Have You Written Your Thank You Letter? Contact Us All members who participated in the Large or Small Animal Sale and Still Life Sale are responsible for writing a letter of appreciation to the buyers of their animal and project. Please be sure you have done that. It is, of course, the courteous thing to do for your specific sale. But, also, some buyers who feel they have not been appreciated may not want to participate as a buyer in the future, so this can have an impact for the future of the sales! If your thank you note has slipped your mind, DO IT NOW! Buyers really appreciate that note of thanks, hand written by the member. 5 Ingham County 4-H members earn high ranking junior awards at Michigan 4-H Youth Dairy Days EAST LANSING, Mich. Ingham County youth Irene Nielsen and Keagan Long were recognized as the highest point individuals in the junior division of this year s Michigan 4-H Youth Dairy Days. Held in conjunction with Michigan Dairy Expo, the event took place July 16-20, at the Michigan State University (MSU) Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education in East Lansing. As the youth-centered portion of the Michigan Dairy Expo, the largest annual dairy event in the state, Michigan 4-H Youth Dairy Days is a program of MSU Extension. It offers young people interested in the dairy industry opportunities to compete for premiums, ribbons and scholarships in various educational activities, including dairy quiz bowls, dairy management contests, dairy cattle judging competitions and the Dairy Days youth show. This year, nearly 175 youth from around the state participated in one or more of the educational competitions, and winners may go on to represent Michigan in national competitions. Fourteen year-old Michigan 4-H member Irene Nielsen, of Potterville, received the Overall Dairy Youth Dairy Days High Rank Award in the junior division and earned a $1,000 cash prize. The Overall Dairy Youth Dairy Days High Rank Award is awarded to the participant who accumulates the highest total rankings in three of four contest categories: dairy cattle judging (conformation placings and oral reasons), dairy management, quiz bowl and showmanship. The junior division is open to youth ages 9 to 14. Fourteen year-old Keagan Long, of Lansing, was named the Reserve Overall Dairy Youth Dairy Days High Rank Award winner in the junior division and received a $750 cash prize. Participants may win the high rank award only once in the junior division and once in the senior division (ages 15-19). Melissa Elischer, MSU Extension Michigan 4-H dairy youth educator and director of 4-H Youth Dairy Days, said that the weeklong educational event serves as the stage for showcasing some of the industry s most talented and engaged young people and young dairy industry leaders. She said youth must learn a number of skills and knowledge in the weeks and months leading up to the event. It requires a lot of commitment on the part of young people to prepare for Dairy Days, said Elischer. These youth spend many hours learning and practicing with their teams and coaches to prepare for Dairy Days. Once here, youth then have to budget and prioritize their time to compete in back-to-back contests, often while being responsible for taking care of their show animals in the barn. Awards and other recognition during Michigan 4-H Youth Dairy Days, along with other dairy youth and judging program activities conducted throughout the year, are made possible through the generous support of numerous businesses, organizations and individuals. These include: ABS Global, AIS Equipment, the Branch County Dairy Organization, the Clinton County 4-H Dairy Council, Dairy Farmers of America, Dairyland Laboratories Inc., the District I and District VI Holstein Associations, Drs. Joe and Denise Domecq, GreenStone Farm Credit Services, Hillsdale County Dairy Leaders, Ira Krupp, the Michigan Dairy Memorial Foundation, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Michigan Farm Bureau, the Michigan Holstein Association, the Michigan Jersey Cattle Club, the Michigan Milk Producers Association, the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, the MSU Dairy Club, the MSU Dairy Cattle Judging Team, the MSU Department of Animal Science, MSU Extension, MOO-ville Creamery, NorthStar Cooperative, the Osceola County 4-H Dairy Boosters, the Ottawa County 4-H Dairy Committee, the Place Family, Rodney Pennock, the Shiawassee County 4-H Dairy Association, the United Dairy Industry of Michigan, and the Vitality Dairy crew. The 2019 Michigan Dairy Expo is scheduled for July at MSU. 5 Dairy Management Contest Results Congratulations to Irene Nielsen for placing 7 th overall in the Junior Division of the state Dairy Management contest. The dairy management contest is a practical, hands-on competition that tests contestants' dairy knowledge. Youth rotate through a series of stations representing a variety of dairy management-related topics. At each station, contestants may be asked to perform tasks, identify common tools, feeds and other items used on dairy farms, write an answer on a card, or deliver an answer orally to a judge.
