1 August 2004 Upcoming Events Mather, Monday August 16 ( 9:00 A start) still taking entries for this event, our only event at Mather in 2004, and this is consistently becoming one of the best public courses in the area. Feel free to contact us if you and/or friends would like to play this day. Mare Island, Saturday August 28 (9:30 A start) we re interested in the interest, turnout and comments about this course this might a great beat the heat course to put on our schedule every couple of years. A fun course that we think members (and guests) would enjoy. The weekend before Labor Day weekend hope you can join us! What a busy couple of months we saw in June and July, with 6 CGC events (including our Monterey trip). The rest of the year still has 6 more events between now and the first weekend in November so there are still many more chances to get out before the end of the year. Let s look at the results from June and July. Results from DarkHorse, June 5, 2004 What a glorious late Spring day we had to play golf! This golf course is in a lovely setting, and while scores were not low generally, most of the 21 CGC players came away feeling that better scores could be had with a little more course knowledge. Definitely a course we would recommend for a local getaway and if the prices stay fairly reasonable, we could see the CGC returning in the future. If we do, one item we will likely try a scoreboard feature on the electronic screen in the carts that let s everyone know where they stand in their flight throughout the round. Hopefully, no highlights (or lowlights) on Sportscenter!! First Flight (handicaps 10-20) Low Net: Marty Solov, 72 $ 20 GC 2 nd Low Net: Craig Wahlquist, 74 $ 15 Low Putts: Marty Solov, 34 * $ 10 GC Closest to the Pin: Jack Dever, 26 6 $ 10 GC, $ 10 cash carryover from Woodcreek Alan Rankin $ 12; Terry Barr $ 6; Jack Dever $ 6; Jim Finnegan $ 3. A day that turned warm, but not hot and with Ancil Hoffman in very good shape left us with a golfing day that was definitely better than working! First Flight (handicaps 14-18) Low Net: Alan Rankin (CGC/USGS), 69 * $ 20 2 nd Low Net: Ken Bryant (guest), 69 $ 10 Low Putts: Vince Avila (CGC), 24 $ 10 Closest to the Pin: Danny Olaivar (CGC), 20 0 $ 10 Danny Olaivar (CGC) $ 12; Alan Rankin (CGC/USGS) $ 12; Brian Rentschler (guest) $ 6. Long Drive: Gary Borge (CGC) $ 10 Closest to the Pin (17 th Hole): Jim Greco (CGC), 5 6 $ 10 Results from Cherry Island, June 26, 2004 Cherry Island is one of those courses that you watch change from year to year, as new trees grow and old trees die. The course remains one of those where good scores can be had, but trouble seems to lurk everywhere for the faint of heart. We were able to get an early start this day, and by the end of the round we were thankful, as one of the warmer days so far in 2004 hit the Sacramento Valley. A pleasing turnout of 26 CGC members joined us for our last local weekend event until late August (and if Vallejo isn t truly local, then until the first weekend in October at Plumas Lake in Marysville). First Flight (handicaps 13-20) Low Net: Terry Barr, 63 $ 20 2 nd Low Net: Vince Avila, 64 $ 15 3 rd Low Net: Alan Rankin, 76 $ 10 Low Putts: Terry Barr, 31 $ 10 Closest to the Pin: Vince Avila, 14 1 $ 10 Terry Barr $ 15; Vince Avila $ 10; Alan Rankin $ 5; Craig Wahlquist $ 5. Men s Long Drive: Pete Smith $ 10 Women s Long Drive: Julie Marr $ 10 Farthest from the Pin: Larry Daniels, 59 2 $ 5 (no additional money as more than 2 putts taken) * - won tie-breaker Results from Monterey weekend, July 22-24, 2004 We tried 2 new golfing venues for the CGC on this trip, Pajaro Valley and Laguna Seca, along with an old stand-by (Pacific Grove) for our Monterey weekend. We think all 3 courses held up very well the group of 20 golfers (16 on Thursday) seemed to enjoy this getaway, right as Sacramento was hitting it s first extended hot spell of the summer. Each year, as most of this group travels on our getaway trips, we seem to grow closer and more comfortable with each other. All members (along with some spouses), joined us for a rowdy Friday night dinner at Fandango s in Pacific Grove (if we get the same upstairs room for our group next time, we ll have to christen it the CGC room) and on the other two evenings a majority of the group dined together after golf. While there were no golfing spectaculars like what accompanied us to Carson City last year (no hole in ones or in the leathers), we re pretty certain that all who came had a wonderful time. After the last round, the group decided that Monterey will be our getaway destination every 2 years instead of every 3 years and we are already looking forward to scheduling our 2006 trip. Hopefully Poppy Hills will be available to us as the cornerstone of our next trip, with Del Monte another possible newcomer to the rotation. Special thanks to those who helped out on the scoring after the Monterey events (Shelley Barr, Terry Barr, Tom Halbrook, Lane Nicholas, Mike Agrippino hopefully we didn t leave out anyone), and to Donna Johnson for her dedication in getting these courses scheduled for our events. All the efforts before and after help make for the overall pleasant experiences we get to enjoy!

If your still with us, we have one last issue to help fill this page. Tournament Scheduling issues We had an interesting conversation the other day with the Tournament Director at Ancil Hoffman while booking our 2005 events (one for a Monday, the other for a Saturday). We thought we would pass this information along to you to help you understand some of the costs we pay for weekend events. For the Saturday Ancil event we scheduled in 2003 (before we bumped it for a second Lake Tahoe event), we were going to charge $ 45. For 2005, our cost will be $ 65, which includes required carts and a $ 10 per person prize fund. Ancil told us that because their weekend events prices were so low compared to other courses in the area, they would get a lot of beginner or novice groups scheduling events there, and it would slow the course to a crawl. Instead of saying no to particular groups or only allowing so many tournaments on a particular day, they decided to increase their tournament costs to a level that they hope will discourage certain groups from scheduling weekend events at Ancil. As we saw when Haggin Oaks dramatically increased their price structure (though Haggin did it for all play, not just Tournament events), this will create a certain amount of sticker-shock to those of us that have played at Ancil for years at much lower prices. Apparently, Ancil feels they get enough play that they are not in great need of the weekend Tournament business, or that the serious groups of golfers will still feel that the Ancil price is reasonable compared to other courses in the Sacramento area. We apologize up front for this increase we ll let your interest in our 2005 Saturday event at Ancil tell us how often we want to schedule weekend events there in the future! Some good news did come out of the re-structuring of Tournaments at Ancil. Previously, weekend events could not start before 10:00 A they can now be scheduled earlier (making it more attractive as a summer venue). For our weekday events (we have had Monday events here for the past few years), they will not require carts or a prize fund, so if you can get away for those events they will still be reasonably priced. Also, for the weekday events, we previously needed a minimum of 40 players to assure a 9:00 A start that is not longer required, so our smaller weekday groups can start at 9:00 A or earlier (another summertime plus).
