KAFC Player Pathway
KAFC Player Development The ability to develop/teach = knowing what to value, why to value it, when to value it and how to best instill that value in a player. Value: Dribbling a ball Why: Allows the player to manipulate the ball while varying speeds and direction When: From the beginning stages with little to no pressure and increasing pressure as the player builds competence How: Provide a training environment that builds confidence, provides success, understands that failure is an opportunity to learn and reinforces the value through encouragement.
KAFC Player Development The 4 Corner Model The 4 Corner model for player development outlines the range of influencing factors which may need to be addressed if a young player is to reach their full potential. As the development pathway for each individual is unique and diverse, the needs of each player will ebb and flow in all of the 4 corners. For some players the need for added support will be minimal, whilst others may require more applied and specific support. It is important to understand that each of the corners is connected, and relies on support from the other three.
KAFC Player Development Passing & Receiving Dribbling & Turning Shooting & Tackling Heading & Juggling Understanding of position within the team Understanding of team formation Understanding of team game plan Ability to make Speed Strength Stamina Agility Enjoyment of training/game environment Self-Confidence Self-Motivation Lifestyle Considerations
KAFC Player Development U4 U8: Introduction to the sport. Emphasis on a fun environment to encourage kids to fall in love with the game. U9 U12: Major focus on improving technical skills at this age. 7v7 and 9v9 play. U13 U14: Introduction to 11v11 tactical concepts. Higher physical demands. U15 U18: Primary focus is on tactical and physical work.
KAFC Player & Coach Expectations Commitment Work Ethic Mentality/Attitude Preparedness Mentality/Attitude Individual Commitment - Commitment to Team Willingness and commitment to better one's self and team and maximize every opportunity for improvement. Can do attitude and positive mindset individually and towards the team. Mentally and Physically prepared at Training and Games Willingness to be corrected without pushback and then use of that knowledge to improve
Progress is a Process Soccer America: What is it that needs to be improved at the grassroots? BRAD FRIEDEL: It s the technique, the technique, the technique, the technique I ve been to so many states here and all the parents are so concerned about is winning, winning, winning. Winning is irrelevant when you re 11 or 12 years old. It really is it. If you do win by playing the right way and you implement what you do in practice, that s great, it s a good team thing. But I don t take much notice at certain age groups and certain tournaments with wins and losses. At youth tournaments, I look at the technical ability of the players. Whether the team wins or loses -- I don t care. The scouts from Europe, they don t care either. Some of the best systems -- you go into Holland, various parts of France. Germany. Certain clubs in England -- we re [Tottenham] one of them right now, the way they run youth modules are exceptional and they do not emphasize winning. Brad Friedel Played 82 games for the United States national team between 1992 and 2005, and at three FIFA World Cup tournaments. He is the current holder of the English Premier League record for most consecutive appearances with 310
Progress is a Process DENNIS BERGKAMP: Sometimes you put your strongest player on the bench just to let others shine. Or you put a right-footed player who can't do anything with his left on the left side and force him to use his left foot. Of course in that game you will probably lose because you don't use your strongest players in their strongest position, but in the end you have a player who used his left foot when he was 12 and 13 and 14, and he can use both feet when he comes into the first team. That's what we have at Ajax and I really stand behind that. Dennis Bergkamp Widely regarded as one of the greatest players in his generation, Bergkamp finished third twice in the FIFA World Player of the Year award and was selected by Pelé as one of the FIFA 100 greatest living players.
