3 SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC vs CHICAGO FIRE CENTURYLINK FIELD, Seattle, Wash. September 28, 2016 (WEEK 30, MLS Game #306) 7:30 p.m. PT (JOEtv / ROOT-NW Alt; CSN-Chi) A critical match for a pair of clubs still below the red line is ahead when Seattle Sounders FC play host to the Chicago Fire on Wednesday evening at CenturyLink Field. Sounders FC gave their playoff hopes a big jump, moving to within three points of the red line in the Western Conference in a 4-2 win against the LA Galaxy last Sunday afternoon. The Fire are holding on to their postseason survival, still sitting at the foot of the Eastern Conference after a 4-1 loss at New York City FC last Friday evening to kick off a three-game road swing. Johnson 92+) This is the only league meeting between the teams this season. The Fire won the lone meeting between the teams a year ago, a 1-0 win July 11 at Toyota Park, their first win ever vs. Sounders FC in 11 matches all-time in all competitions. Seattle won six of the first nine meetings all-time in league play, with three draws, including three victories in a row in the series before the Fire win last year. Sounders FC also won the 2011 U.S. Open Cup Final between the clubs. Coaches record: Brian Schmetzer vs. CHI: first game Veljko Paunovic vs. SEA: first game SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC Seattle Sounders FC won a second consecutive match in impressive fashion, rolling to a 4-2 win against the LA Galaxy on Sunday afternoon at CenturyLink Field. Sounders FC are in seventh place in the Western Conference with 38 points from 29 games. LAST MATCH The Galaxy opened the scoring on 20 minutes, as Robbie Keane latched onto a tremendous cross by Sebastian Lletget and headed over Sounders FC goalkeeper Stefan Frei from eight yards out. But Sounders FC leveled 15 minutes later when a driven corner kick from Andreas Ivanschitz glanced off the head of Galaxy center back Jelle Van Damme and into his own net. Sounders FC broke the game open with three goals in a quarter-hour. The go-ahead goal came in the 63rd minute when Jordna Morris received a pass from Alvaro Fernandez at midfield and blew past Galaxy defender Daniel Steres to run in alone on goal before clinically finishing into the upper left corner of the goal. Morris then netted his second goal 11 minutes later, taking a touch before burying the rebound of a saved Nelson Valdez shot with his left foot. Osvaldo Alonso followed that with a stunning strike into the side netting from all of 25 yards out in the 78th minute after a pass from Nicolas Lodeiro deflected off referee Armando Villarreal. Keane pulled back a goal for the hosts five minutes from full time from the penalty spot after it was ruled that Sounders midfielder Osvaldo Alonso pulled down Steven Gerrard in the box. Sounders FC interim head coach Brian Schmetzer made no change to the team that hit for the game s only goal for a win against Vancouver Whitecaps FC at CenturyLink Field. SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC ( ): Stefan Frei - Tyrone Mears, Roman Torres, Chad Marshall, Joevin Jones (Oniel Fisher 82) - Osvaldo Alonso, Cristian Roldan - Alvaro Fernandez (Herculez Gomez 83), Nicolas Lodeiro, Andreas Ivanschitz (Nelson Haedo Valdez 65) - Jordan Morris. MLS GAME INFORMATION

4 TEAM NEWS Sounders FC won a second consecutive match following a three-game winless run with the victory against the Galaxy, all three of those games away from CenturyLink Field. The four goals were the second-most scored in a game this season by Sounders FC, after their 5-0 defeat of FC Dallas on July 13 in Seattle. It seemed like after LA scored the first goal, my team responded and they were able to find that little extra gear if you want to call it that, said interim head coach Brian Schmetzer. So what might have been to people watching on TV a counter-attacking style of football, what I think it was the mindset of my players just driving past or driving forward at the opportune moments. Because it certainly wasn t the gameplan to bunker and counter. That was not our gameplan. It was a fifth win in nine matches since Schmetzer took over as interim coach of Sounders FC, with only one defeat in that span (2-4 at Portland, Aug. 28). Seattle teams have always been proud teams. They ve always been prideful of winning and having success. And so what I tried to do was to get them to take ownership of the team. I met with all the senior players and said Look, this is your team. You do the hard work so reward yourselves for all the hard work. And I think they bought into that real team philosophy as far as being together and really tight group, Schmetzer said. Schmetzer maintained an unchanged team from the Vancouver match, the third time in his nine games he s kept the same starting XI in consecutive matches. Jordan Morris netted a pair of goals, now with 12 goals for the season, the second-most in a single season by a rookie in MLS history. Morris has scored in consecutive games, with three goals in that span. Jordy is certainly a tremendous player and he showed it tonight so give him all the credit where credit is due, Schmetzer said, but again it s the guys behind him that are feeding him the balls that created some of those chances for him. Said goalkeeper Stefan Frei: You have to keep in mind that this is just a rookie we re talking about. He has a lot of expectations for himself but also a lot of people having high expectations of him... It comes with a lot of pressure and for a young guy it can be difficult to deal with that. He has a great head on his shoulders and he knows that every day he can get better. He still has a lot of room to grow, so I m excited he s a part of my team. Nicolas Lodeiro recorded his eighth assist of the season in the Galaxy win. Lodeiro has a goal and/or assist in each of his last eight matches, dating back to Aug. 7, with three goals and eight assists in that span, playing a part in 11 of Seattle s 18 goals scored over that stretch. Osvaldo Alonso scored his second goal of the season, his first since March 12, the second league game of the season. The two goals are his first in MLS play since the 2012 season; his single-season career-high is three goals, achieved in CHICAGO FIRE The Chicago Fire had their overall winless run extended to three games with a second successive loss on the road, falling 4-1 to New York City FC on Friday evening at Yankee Stadium. The Fire are in 10th place in the Eastern Conference with 27 points from 29 games. LAST MATCH City were up by two goals within the first nine minutes. First, in the eighth minute, center back Jefferson Mena opened his MLS account with a striker's finish, heading home from the center of the goal area off a long diagonal pass from Khiry Shelton off a short corner. Exactly 60 seconds later, David Villa doubled the NYCFC margin, taking a pass from Shelton and slotting home his shot from inside the penalty area. The Fire pulled a goal back in the 35th minute, as Arturo Alvarez's cross was headed in by Luis Solignac. But NYCFC extended their lead again in the 44th minute, as Villa initiated a counterattack following a Fire corner kick, and Steven Mendoza took a pass, made a turn near the top of the box and blasted a curling shot past Fire 'keeper Sean Johnson. Villa notched his second goal of the night in the 83rd minute, taking a pass once again from Shelton and burying a left-footed attempt from distance inside the far post to wrap up the three points. Fire manager Veljko Paunovic made two changes to the team that gained a 2-2 draw with D.C. United at Toyota Park. Rodrigo Ramos came into the back four for Jonathan Campbell, and Michael de Leeuw started in place of David Arshakyan. CHICAGO FIRE ( ): Sean Johnson - Rodrigo Ramos (Jonathan Campbell 58), Johan Kappelhof, Joao Meira, Michael Harrington (Khaly Thiam 84) - Razvan Cocis, Matt Polster - Arturo Alvarez, Michael de Leeuw (David Arshakyan 77), David Accam - Luis Solignac. TEAM NEWS The Fire saw their overall winless run extended to three matches with the loss at NYCFC, their second over that span. MLS GAME INFORMATION

5 The Fire also kicked off a three-game road swing with a second consecutive loss on their travels, both since ending the MLS-record 36-game road winless streak Aug. 20 at Montréal. We have five games left. We just have to make sure that every game we play from now on we have to win, midfielder Arturo Alvarez said. It's been a tough season for us. We have to get better. We have to keep pushing and show people that we can be that team to beat next year. Said Luis Solignac: "At this point it does not matter how we play, we have to get the three points. I am really frustrated, but as they say, we have to keep fighting and get results, because we really need it." The Fire allowed four goals or more in a game for a fourth time this season, tied for most in MLS (also: New England Revolution, Orlando City). The Fire have now conceded 48 goals for the season, an average of 1.66 goals per game, the third-most in the league this year. Defensively, I think we had a really bad game. It s just that this year we are making all of the mistakes that one team can make. That of course is why we are where we are, said Paunovic. And yes, we always say that it s a learning process and everything but you have to learn from the mistake. If you re not learning from your mistakes then something is wrong. That is why we are here to fix that. We will fix it, and we will come back next year. Luis Solignac scored his fifth goal of the season, his first since Aug. 20, when he scored his first goal for the Fire after coming to the club from Colorado via trade. "I am trying to do my best. I train every day to score goals; in my position, that s the most important thing, Solignac said. Hopefully I can score goals to win [games in the future]; it s pointless, this goal, so hopefully next time we can win. Arturo Alvarez collected an assist for a second consecutive game, now with seven assists for the season, a single-season career-high in his 10th MLS season. Alvarez has three goals and four assists over his last eight matches, dating back to Aug. 6. Rodrigo Ramos made his first start since July 31, coming in at right back and playing 58 minutes, having missed the previous eight contests. MLS GAME INFORMATION

When I signed with the USL Sounders in 2002, I never imagined that I would have a professional career that lasted 15 years, and it s been a rare blessing to have played in the same city the entire time. That said, I have much more to offer in this life and I couldn t be more excited to see what s next. The 36-year-old is one of three remaining original players from Sounders FC s expansion season in 2009, and he ranks fifth in club history with 116 career regular-season appearances, starting 91. Scott is the club s all-time leader with 20 games played in Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup play since 2009, while ranking first in club history with 19 starts in the CONCACAF Champions League. Scott attended Gonzaga University from after growing up in Haiku, Hawaii and graduating from Maui High School. Since making his MLS debut on July 31 versus the LA Galaxy, Seattle midfielder Nico Lodeiro has played every minute and has propelled Sounders FC back into the postseason hunt. The 27-year-old Uruguayan international previously played for Argentine power Boca Juniors. On September 1, Lodeiro was named Etihad Airways Player of the Month for the month of August. With new leadership in general manager Nelson Rodriguez and head coach Veljko Paunovic at the helm, the Men in Red made a slew of changes, shoring up the roster with defensive-minded signings Johan Kappelhof and Rodrigo Ramos, and adding exciting young talent Brandon Vincent, Jonathan Campbell and Alex Morrell in the MLS SuperDraft. Rodriguez and Paunovic supplemented the veteran presence of Razvan Cocis and Sean Johnson by adding experienced league players Matt Lampson, Nick LaBrocca and Michael Harrington.
