Stephen - Jordan Allen, Luke Mulholland, Joao Plata - Yura Movsisyan (Devon Sandoval 70). SPORTING KANSAS CITY Sporting Kansas City put an end to their winless streak after seven matches, coming back for a 2-1 win against Orlando City SC on Sunday afternoon at Children s Mercy Park. Sporting are in a tie for sixth place in the Western Conference with 17 points from 13 games. LAST MATCH Orlando City took the lead in the 67th minute through some good fortune. A corner kick fell into the scrum in front of the SKC goal, and took a deflection off one Sporting defender before nicking off the inside of Jimmy Medranda's leg and just rolling over the line. 4 Sporting finally broke through with the leveler in the 74th minute. Benny Feilhaber lifted a beautiful ball over the top to Jacob Peterson, who headed the ball to a streaking Dom Dwyer, and he coolly finished with a header from the edge of the six. SKC hit for the winner when Peterson followed up with a goal of his own in the 79th minute, heading in a Roger Espinoza cross from the right side. Sporting manager Peter Vermes made three changes to the team that dropped a 1-0 decision to the Colorado Rapids at Dick s Sporting Goods Park. Matt Besler, Benny Feilhaber and Graham Zusi came into the team, in place of Seth Sinovic, Lawrence Olum and the suspended Ike Opara. SPORTING KANSAS CITY ( ): Tim Melia - Saad Abdul-Salaam, Nuno Andre Coelho, Matt Besler, Jimmy Medranda - Soni Mustivar - Roger Espinoza (Paulo Nagamura 90), Benny Feilhaber (Lawrence Olum 86) - Brad Davis (Jacob Peterson 69), Dom Dwyer, Graham Zusi. TEAM NEWS Sporting won for the first time since April 9, snapping a seven-game winless streak, which included five defeats. It was Sporting s longest winless run since a club-record tying 10-game winless streak March 29-June 9, Now I don't have to listen to all these questions about whether or not we are winless in so many games. At the end of the day, the focus should be on how good of a team we are when we play the way we did tonight. We have that in us and when we do, I think it's very tough to play against us, said SKC manager Peter Vermes. Sporting also came from behind to win a game, after conceding the opening goal, for the first time this season. SKC had five losses and one draw after allowing the opening goal this year. We knew we were having some good performances, maybe not all of them, but we were creating some shots and chances. Our possession has been pretty good but we just needed to put it all together, said Jacob Peterson. There is no doubt that a win is going to instill more confidence in the group but I don't think that was lacking. We all understand what we need to do to be the best team we can be and if we do that, as we did tonight, these next two home games will be very important for us to continue this momentum we are on. The opening goal for Sporting was their first following back-to-back attacking shutouts, snapping a goalless string of 314 minutes dating back to May 1, the fourth-longest scoring drought in MLS this season. Sporting was credited with 34 total shots on target, the most in a single game in the club s 21-year history, and the third-most in a single game in MLS history. I think the effort is the No. 1 reason why we were able to come out on top tonight. When we do that, when we play with our DNA of who we are, pressing the game, running forward, going at teams, getting numbers in the box, when we do that we are going to create chances, said Vermes. Sometimes they don't always go in, but when you do that you are going to give yourselves a chance to win. When you don't bring effort, when you don't bring fight to a game, you are not going to win. Tonight we did that. Jacob Peterson scored a goal and added an assist, making just his second appearance of the season, both coming in the last two matches. It was the first time in his MLS career, in 227 league appearances, when Peterson scored a goal and added an assist in the same match. Jake hasn't played a lot of minutes this year, Vermes said. The fact that he comes in here and he holds true to the first value we have as a group that is, the team's first whether he held a grudge or not, he didn't show it on the field. If he did, he displayed in a way and a fashion that's professional. Dom Dwyer scored his fifth goal of the season, his first since April 13. He had gone six games in between without a goal; he had not gone more than seven games without a goal in his MLS career. Saad Abdul-Salaam collected his fourth assist on the season, the Sporting team leader in assists. He was making a sixth start of the season and ninth appearance overall. Among players involved in at least 25 tackles in MLS 2016, Sporting KC s Roger Espinoza has a league-best 85.0 percent success rate. REAL SALT LAKE Real Salt Lake fell to a second consecutive defeat on their long road swing, dropping a 1-0 decision to the Houston Dynamo in a weather-delayed match on Sunday afternoon at BBVA Compass Stadium. Real are in a tie for sixth place in the Western Conference with 17 points from 10 games. LAST MATCH The game, postponed to Sunday afternoon due to inclement weather the day before, finally had its breakthrough in the 65th minute. A punt from Dynamo goalkeeper Joe Willis downfield bounced through a group of players, with Giles Barnes running onto the ball before taking it down and slotting it past RSL 'keeper Jeff Attinella. Willis was credited with two saves in keeping the clean sheet for Houston. RSL head coach Jeff Cassar made four changes to the team that fell 1-0 to the Colorado Rapids at Dick s Sporting Goods Park. Jeff Attinella came in between the posts for Nick Rimando, Chris Wingert started at fullback in place of Demar Phillips, John Stertzer came into the midfield for Sunday Stephen, and Joao Plata started out wide to replace Jordan Allen. MLS GAME INFORMATION

5 TEAM NEWS REAL SALT LAKE ( ): Jeff Attinella - Tony Beltran, Justen Glad, Jamison Olave, Chris Wingert (Jordan Allen 75) - John Stertzer (Luke Mulholland 74), Kyle Beckerman - Javier Morales - Juan Manuel Martinez (Olmes Garcia 82), Yura Movsisyan, Joao Plata. Real continued their five-game road swing with a second consecutive defeat, shut out at the attacking end in both matches. Real have lost three of their last four matches after opening the season with a six-game undefeated run. We just weren t good enough in any of the areas today, when we spoke at half time we said the game would probably come down to just one play, and to be fair that s a goal kick. It comes all the way through, it bounces and puts him in on goal, it shouldn t ever happen, it s not good, said RSL head coach Jeff Cassar. Said goalkeeper Jeff Attinella: We ve got to get results on the road. It s going to be a long month and got to find a way. We ve done it before in the past get back to that formula and we ll be all right. Real were held without a single shot on goal for the fifth time in the club s MLS history, the third time already this season (the first coming April 11 in the first meeting with Sporting KC). RSL s four total attempts at goal were tied for second-fewest in club history. I do think we fatigued, said Cassar. I just didn t think our front four [attackers] were defending the way we typically have been and we weren t good enough on the offensive end to not defend. Jeff Attinella made his second start of the season, his first coming on April 2, in the 2-1 win vs. Sporting KC. Attinella has been on the losing end of five of his last six league starts in goal. I thought he did a very good job, especially dealing with set plays. Our marking on set pieces wasn t good enough tonight but he did a good job commanding his box, said Cassar. Said Attinella: Obviously you want to play games. Jeff told me a few weeks ago that I was going to get this one. Obviously you want to win, but it felt good to be back out there. At the end of the day if you don t win or get a result it really doesn t matter. Joao Plata returned to the starting lineup for the first time since April 16, playing the full 90 minutes in a wide attacking role. Plata had come off the substitutes bench the week before, after missing two matches through injury. John Stertzer made his return to the lineup after a two-match absence, coming into a central midfield role and playing 74 minutes. Chris Wingert also returned after a two-game absence, playing 75 minutes at fullback. I m going to put together a very competitive week and the guys that are winning and working hard, will play, said Cassar. It doesn t matter what their names are. Real Salt Lake s Yura Movsisyan has the lowest winning percentage amongst the 58 total players that have been involved in at least 30 aerials this season (26.7 percent). Sporting KC s Dom Dwyer is tied for third-worst in this category (32.7 percent). Real Salt Lake has conceded a league-high 79 corners this season. Sporting KC has conceded just 43 corners, which is the third-lowest total in the league behind D.C. United (37) and Toronto FC (40). MLS GAME INFORMATION

17 Sporting KC Game Notes May 21, 2016 vs. Real Salt Lake SportingKC.com/Game-Notes #SKCvRSL: HEAD-TO-HEAD Two teams hovering around the red line in the Western Conference go head-to-head Saturday at Children s Mercy Park as part of Major League Soccer s Heineken Rivalry Week. Sporting KC (5-6-2, 17 points) and Real Salt Lake (5-3-2, 17 points) continue a rivalry that reached a boiling point in 2015 when the clubs met four times across all competitions. RSL had the upper hand during the regular season, winning twice at home and securing a 0-0 draw in Kansas City. Sporting KC, however, won a dramatic U.S. Open Cup semifinal at Children s Mercy Park, erasing an early deficit to win 3-1 before lifting the title a month later. Real Salt Lake won the first meeting of 2016, claiming a 2-1 road victory for their first win in Kansas City since RSL had been winless in seven straight trips to Sporting KC, scoring just three times during that stretch, but broke out of the slump with goals on either side of halftime from Homegrown defender Justen Glad and English midfielder Luke Mulholland. Glad s first-half header snapped RSL s 444-minute regular season scoreless streak in KC dating back to 2010 and gave the Claret-and-Cobalt its first-ever win at Children s Mercy Park. Benny Feilhaber opened his 2016 scoring account in the defeat, bagging his third goal in his last four games against RSL in all competitions. Sporting KC has struggled to secure regular season wins against their Utah rival in recent years. Peter Vermes side is winless in five regular season meetings (0-3-2) since the start of 2015, including three straight setbacks by a 2-1 scoreline. However, the road team in this fixture has just two wins in the last 13 meetings across all competitions. The first of which came in July 2013 when Sporting KC topped RSL 2-1 thanks to a 97th-minute header from Ike Opara following a Graham Zusi corner kick. It was the latest goal in the club s regular season history and set the stage for a dramatic 2013 MLS Cup later that year, which Sporting KC won on home soil. The all-time regular season series is tied at 8-8-5, with Kansas City holding a mark at home. #SKCvRSL: Recent Meetings (Series tied in regular season) Date Score Result Details 07/20/2013 KC 2 at RSL 1 W Opara scores in 97, SKC s latest regular season goal ever 12/07/2013* KC 1 vs RSL 1 T SKC wins MLS Cup with 7-6 shootout win after 1-1 draw 04/05/2014 KC 0 vs RSL 0 T Jeff Attinella makes 8 saves for RSL in MLS Cup rematch 04/11/2015 KC 0 vs RSL 0 T RSL has 0 shots on goal; Opara s most recent game 06/21/2015 KC 1 at RSL 2 L Dwyer equalizes in 30 but Olmes Garcia wins it in 92 07/24/2015 KC 1 at RSL 2 L Feilhaber bags beauty but Morales & Plata secure win 08/12/2015** KC 3 vs RSL 1 W SKC advances to Open Cup Final after erasing 1-0 deficit 04/02/2016 KC 1 vs RSL 2 L Glad and Mulholland on target; Feilhaber nets PK *2013 MLS Cup **2015 U.S. Open Cup Semifinals #SKCvRSL: PLAYER HISTORY Sporting KC midfielder Benny Feilhaber has three goals and two assists in his last four appearances against RSL in all competitions. 18 Sporting KC Game Notes May 21, 2016 vs. Real Salt Lake SportingKC.com/Game-Notes LAST TIME OUT: SPORTING KC OUSTS ORLANDO Sporting KC bounced back into the victory column Sunday with a thrilling 2-1 win over Orlando City SC at sold-out Children s Mercy Park. Dom Dwyer s 50th goal for the club in all competitions drew Sporting KC level in the 74th minute, setting the stage for substitute Jacob Peterson to cap his heroic cameo with the match-winner five minutes later. A national television audience on ESPN saw Sporting KC unleash an offensive barrage to the tune of 34 shot attempts, an alltime club record and third most in MLS regular season history. Sunday s result gave Manager Peter Vermes his 100th MLS coaching win (including playoffs) and lifted his side into a tie for sixth place in the West (5-6-2, 17 points). SHOTS FIRED: SPORTING KC MAKES HISTORY For 90 minutes on Sunday, Sporting KC turned Children s Mercy Park into a shooting gallery as a once-stuttering offense burst to life in a gripping 2-1 victory over Orlando City SC. By the end of the afternoon, Peter Vermes men had pulled the trigger 34 times, a new club record and the third-most in an MLS match all-time. Sporting KC put 13 of those attempts on target, tied for thirdmost in KC history and eclipsing the team s total from the previous five matches combined (12). The visiting Lions, meanwhile, mustered just seven total shots and failed to test goalkeeper Tim Melia the entire game. DWYER NETS FIFTY Sporting KC forward Dom Dwyer scored his 50th career goal for Sporting KC across all competitions in Sunday s 2-1 win over Orlando City SC. The Englishman becomes the third player in club history to reach that mark, trailing only Preki (81) and Davy Arnaud (52). Last weekend saw Dwyer notch his 50th Sporting KC goal against the team with which he first caught fire as a professional. The 25-year-old went on loan to then-usl side Orlando City in 2013 with zero goals in Sporting colors. He scored 22 times for for the Lions before returning to Kansas City later that year and continuing his fine form for much of the past three seasons.. SPORTING KANSAS CITY NEWS AND NOTES SUPER-SUB JACOB PETERSON PROVIDES THE ANSWER Sporting KC faced a bleak reality heading into the 69th minute of last Sunday s home game against Orlando City SC. Despite thoroughly dominating proceedings, Sporting KC s first 30 shot attempts had yielded zero goals, a grim scoreless streak had passed 300 minutes and a winless skid was in danger of reaching eight games with Orlando City up 1-0. Enter Jacob Peterson, an 11-year MLS veteran aptly nicknamed The Answer. The do-it-all serviceman had played just 14 minutes all season, but his secondhalf cameo last Sunday could go down as a decisive turning point in Sporting KC s season. Peterson was the catalyst to unlocking Orlando City s defense, assisting Dom Dwyer s goal in the 74th minute before nodding home the game-winner in the 79th. In doing so, he tallied the first multi-goal performance of his 236-game MLS career and more impressively became the first player in Sporting Kansas City history to tally a game-winning goal and an assist after being subbed in past the 60th minute. Jacob Peterson may have stolen the headlines in Sporting KC s 2-1 win over Orlando City SC, but no player turned in a better performance from start to finish than the Honduran midfielder. MLSsoccer.com and ESPNFC took notice, naming Espinoza to their respective Team of the Week squads for Week 11. The following stat line tells you everything you need to know about Espinoza, whose tireless motor propelled Sporting KC to its most dominant showing of the season: A game-winning assist to Peterson in the 79th minute A career-high six chances created during the Opta era A career-high six shot attempts, including two on target Three tackles, three interceptions and three recoveries Successful in 43 of 51 pass attempts Peterson, who entered the match in the 69th minute before assisting Dom Dwyer s equalizer and scoring the match-winner, joined Espinoza among ESPNFC s best XI. He also landed a rather appropriate spot on the Team of the Week bench from MLSsoccer.com and Bleacher Report. ESPNFC added yet a third Sporting KC player to its Team of the Week squad, including Matt Besler in a four-man backline. The captain anchored a defense that limited Orlando City to zero shots on target while contributing four interceptions, three clearances and three recoveries. BESLER JOINS 20,000-MINUTE CLUB In Sunday s 2-1 win over Orlando City SC, captain Matt Besler reached 20,000 minutes played in all competitions during his Sporting KC career. The 2016 season opener saw Coelho score on his MLS debut, firing a 30-yard attempt that skipped across the wet surface and under the mitts of Sounders keeper Stefan Frei in a 1-0 win at Seattle. A native of Penafiel, Portugal, Coelho has played more than 160 matches during a 12-year professional career in Europe, including seven appearances in the UEFA Champions League with Portuguese clubs SC Braga and FC Porto.
