FOREWORD MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN AND CEO Dear friends, Dr Irvin Khoza Dr Danny Jordaan The final chapters in the 2010 FIFA World Cup story in South Africa have begun. The Final Draw for the 2010 FIFA World Cup on 4 December 2009 will shift the world s focus away from our preparations for the World Cup towards the romance of the tournament itself and the teams that will be playing. Questions about stadium readiness will be replaced by questions about where teams will be basing themselves for the tournament, and their chances in the group matches. The 32 teams that have qualified, and the fans that will follow them to next year s tournament will expect nothing but the best when they step off the plane in South Africa. We, as the Organising Committee, are confident that their expectations will be met on all levels, from the on the field competition, to the stadiums, infrastructure and the hospitality that South Africans will offer them. As we build up to the World Cup, it is imperative that we continue to harness the exuberance of an expectant nation through ongoing engagement and interaction, knowing that this is a World Cup for everyone and we as South Africans, and Africans, have a vested interest in its success. It is a vote of confidence that our President too believes in the magnitude of this event and the unequivocal impact that it will have on the continent. These thoughts are echoed by the greatest footballers that will play here next year and by South Africa s football and non-football fans alike who will stand by with millions of people across the world, to watch the greatest show on earth. Our journey to the World Cup began on 15 May 2004 in Switzerland. On that day FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter announced to the world that FIFA and the football family believed that we could host a successful tournament. Since then South Africa has proved itself worthy of this trust. On 25 November 2007 we hosted the Preliminary Draw in Durban, widely regarded as the best Preliminary Draw of all time. Two years on and we have hosted a successful international tournament in the form of the FIFA Confederations Cup giving the world a taste of what they can expect from South Africa and its fans next year. It is now just a matter of months to go before the new stadiums that stand ready are filled with fans from around the world. We look forward to enjoying these final steps with all of you as we live the story that will permanently be inscribed in South Africa s history. 5 NEWS In Brief UN Secretary General urges Africa to seize its 2010 chance raising the flags... FLASHES... The United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, has strongly urged South Africa s 2010 FIFA World Cup organisers to grab the powerful opportunity to use the tournament to change Africa s image. In a meeting with Dr Danny Jordaan in October, the UN Secretary General said that there is great power in South Africa s hosting Africa s first FIFA World Cup and that it is time to present a different story of the African continent one of peace, democracy and investment. In agreement, Dr Jordaan said: Peace is not just the absence of war. Peace is creating circumstances that create hope. The legacy of this World Cup embarks on changing the circumstances of many people through its social legacy projects, job creation and advancements in telecommunications and infrastructure. Dr Jordaan then invited Secretary General Ban to attend the 2010 FIFA World Cup next year insisting that the Secretary General should not only go where there is war, but where there are reasons to celebrate. The meeting marked an historic week for sport and the UN as all members of the United Nations General Assembly unanimously passed a resolution to endorse next year s event in South Africa as a platform for social development and peace across the African continent. Never before has such a declaration been completely embraced by the UN especially in terms of supporting a single sporting event. More than ever, we are beginning to see the legacy of this event take shape and it is given more impact and impetus to have the endorsement of all the 192 member states of the General Assembly, said Dr Jordaan, who also made a 2010 update presentation to the UN s General Assembly, with emphasis on the legacy benefits of the tournament for the African continent. South Africa s Ambassador to the United Nations, Mr Baso Sangqu, said he was very pleased with the support received for the country s 2010 FIFA World Cup efforts from the United Nations General Assembly. This resolution is the first of its kind and underpins the global support to the commitment of South Africa to not just make this another sporting event, but to ensure that it is based on the agenda for peace, development and stability for Africa in the hope that these benefits will trickle through far beyond the final whistle. This resolution will continue to energise and engage the United Nations to walk this path with South Africa and Africa, said Mr Sangqu. As qualified nations around the world have been celebrating their inclusion in Africa s historic World Cup, the OC respected their achievements in a symbolic flag raising ceremony on the lawns of SAFA House just a day after the last team booked their place for the finals. After each Ambassador and country representative had raised their flag under the magnificent shadow of Soccer City stadium, OC CEO, Dr Danny Jordaan, explained that the ceremony marked the beginning of a significant phase in the lead up to As we raise the flag we must understand that the story line has changed. The stadiums will be ready, we can see this. The World Cup is about the teams, the coaches and the fans now. This storyline has changed from the concrete of the stadiums to the people and the emotion of the World Cup. Today is about celebrating Africa s first World Cup, Jordaan said. Jordaan also held ambassadors accountable for spreading the news of 2010 back in their home countries, saying he expects to see some great numbers in terms of visitors from various countries. You are not only ambassadors for your countries, but now, you are 32 ambassadors of the World Cup. The FIFA World Cup trophy has been touring the world, visiting 86 countries in 225 days before arriving in South Africa ahead of the Final Draw in December On 21 October, the majority of the workers who helped build Soccer City stadium gathered to celebrate the roofwetting of the showpiece 2010 venue 23 October 18 months after he vacated the post, Brazilian Carlos Alberto Parreira returns as Bafana Bafana coach ending after the 2010 FIFA World Cup 4 5

NEWS In Brief CAFU S SPECIAL SOUTH AFRICAN MISSION Marcos Evangelista de Moraes or Cafu as he is known by all in the football world is Brazil s most-capped player ever with 143 international appearances, has won the FIFA World Cup not once but twice, the UEFA Champions League with AC Milan, as well as the Italian Scudetto league title with Milan and AS Roma. And after a highly decorated career he is continuing to use the power of football to reap even greater personal rewards. He has established the Cafu Foundation which raises funds to support education and sport programmes in the favelas of Brazil. Cafu paid OC CEO, Dr Danny Jordaan, a visit recently to discuss ways of supporting similar fundraising projects to help needy kids in South Africa. South Africa and Brazil are very similar. I am here in South Africa to avail myself to do whatever I can to assist South Africa s World Cup efforts and to help to leave a legacy after the World Cup, Cafu said. Cafu intends to canvass for financial support and establish a We love Africa project in his name to support South African social projects. While his first visit to South Africa is a short one, Cafu has been caught up in World Cup fever, and managed a visit to the Soccer City stadium. As a player seeing this magnificent stadium is very emotional, Cafu said as he looked on to the pitch where Africa s first World Cup will kick off 11 June 2010, adding it gives me goose bumps tourism in spotlight Sports tourism is a worldwide money-spinner, estimated to be worth 600 billion dollars a year, attracting high-end spend from millions of sporting fans worldwide. Given the size of this industry, it was little surprise then that, among other international sporting events, the 2010 FIFA World Cup was in the spotlight at the World Travel Market (WTM) in London this year. Dr Danny Jordaan, as a guest speaker at WTM, emphasised to media and delegates from all over the world that South Africa is ready, willing and eager to host the event as well as all the fans and tourists. We are more than ready to host all the fans during the World Cup and hopefully thereafter they will return as tourists without their teams. During the group stages of the tournament teams will never play in the same stadium twice meaning that fans will get to see and experience at least two of South Africa s diverse nine host cities and more if their team progresses. Jordaan also assured the world that all visitors would be welcome. I know you know the one South African who is very warm and hospitable in the person of Nelson Mandela, he said smiling broadly. But come and discover the other 47 million South Africans who are also warm and hospitable. FAN FESTS GO GLOBAL Nine South African cities and seven cities over five continents will be the host to FIFA s official public viewing events for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. 7 SOUTH AFRICAN PRESIDENT INSIGHT Jacob Zuma SOUTH AFRICA HAS ARRIVED With the infrastructure in place and the 32 teams for the 2010 FIFA World Cup known, the CEO of the Organising Committee, Dr Danny Jordaan spoke to the host country s President, Jacob Zuma at the Union Buildings in Tshwane/Pretoria. In this exclusive interview, Jordaan asks the country s leader to give his thoughts on what hosting this historic event means for the people of his country and for the African continent. On the eve of the Final Draw for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in Cape Town, Zuma shares with Ke Nako his welcome message to the 32 teams, his belief in the national side, Bafana Bafana, and his gratitude to FIFA for believing in his country and continent. Dr Jordaan: Thank you Mr President for giving us some time. Outside our headquarters, SAFA House, next to Soccer City stadium, 32 flags are now flying. These are the flags of the 32 countries that will be part of Africa s first FIFA World Cup. It has been a long journey. The qualifications started off with 200 countries who wanted to come. But 27 months and 853 matches later, we now know who will be in South Africa next year. What is your message to those who have qualified and will now come to our country? President Zuma: We welcome them with warm hearts. It has been a long journey, a journey first and foremost to have the World Cup on our continent. When we won the right to host the event it was almost as if we had won the World Cup because it was such a historic event. Having done that, South Africa then said that this World Cup is not just hosted by South Africa, we are hosting it on behalf of the continent. So when we say to the countries that have qualified, Welcome, it is actually Africa welcoming the world to come and play in South Africa. I am sure they will not be disappointed. Qualifying is not a small matter; it is one of the biggest challenges of this tournament. Well you know Mr President, getting to this point all started when we came to your office in You were the Acting President at the time. Yes I remember that very well. We were ready to present our bid to Zurich but one thing which was outstanding was the overall government guarantee. Your lawyers gave us a tough time. I told them, Look, I must have the letter today because tomorrow the bid plus the government guarantee, plus the President s undertaking must be given. Once again we must thank you that you signed just in time for us to rush to Zurich. Looking back on everything that you promised back in 2003 the stadiums, the roads, the airports they have become a reality. How do you feel about our preparations? I think South Africa once again has done something that many were doubting. People felt that South Africa would not do it. I think it has now been acknowledged, not only by the FIFA leadership but I think by 8 9

SOUTH AFRICAN PRESIDENT INSIGHT Jacob Zuma everybody that we have managed to do the preparation within the timelines that were given. I think that indicates something about South Africa and its commitment to succeed in everything that it does. When we signed that letter we knew that when the time came we would be able to do it. At times people forget that we have been able to hold a number of international tournaments, including the Rugby and Cricket World Cups. I think one area where there is still criticism is around Bafana Bafana and their readiness. Bafana Bafana are ready and are going to surprise a lot of people. On 11 July 2010 South Africa will host the World Cup final, but 11 July also marks the day of the arrest of the Rivonia trialists in What do you think that final in South Africa represents in terms of the aspirations, the dreams, the hopes, and the visions of those who were there, the likes of Nelson Mandela, Ahmed Kathrada, Govan Mbeki, Billy Nair, Raymond Mhlaba and Andrew Mlangeni? What does it mean that this is the date we will be hosting the World Cup final? I think it is a very unique coincidence that FIFA decided that on 11 July the final will be played. On 11 July 1963 this country experienced one of the most devastating blows to the This confirms, without any reasonable doubt, that South Africa is now part of the family of nations. struggle. At that time I was doing my ninety days in detention here in Pretoria. I had been arrested in June, but the hope of the country was that no matter what happened, the leadership was there to lead the struggle to victory. So the arrest of the MK (Umkhonto isizwe the military wing of the African National Congress) headquarters was the biggest blow. It looked like there was an eclipse; that the sun had set in the course of the day. It was one of the days that we will never forget. Today, in the democratic South Africa on 11 July 2010 we will make every South African, black and white, across the political divide, the happiest nation, not just on our own, but with the world with us. I think it is a unique occasion for our country. It is absolutely something we need to watch. Those who know our history, they must know this confirms, without any reasonable doubt, that South Africa is now part of the family of nations. It is part of the world. Will this final help to celebrate all of their struggles and sacrifices? Absolutely, I think it is the fulfilment, the completion of the dream, the completion of the journey. As you know our icon calls it the long walk to freedom. I think this says South Africa has arrived. South Africa is today enjoying the fruits of freedom that many people sacrificed for, and that contingent that was arrested in Rivonia on 11 July 1963 was at the head of those sacrifices. They stayed in prison the longest, but they carried this dream that one day South Africa will be a non-racial country, a free country. I am happy you are asking these questions because as a country we must remember where we come from. We must not make light our successes, our victories, what we have done, and who the people are who led us. What is your message to ordinary South Africans who love this game, and who must next year play host. What do you expect from them? To South Africans I would like to say please welcome the visitors who are coming to be with us, handle them with care. If I were to put it in Zulu I would say sibaphathe kahle, that is what we say when we stress that we must handle the visitors with care. Show them love; show them hospitality; be nice to them. They are our friends; all of the people who are going to come here are our friends. Let us show them who we are how proud we are as a nation, and how caring we are. Come in your big numbers to support the teams, but of course when it comes to Bafana Bafana do it extra, do it the South African way. Let us display the Rainbow Nation to the world, let us display that here in the southern tip of Africa where humankind originated from, we can make it a home of everyone. I know you are a Bafana Bafana supporter but if, as you said earlier, this is to be an African World Cup, we want all African teams to do well. With one of the best line-ups of President Zuma, who was a renowned footballer in his day, shows off his skills in the South African Parliament in June while OC CEO Dr Danny Jordaan and FIFA General Secretary Jérôme Valcke look on African teams ever coming here next year Ghana, Côte d Ivoire, Algeria, Cameroon and Nigeria do you think that this will be a tournament for African teams? Today the standard of football in Africa is very high; it has even improved since the last World Cup. I am convinced the World Cup will remain in South Africa at the end, but supposing it did not remain here it must not leave the continent. That is the duty of all six African teams. Mr President, we are country number 19 to host the World Cup in over 100 years of world football history. It was a courageous step in a sense, by some of the FIFA leaders to say it is Africa s turn, and to have agreed with us against all odds, even when so many were talking about Plan B. Now that everything is in place, now that we have justified, and delivered on what you promised in your letter to FIFA, what message would you give them? Well, I think firstly we need to appreciate FIFA s change of mind, firstly to realise that Africa was ready to host this tournament. I think it was a courageous decision to take. I am sure there were sceptics, given the manner in which Africa is usually portrayed in the world, but they were brave enough to take the decision to say that the World Cup must go to Africa. And when South Africa won it, I think they were courageous enough to say South Africa would make it on numerous occasions FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter said South Africa would make it, and I think he has been proven right. I would like to thank them and to say they must keep on taking these decisions. Africa is now a continent that is equal to the task of hosting the World Cup

CAPE TOWN Profile OUR CITY, OUR PRIDE Silubonile Ntseki s contribution to the 2010 effort will live on for his kids to see Warmly referred to as the Mother City, Cape Town s beauty lies in its myriad of natural and man-made attractions, the cultural diversity of its people and a rich history of a peninsula that s said to have been inhabited since BC. With the Final Draw for the 2010 FIFA World Cup heading to this cosmopolitan city, Ke Nako takes a wander through the length and breadth of it including the Flats, Bowl and Burbs to discover the intriguing stories, hopes and 2010 aspirations of eight citizens as they go about their daily lives Giovanni Esposito is proud of his 20 plus years association with Green Point Delia Gamildien (flower seller in the CBD): Thinking outside the box... A flower seller on Cape Town s famous Adderley Street, Gamildien has seen it all in the several decades she has worked in the bustling city centre. Gamildien is not convinced the 2010 FIFA World Cup will directly boost her sales, but she is looking at other ways she can cash in during the tournament. I ve worked here all my life, in fact I was born right here, in a box on the pavement. I m not sure if tourists will buy our flowers because they are often on the move and don t have anywhere to keep them. We do get a lot of foreign people stopping by, but they usually move on after admiring our flowers, especially the proteas (South Africa s national flower). Maybe we will need to come up with creative ways of packaging the flowers, in a country s colours or something, but I am also thinking of putting my house up for rent to try and make some extra money. Silubonile Ntseke (surveyor): The pressure makes this job exciting! The youthful Ntseke s work in the actual building of the Cape Town Stadium will mean that he has something tangible to point to when showing off his involvement in one of South Africa s proudest achievements the hosting of the FIFA World Cup. Delia Gamildien (front right) and her flower seller colleagues brighten up the CBD This is a very big project involving during the tournament as my friends so many people and I am very happy are going to be here I m really to be part of it it s the chance of a hoping that Brazil will be playing in lifetime and something I can one day Cape Town that s my best team. tell my children about; when we go There have been some hiccups and past the stadium I can tell them that I challenges in construction. But for me for one year now and my parents the pressure is what makes this job exciting the whole world is watching, are very proud that I am involved. I ll definitely be coming to watch games so we know we must deliver. Giovanni Esposito (owner of Giovanni s Deliworld): I ve always had faith in Green Point A Green Point local, Esposito has seen the Atlantic seaboard suburb completely metamorphose over the last 25 years. Having had the vision to see the area s potential, Giovanni s business Giovanni s Deliworld, just a stone s throw from the stadium is now perfectly positioned to capitalise on 2010 FIFA World Cup trade

CAPE TOWN Profile Giovanni s has been my baby since we opened back in June I was born-and-bred in Cape Town and always lived in the Green Point area. However, when I opened the deli twenty years ago, Green Point was not exactly one of Cape Town s hot spots in those days Sea Point was a lot more popular, while the Waterfront did not even exist. People thought I was crazy, but I had faith in the area I felt that it was a good location, being situated between Sea Point and the CBD. I m really positive about the whole thing it s great that the stadium has brought further rejuvenation to the area, indeed the whole of Cape Town. Roads and infrastructure are being improved and these things will be left with us after It s a future investment for a more organised Cape Town and something which would not have happened if we were not hosting the World Cup. We are certainly looking forward to a bumper season, although at this stage its hard to predict just how busy we will be we ll have to judge things on the first match. We ve had concerts like Michael Jackson and UB40 at the old Green Point Stadium, but I believe the World Cup will be on a much larger scale, with business consistently busy over a longer period. The dream game for me to watch would be South Africa versus Italy. While my family is from Italy, I m very much proudly South African, so I would have to support one team in each half! Laura Ndukwana (owner of Thuthuka Jazz Cafe): Township businesses will benefit Ndukwana runs township tours, as well as a jazz café at her home in Gugulethu, where her family has lived since In 1998 she opened a jazz café, although in those days it was more of a sports bar, catering for local residents. However, with the boost in township tourism over the last decade, Laura now offers international visitors the chance to take in a meal, mix with locals and enjoy jazz musicians. She ensures that the local community benefits from her business by taking visitors across the road to a community garden project, encouraging them to support this initiative. I have taken the FIFA delegates to places like the Nederburg wine estate and Stellenbosch, and when they found out that I ran a jazz club at my place they said they would be interested in coming out to see it. I think, though, my interest will be more in the bigger picture the tourists. We ve designed brochures and placed these all around Cape Town, the website is up and running and all of that, so we are hoping to cash in. I believe that township business in general should be able to profit from the World Cup. When I started my tour business 11 years ago, there were no craft markets, no guest houses, no upmarket restaurants in the townships in terms of shebeens, people used to sit on beer crates, but people are now upgrading and making their places more upmarket people are gearing up towards and looking forward to Jerome McCarthy (former professional football player): The World Cup can change mindsets Former professional football player for Laura Ndukwana s township tours have the added fillip of a visit to her own jazz cafe Kaizer Chiefs and Santos, and brother coaching and academies, it can only of current South African striker Benni improve the standard of the game McCarthy, Jerome McCarthy still has in this country. close ties with the game through his Local soccer in South Africa has role as a player s agent. Antoine Roelofse (owner of Le Tique Gourmet Terrace and Cocktail Bar): A chance to make a good return on investment Having set up his restaurant in the last year, Antoine hopes the timing of the 2010 FIFA World Cup will be a perfect boost to his fledgling business. Being a new business owner, obviously I have invested a lot of capital, so essentially, I am hoping to do a good part of my return on my investment during the months around the World Cup obviously trade is going to phenomenal, I can t see how anyone can t be excited. The tournament runs in the winter months, Denise Johnson has already noted the benefits from 2010 for wine estates like hers Denise Johnson (director of Zevenwacht Wine Estate in Stellenbosch): South Africa will make a huge success of the World Cup which is normally the quiet time, so Destinations such as wine estates are next year we won t be having an offseason, which is great for business. We are fortunate to be located right on Somerset Road (adjacent to the stadium), so we will be getting an influx of people walking by and dropping in to eat. While of course the tourists will be welcomed, I won t be forgetting about the local community. Because this is such an international event and the world will be focussing on us, I really want to give the best impression I possibly can. I m hoping that countries like Brazil and Spain play in Cape Town teams which I think have a big following. We ll be paying attention to which countries come here so that we can be prepared for the language barrier, in order to give our staff some basic training in Portuguese or Spanish or already firmly entrenched on the tourist map and can only benefit from added 2010 trade. Importantly, a well run FIFA World Cup could help to enhance South Africa s reputation as a destination and ensure increased tourist numbers for years to come. I have recently returned from a wine show in London where there was a tremendous interest in South African wines. I m confident that Zevenwacht and the other brands are all going to benefit substantially from the World Cup. Not only with wine sales, but also in accommodation our bookings for the World Cup are already about 80 per cent full usually we would be looking at around 40 per cent occupancy rates for that time of the year. 16 SOUTH AFRICAN TEAM INSIGHT Steven Pienaar TIME TO SHINE As the home team of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, South Africa s fortunes have constantly been in focus. Here, star midfielder, Steven Pienaar, talks about his impresssions about the team, his home country and his own fortunes. On that note, how have the Bafana players felt about the return of Carlos Alberto Parreira and all the media pressure that came during Joel Santana s reign? For me it doesn t matter who is in charge. I just want to play no matter who coaches us. I gave 100 per cent effort under Stuart Baxter and Joel Santana and there was criticism all the time. But people don t realise the quality we ve played You have also rubbed shoulders with the world s best, has this developd you as a player? For me personally, to rub shoulders with the best was great for my career. It s also improved my life because I have learnt to be disciplined which was key for me. Europe is so different to playing back home. I only focus on soccer now, but in Cape Town (Pienaar played for Ajax Cape Town before against recently. We ve played top, moving to Europe in 2001) I used Steven, you must be bombarded top sides and it s not easy when they to do lots of other things all the with questions from your Everton all play at a very high level for their time. I ve also learnt that recovery teammates and other players in the English League about South Africa They ask me a lot about the crime in South Africa. But I always say we are like any country there is a clubs and we have guys who play week in week out against teams like Free State Stars. It s a different level. We must enjoy the moment and take opportunities... now is the time. is crucial. For instance, if I ask myself: What is tomorrow? OK, I know I must rest lot of crime in England too. Some Santana tried his best, but because tomorrow we train, then people want to make money out of nothing and that s a problem. I tell them the maybe the media was a bit harsh. What lessons have you guys learned that returning coach we play. On the field the big thing for me now is knowing when to slow the game down and when to Owing to his standing in European football, Pienaar was invited to do the draw for the European Zone people here are warm Parreira can harness and help to move forward. 17 SOUTH AFRICAN TEAM INSIGHT Steven Pienaar actually. It s really special having the invite come from FIFA and I ll cherish it always. Talking of draws, have you given much thought to the teams South Africa could be facing in next year s World Cup? And if you could choose who would you like to draw? No, I haven t thought much about this at all. (Laughing) For me, I just hope we don t get a tough South American team. I think the conditions in South Africa will suit them. Who do you see as hot favourites for the tournament and which teams could surprise? I think Ghana and Côte d Ivoire will surprise people and South Africa too. Maybe South Korea will surprise, but Argentina are my favourites! I think with all the negative press they have had, they will use this and add it to their great talent and might just go all the way. What about England, who have had a great qualification run? So many people in South Africa expect England to win this World Cup... England will have huge support here in South Africa, but they will struggle because of the huge expectations and the conditions. Johannesburg is a struggle for teams like England. The altitude is something else For us, altitude is even an issue. But when we get our mentality right and combine this with our team spirit and will to win, then we overcome the altitude. Salvatore Schillaci, who Pienaar earned his nickname from, bemoans his luck in the semifinal of Italia 90 against Argentina who Pienaar tips to win the 2010 tournament What are your memories of the first World Cup you ever watched? It was 1990 Italy. I recall Maradona crying after the final. I was watching as an 8-year-old. [Ed s note: It was after Italy s Salvatore Schillaci s goals that Pienaar got his nickname Schillo or Laci ] Where were you when South Africa was awarded the rights to host the World Cup? I was in the Dominican Republic on holiday. I saw it on CNN, but it was in Spanish so I couldn t understand at first. I then received a message and I knew for sure... I was jumping up and down on the bed and my exgirlfriend thought I was crazy. We d just woken up because of the time difference. As a player in form in the English Premier League, how do you cope with having to play a leadership role to your less experienced teammates? For me, it is okay. I ve been here a long time, almost nine years in Europe, so you learn a lot. I ve been fortunate to be alongside a lot of winners. Guys like Richard Witschge for example. I saw how guys like him talked on the field, being vocal is key. And now I know I must talk a lot. You have to open your mouth and shout. This is part of the game. How have your friends back home adapted to the World Cup coming to South Africa? I know the Westbury soccer community so well. They will all be supporting us. I ve got a few events planned for my home community and I also want to make documentaries of where I come from and my life story. I hope it will help the community in the long run and bring funds for development. How should South Africa harness the World Cup? We must enjoy the moment and take opportunities. People in football must take the chance to shine because now is the time. 28

INTERNATIONAL INSIGHT World Stars The strength of the 2010 FIFA World Cup field arguably the strongest ever assembled will add to the spectacle of the first African FIFA World Cup finals and give fans around the globe the chance to see the very best pit their skills against one another. Here stars from each of FIFA s six confederations look forward to what will be a truly global celebration of football. The Didier Drogba led Cote d Ivoire team are expected to rank among the favourites to emerge victorious in South Africa WE RE COMING! AFRICA African champions Egypt may have bowed out at the very final stage of qualifying in an exciting play-off against Algeria, but many of the socalled big guns from the continent will be at South Africa They don t come much bigger than Cote d Ivoire and Chelsea striker Didier Drogba, who is very much the talisman of The Elephants side, and along with Samuel Eto o of Cameroon is rated among the best strikers in the world. Drogba s Ivorian side has been tipped by many to be Africa s best shot at the 2010 title and the man himself is hoping his side can draw on the experience of their last visit to the finals in Germany It is going to be a challenge. To make it to the final will not be easy because there are great teams like Brazil and Germany, who have won the World Cup for many years, Drogba says. Every team is competitive and it will be a challenge if we play teams like Brazil or Argentina. At the last World Cup we played really well in Germany, but we were unlucky because we were in a very tough group with Argentina and Holland and so went out in the first round. But I think with this kind of experience, it will be possible at South Africa 2010 to do much better. Perhaps we can make the quarterfinals and then semifinals, this is something we can achieve. Drogba says that whatever happens, it is important that Africa shows the world what it is capable of, both on and off the field. My teammates and I want to make history and want to change the way the world sees African football. I hope that we ll be the team that is going to go to the final and win the competition. But let s do everything to show 29

INTERNATIONAL INSIGHT World Stars Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium and are a prime example of how perceptions can be changed when you view something first-hand. We were a bit scared to start with [to visit South Africa], but when we got here it was a really beautiful place and we thoroughly enjoyed it, says striker Shinji Okazaki, set to be one of the stars in The stadium was wonderful it was a great experience ahead of next year and very valuable to us. The fans too playing in front of them was a great atmosphere and overall it was an excellent experience. Asked about his side s chances of causing an upset in 2010, Okazaki Japan, and its players like Shinji Okazaki have had their perceptions of the 2010 FIFA World Cup host country altered for the better is coy. I think we can develop our possibilities if every one of us improves his game, is all he says. Portugal s safe passage to South Africa guarantees fans the sight of Cristiano Ronaldo in 2010 [reach the semifinals], but we have Shane Smeltz (right) joins scorer Ryan Fallon and other teammates in celebrating New Zealand s return to the FIFA World Cup finals after 28 years before, but I have played against can also surprise at the World Cup. people a different Africa. I was in South Africa for the Confederations Cup in June and everything was perfect. The stadiums are good and the people are very friendly. The organisation was superb. And in the stadiums, even if it s a bit chilly, you very quickly forget the winter coolness. The atmosphere is magnificent, people sing together and they re happy and welcoming. ASIA Asian qualifying was intense and for the first time since 1978 there will be no representative from the Middle East at the tournament, with Japan, Korea Republic, Korea DPR and Australia booking their places at the finals. The Japanese have become a force in world football since their excellent showing at the 2002 FIFA World Cup which they co-hosted with Korea Republic, and they have been penciled in as dark horses in the tournament if not to go all the way, then perhaps to cause a few upsets in South Africa. They made a recent visit to the country for a friendly international against South Africa at the new EUROPE European qualifying was thrilling, with the play-offs adding an extra dimension to the preliminary competition. One side who used that route to book their place in South Africa was Portugal, for whom Cristiano Ronaldo is undoubtedly the star man. He is likely to be the centre of attention in South Africa, and says it will be an honour to represent his country on the highest stage, and is hoping for the semifinals at the very least. We have the players to do it to show it on the pitch, Ronaldo says. [Coach] Carlos [Quieroz] is very experienced and he has been a coach of South Africa before, so he knows what the country is all about. Asked which sides he would prefer not to face in South Africa, Ronaldo is emphatic: Brazil! The best teams are Brazil, Argentina, Spain, France it s always the same teams. Ronaldo will be making a first-ever trip to South Africa and says he hopes the country can beat the pressure of playing at home, something he has experienced before. I ve never been to South Africa South Africa twice. They are a good side. They try to play all the time and never change how they want to play the game. They have good players I know very well [Steven] Pienaar, who I faced in the English League. But it s not just him. They have many good, sharp, strong players. They can surprise. It is difficult, but they are playing at home, so motivation will be high. I can give you an example in 2004 [European Championships], Portugal played at home. No-one was talking about us, but we went all the way to the final. Maybe South Africa The Real Madrid man says he has respect for all African players, having played with and against them in Europe. Africa always has good, strong teams with great character. It will be very interesting. I look forward to seeing how they perform at the World Cup, he says. 31 VOLUNTEER PROGRAMME Update service... with a smile Cape Town has prepared to host a Final Draw event like no other, and a team of willing helpers will be ensuring that they do just that. The likes of the Grammy awardwinning Soweto Gospel Choir, Beninoise singer-songwriter Angélique Kidjo and one of South Africa s greatest music exports, Johnny Clegg, will create the buzz with their on-stage performances at the Final Draw for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. However, a 392-strong group of volunteers will be playing their part too with their collective performances albeit behind the scenes. Recruited from hopefuls, the volunteer team represents a cross-section of South African society. Young and old, male and female from all races have come together. Take Fazeela Salie (28) and Quanita Facilitators have been hard at work getting the 392 volunteers ready to assist guests from all over the world at the Final Draw Behardien (26). Work colleagues in their roles as secretaries at the Cape Peninsula of Technology, the pair support rival football teams Manchester United and Liverpool respectively but like so many in the The pride of being able to assist is reward in itself. group they re putting aside any differences to show the world a good time like only Africa, and South Africa, can. The World Cup as a whole is such a big event, says Salie while Behardien adds, and we just had to be part of it even if it means missing some work. A throw away line that may sound like, but sacrifices have become the common theme of the volunteer programme for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. When we first launched, there were fears that we would strugggle to find people to put their hands up, says Onke Mjo, the Organising Committee s volunteer manager. However, the most humbling aspect has been the commitment shown to the programme. We ve been so impressed with the profile of the volunteers; some are working, some are students and some are retired but they ve all shown such enthusiasm, energy and commitment to make sure Fazeela Salie and Quanita Behardien will put competing sporting allegiances aside to work hand in hand at the Final Draw South Africa makes a success of this event, Mjo concludes. In fact, throughout the programme, stories have abounded of individuals catching long-haul buses from one city to another just to attend interviews and others defying illness or disability to help in any way. It just shows, that from a volunteer s perspective, going the extra mile is a non-negotiable. I don t really know what to expect, says 21-year-old communications student Akhona Mahangu about her role in accreditation for the Final Draw, but what I do know is that I m really excited that I ve been chosen to help out just like I was when I received the from my university inviting applications to be a volunteer. That sense of duty is one that 54-year-old Lodewyk De Klerk shares. The pride of being able to assist is reward in itself, De Klerk says, and he Student Akhona Mahungu is looking forward to any unexpected element that may be thrown at her should know, having been involved in tourism all his life. The World Cup provides our country with so many positives that it is very important that everybody who can assist does and you don t necessarily have to be a volunteer to do that. Of course, the fact that all 32 qualified nations will be represented at the Final Draw means there has also been a special need for languages in recruiting this particular group of volunteers and that requirement has been comfortably covered. The diversity of our country has meant we didn t have to look hard to find willing volunteers with the necessary language skills, says Virginia Gabriels, volunteer coordinator in Cape Town. The varied range of national team jerseys worn by the volunteers when Lodewyk De Klerk, with many years in the tourism industry, knows full well the rewards good service to visitors will deliver they convened for training bore witness to that fact. All in all, if there has been one success story of the 2010 FIFA World Cup so far, then it s the volunteer programme. The tales from VIPs, media and visitors who ve encountered their selfless enthusiasm and pro-activeness suggest that and while they may not be the stars of the show, their influence definitely shines bright. VARIED EXPERTISE As has been the case throughout the volunteer programme, the chosen group have been divided into specific functional areas primarily related to their skills set. In terms of the Final Draw these areas are: Accreditation, Administration, IT & T, Language Support, Logistics, Marketing, Media, Protocol, Transport, Volunteer Management and finally Welcome and Information Services

ENTREPENEURS Profiles 2010 INSPIRATION As the 2010 FIFA World Cup fast approaches, more and more South Africans are realising the enormous potential the incoming fans and worldwide publicity will bring. For two artists from different corners of the country, the tournament is providing them with ample inspiration. Daniel Popper is a young artist working and teaching in Cape Town. It was only after graduating from the University of Cape Town s Michaelis School of Fine Art in 2006 that he first began manufacturing his massive artworks. Over the space of two years, working through trial and error, and a few hints from the internet, he slowly began a process that would lead to the enormous puppets he has now completed. When I made my first puppet it was for fun, an experiment. Since then I ve taken various puppets to festivals and gatherings where people kept saying how lots of these would look amazing together on a field, at an event, so I came up with this idea to make giant soccer players for the World Cup, says Popper. These massive puppets stand at over five metres tall, almost big enough to look through a second floor window. The necessarily lightweight frames are manufactured out of a number of materials, from fabric and bamboo, to aluminium and foam. Each one of these giant structures are operated by a single puppeteer who is strapped into a harness below the puppet. Included in the puppet s intricate design is a lighting system, which allows the giant art-forms to shine at night, changing their appearance and making their already incredible presence even more commanding. Popper feels that these puppets offer something special to the audience watching them. The attraction is that they are giant; it is always eye catching to see something this big. While a lot of entertainment today is static and boring, these puppets move, they dance, and because of this they really capture people s imagination. They take people out of their environment for a moment, and they start to relax because the puppet reminds them that they are out to have fun, says Popper. Since last year, Popper s aspirations for the tournament have grown and he has been encouraged by the response to his prototypes. It would be amazing if they could be all over the place, he said, obviously excited Karabo Maseku s paintings of Soccer City is the start of the budding artist s programme to paint all ten venues that will be in use for the 2010 FIFA World Cup for the influx of expected visitors next year, many of whom will get to witness his puppets in action on the streets of Cape Town and other cities around South Africa. Now running his own business, Popper credits the arrival of the 2010 FIFA World Cup for playing a big part in inspiring him to become an entrepreneur: I think that there are opportunities for everybody, but for creative people especially. For a lot of the artists in the country now is a chance for them to put their work out there for the rest of the world to see. This is history and we as artists can record that. His advice for other people looking to start up their own businesses ahead of the tournament next year? Just go for it, don t be afraid to do it. It is tough but the opportunities are there, just be properly prepared. Karabo Maseku is another shining example of a South African who has been inspired by the FIFA World Cup. Drawing inspiration from the preparations for 2010, Maseku, who hails from Johannesburg, is hard at work painting the stadiums This is history and we as artists can record that. that will soon host 32 of the world s best teams. I just look at what is happening in South Africa and an idea comes to me. I paint what happens around me, said Maseku. As if to make a point Maseku turns his head to what will soon become one of the most recognised stadiums in the world Soccer City. In awe of the sheer size of it, he exclaims: It is such a beautiful stadium and the people have been working so hard on it. I want people to know about the workers that are making this stadium. And the 29-year-old artist is doing just that. Together with his friend and Soccer City stadium construction worker, Doctor Legodi, the artists have begun to paint the story of the workers of Soccer City. He hopes it will be a source of inspiration for South Africans as well as a reminder of the work being put into making 2010 a global success. I want them (construction workers) to be remembered and recognised, said Maseku who has already begun painting the Green Point and Nelson Mandela Bay stadiums with Legodi. For Maseku 2010 is a great opportunity for many South Africans is big time important. It will benefit many people like me as an artist. Firstly there will be tourists to sell my work too; we will have lots of business. Secondly, I will have great inspiration to paint during the World Cup. As an artist Maseku is looking forward to the vibrant and colourful subject matter during the 2010 FIFA World Cup but he is also confident that the many visitors expected for the tournament will get to meet the true South Africa. We are going to give them smiles and love when they arrive for They will definitely see our true colours

OC LEGACY PROGRAMME Update MORE THAN JUST A GAME For the 2010 FIFA World Cup Organising Committee (OC), the legacy of the 2010 tournament must speak to the very heart of football in South Africa, and acknowledge that for many communities around the country, it is more than just a game. Every day, hundreds of young excited football players cluster around football pitches made of cow dung and dust. You have to be tough to play on one of these fields, tougher to play without shoes and the toughest of them all to carry on playing when you fall. You can get hurt very badly, says football player Mduso Dlamini. I hurt my knee, they wanted to send me to hospital but I said no. It s hard to play [on this ground] but I m used to it. Of course, grass will be better. Dlamini plays in the Under-15 league in the Umzimkhulu District in Kwa-Zulu Natal. His team is one of up to 60 teams that play weekly on the makeshift football fields on the uneven rocky grounds of the Umzimkhulu College, which nestles in the majestic foothills of the When it comes to football, you re never too young or too poor to love the game all you need is a ball and some friends Drakensberg mountains. It is here that the OC plans to build an artificial football pitch which will transform Dlamini and his team s football experience forever. A new pitch will have a great impact because some of the good teams around Kwa-Zulu-Natal will be able to play here, like Maritzburg United. We cannot afford to travel to them, and [currently] they won t visit us because of our fields, says local coach Thozamile Luganyeni. Quality pitches will go a long way in producing quality football and returning to the game and its players the dignity that it deserves after years of neglect. With better facilities available throughout the year, the game will grow, producing an institution of worth and value to the communities that surround it. This social interdependency with the game gives more people a vested interest in its success, ultimately working towards integrated development for coaches, players and supporters. As Luganyeni says, Football means a lot to this community. It is the life of the community. It is the only sports club that we have. Umzimkhulu is not the only district which is set to benefit from the World Cup. The OC plans to build 52 football turfs in South Africa one in each SAFA region at a cost of some R4.2 million per site. These sites will have a rural bias, and also look at schools and areas that have some existing infrastructure. For now, nine sites one in each province have been identified for development with partial funding (R3 million per site) already secured from the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund. Further funding is being sought so that one of the most tangible legacies of the FIFA World Cup can be felt in all areas of the country. Along with the artificial pitches and fund dependent, there are plans to develop club houses with dressing rooms, a management office and space for community gatherings and lectures and even a computer centre. The legacy of this project is to develop a space where football is a catalyst for community growth through ownership and participation at all levels. Part of the big dream would be for football legends and positive role models to partner with the club, and assist with the training of the younger teams, and for projects such as 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa Youth Zone: Legacy Network to be integrated. The Youth Zone: Legacy Network is a partnership between the Foundation for a Safe South Africa (FSSA) and the OC that has recently received funding of R6 million from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to implement a programme designed to get the youth connected. Football means a lot to this community. It is the life of the community. The philosophy of the programme is to prevent the youth from turning to crime through isolation and boredom by not only developing their football game, but teaching them life and computer skills. These programmes are supplemented by activities chosen by the community themselves like netball, community policing or language interventions. Everything we do here is about relationships, says Schalk van Heerden Project Co-Ordinator FSSA who explains that such an intervention can only be sustained through understanding a community s needs and partnering with them in the interest of having a positive impact. It must be organic and grow like a tree by starting small and seeing how things develop. So with football, you have education and skills development. For players like Dlamini, and many others who share football boots, kit and practice with balls made out of plastic, the legacy is the beautiful game that promises to go on a long time after the world s greatest team is crowned world champions at Africa s first World Cup. Through the OC legacy initiative, barren football fields will soon be green all year round 58 59

NEIGHBOURING COUNTRIES Profiles HELLO NEIGHBOUR Lofty mountain peaks, waterfalls, pony trekking and unusual wildlife that s what you ll find if you visit Lesotho and Swaziland. Both are rugged and beautiful, both offer unique adventures and experiences for lovers of the great outdoors. LESOTHO Completely surrounded by South Africa, Lesotho is a tiny mountain kingdom with a lot to offer those who love dramatic landscapes. The towering snow-strewn Maluti mountains dominate the scenery in winter, transforming Lesotho into a white wonderland that reaches 3 000m into the sky. Summers are warmer, but with all of Lesotho above 1 400m, the weather is generally moderate. In brief Lying within eastern South Africa, along the mighty Drakensberg, Lesotho is just km² in size and has a total population of 2.2 million people ruled by King Letsie III. The Kingdom of Lesotho was first populated by the earliest inhabitants of southern Africa, the hunter-gatherer Khoisan The view from Sani Pass into the kingdom of Lesotho highlights the dramatic landscape of the tiny country completely landlocked by South Africa people, and much of their delicate rock art can still be seen in river valleys. The Basotho people now inhabit Lesotho, which means land of the people who speak SeSotho. English is also an official language. Places of interest The capital, Maseru, is slow paced and friendly, but if you can get to the top of Sani Pass by 4x4 you can enjoy a drink at the highest pub in Africa. Traditional pony trekking from Malealea allows you to explore the vast countryside, and hiking is also excellent. Sehlabathebe National Park is remote and rugged, and there is good birdlife there. The Maletsunyane Falls are best in summer, but the craft centre at Ty is worth a visit for traditional keepsakes. WEATHER Winters are cold and dry, with snow (June-August) and summers are warm and rainy (October- April). The weather is highly changeable in the mountains, as temperatures can range from 30º C in the lowlands to -17º C in the highlands.
