Define football problem. Main moment: BP (also BPO BP). Key principle: Effective possession (. Structured build-up). Ws: what is the problem? Loss of possession from GK who are the key players? GK and backs (#+ and #+) where on the field is the problem occurring? Around own penalty box when is the problem occurring? When GK in possession/receives why is the problem occurring (what is the cause)? Poor positioning by backs to support GK Session objective In this session I aim to improve the positioning of the backs to allow controlled build-up from the GK when playing against three strikers. I will do this by focussing on improving the positioning of the backs for the first pass from the GK. Key concepts -on- s: players must understand (perception/recognition) which -on-s they participate in, and how to stretch a -on- positioning: open (in an open passing lane) and beyond (receive beyond opponent(s)), blind-side (start where an opponent cannot track your initial movement/run) pressure/time on the ball: cue (perception) for movement/positional adjustment and/or change of role

Warm-up (passing practice) Set-up shown in Figure Figure : Passing practice: exploiting -on- s. Initial set-up use two fields with one player at each end for players (two turns at each line); one field with pairs at ends for 9+ players (advance in pairs) for fewer than players: replace end neutral with small gates/goals: / must dribble through gate in touches one player/pair at near end (right) and one at far end (left) one pair near each central marker (leave wide markers initially) remaining players in pairs behind pair at near end balls at starting (right) end Basic rules players pass from one end (right) to the other avoiding the markers/poles (defenders) player(s) at the end dribbles back around outside to start players (one or in pairs) move forward to the next line in each cycle (i.e., spend two turns in each line/half) Additional structure all players must touch ball pairs start at markers (defender) and check away to receive in space dynamics on way back replace markers by defenders: #9-0-+; no tacking/light screening limited touches

add #+ line on sidelines near half way (third line) Coaching points players make opposite runs (e.g., cross-over) at markers; i.e., stretch -on- s: one leads and other responds (perception + decision) cues to time runs: e.g., on first touch, as ball travels, etc. (perception + decision) scan for target (channels) and glance for opponents (perception) (as ball travels) technique (posture + ball placement): first-touch facing target ( play target in two ) and in direction of target (execution) increase speed: player movement, transfer speed, and ball speed (execution) Positioning game See set-up in Figure Figure : Positioning game: focus: positioning of # & #. Initial set-up one neutral on each side (#+) and one at each end (#+0) four yellows and four reds inside field Basic game rules possession: yellow vs red, can use neutrals (blue)

Additional structure end to end: teams get one point if they get the ball from their end neutral (#) to the opposite end neutral (#0); ball must start at their end defending team must retreat behind half way before advancing/touching ball neutral neutral pass not allowed scoring pass/player has limited touches reds must have diamond shape (and/or must have one player in each half at all times); yellows (focus team) block #+ cannot cross half way line (or, only if they receive on st touch beyond #/) defending team doesn t have to start at own end if they win ball above half-way (pressing high) #+ can take one (st) touch inside provided it is outside #/ Script Team task: get the ball to the other end in control Player tasks: GK: #+: #+: #+: play short to #+, if possible support #+ to switch point of attack, if necessary when GK gets ball, stretch -on- on opp. #9 (only as wide and deep as required to play forward in two) when GK gets ball, stretch -on- on opp. # and #, respectively: outside and (just) beyond them ( furthest shoulder ), adjust height in proportion to #/ s time on ball look to receive where you can play to end target in touches double team (-on-) opp. #0

Game training The layout/set-up is shown in Figure. 9 0 Figure : Game training: BP playing out from the GK. Basic game rules reds score against yellow GK yellow must advance the ball beyond (+ m) line in controlled possession Additional structure reds have a shot clock (0 sec.) reset/restart method: coach serves; occasionally coach serve to reds to keep yellow honest yellows must dribble through gates to score yellows can pass to neutrals to score with restrictions: two touch pass (in wide areas) only if #/ beyond opp. winger (in central areas) only if #/ advance beyond opp. #9 (or m line) reds must retreat beyond m line after losing ball, before advancing again (restore shape)

yellow must begin from GK/penalty box/gk or # or # wide players (#+) can only score in wide areas, and central players (#+) in central areas (or centre circle) wide players must receive outside opp. winger red team gets pt per penalty box penetration, and pt per goal (e.g., goal from inside penalty box = pt) move yellow s end (scoring) line up or down add accountability on individual contests: e.g., red # vs yellow #, etc., with penalties if direct opponent scores + add red #+ and yellow #0 Script Team tasks: Y: advance the ball into mid-field (represented by advancing the ball beyond the line) in controlled possession (short passes) R: prevent yellow from getting out, and counter-attack quickly (early shot on goal) Player tasks: GK: #+: #+: #+: ball. play short to #+ first, if possible support #+ to switch the point of attack, if required coach backs (perception + communication) always be first option for GK to play short when GK gets ball, stretch -on- on opp. #9 (only as wide and deep as required to play forward on first touch) advance/drive into mid-field (past #9), if opp. #9 out of position in which case, engage/commit opp. winger or mid-fielder (-on-) (perception) play forward or switch point of attack? (cue) if opp. #9 slides across to make it, switch point of attack (perception + decision), otherwise advance (pass or drive) into midfield (beyond opp. #9) when GK gets ball, stretch -on- on # and #, respectively, beside (outside) and (just) beyond them support/protect #/ when they have the ball: (cue) if no pressure on #/, position yourself open and beyond, otherwise, support goal-side (anticipate loss of possession) start high to create space for backs (esp. #+) Provide protection in case the ball is lost; adjust height in proportion to #/ s time on

stretch -on- on opp. #0 ( double team opp. #0 ) make opposite runs on opp. #0 to create space for one of you to receive from #/, or to open forward passing lanes position yourself open and beyond opp. #0, if #/ has time on the ball (i.e., create -on- on opp. #0), otherwise at least one must support goal-side (protection) Training game Set-up shown in Figure Figure : BP playing out from the GK training game. full width yellow vs red with yellow #0 and red #+ added (+GK vs +GK) yellow must start from the back (GK/#/ or penalty box) add second goal beyond centre circle; shoot/cross (limited touches) after crossing half-way; area beyond first line out of bounds for reds (or, only in under-load)
