This has been a year like few others for SYSCO. Lots of fun, lots of adventures and lots of challenges and there are still a few months left in Sailing on the river has ranged from lots of wind (and waves), to just the right amount of both, to not much of either, to a paucity of H 2 O in the ditch we call the Columbia River. And we ve heard lots of great stories about members cruising on the river, sailing offshore and sailing to and from exotic places like the San Juans, the Caribbean and Hawaii. SYSCO hopes your sailing year has been a good one. We also hope you reflect kindly on the contribution SYSCO has made to your sailing experiences so you will consider what kind of contribution you can make to the club. Of course, your membership and participation is most important, but beyond that, SYSCO hopes you consider becoming a member of the SYSCO board or one of its committees for the coming year.
September 2010 Page 2 SYSCO News SYSCO wants you! More to the point...sysco needs you! Some Summers You Get To Sail Lots! This was a summer to remember for SYSCO s chief cook and bottle washer. It started with the Spinnaker Cup, a short race from SF to Monterey. Then the Pac Cup...very different race this year because of the rhumb line route and beam reach conditions much of the way. Kaneohe was not different...heaven-like as always. Then the Bac Cup...again, very different this year because of the abundance of sun and absence of precipitation and because it wasn t until the halfway point before we could decide to sail toward Cape Flattery (option 1) or sail back to SF (option 2). The Pacific High (sans Texas-size garbage patch) was a mess this August. The Starting Line newsletter has carried many great stories about sailing across the Pacific. This year it was a particularly great story-making adventure, both ways. But rather than focus on the usual stuff, here s something different. Little things can really add humor and fun to a long distance sailing adventure. On VALIS, we had some things we had fun with. Many SYSCO members who know Edie and me have also met Travel Tiger. If we re sailing offshore, he travels with us. We reckon Travel Tiger has well over offshore miles under his belt, with many of those blue water miles. Once underway, Travel Tiger roams all over the place and gets photographed in odd spots with new friends. Someday he ll probably paw a book. For the Pac Cup he was joined by two friends, Bow Gorilla and Tiki God. Together, this trio of characters did their part in helping us to keep our wit sharpened and funny bones exercised. They are also good at telling stories that the crew can t.
September 2010 Page 3 SYSCO News One of the other little things that enhanced the sailing experience...starbuck s Viva coffee packets. With a sack-o-viva s on the boat, not once did we break out the coffee pot or French press. And now, lets talk about the fishing. It was GRRRRRRRRR 8! Mahi mahi almost leaped into the boat. Catch one of these beauties and you have enough fish for 40 fish tacos. Yep, a crew of 6 can consume 40 fish tacos in one meal. Two hours from off the hook to into the tummy. The thing for catching...a cedar plug. The main thing for terrific fish tacos...mae Ploy sauce. What about tuna, you ask? This is a fact, catch one and you have enough fish for a week, or more. Did we catch any, you ask? With this little thing (see lure photo) we actually hooked 5 tuna in a two hour span, lost 3 at or very close to the boat, kept the one in the photo and gave one back because we already had almost more fish than we could eat.
September 2010 Page 4 SYSCO News But there s one thing you learn after catching your first tuna... don t bring it into the cockpit ;-) Last thing about having a great summer sailing across the Pacific...you can do it, too. At the end of this year s Pac Cup, three boats needed crew for their return voyage back to the Mainland. For the price of a plane ticket to Honolulu, any SYSCO member with offshore experience could have had possibly a sailing adventure of a lifetime. So plan ahead...next time when opportunity knocks, who knows you might be able to answer the door. That is all... Announcements SYSCO General Meeting September 20 th at Elmer s in Delta Park. 6ish for eats, 7ish for program. Joining us will be Ron & Ashley from Columbia River Marine Assistance. We will be treated to a slide show entitled What I learned while boating, which is a compilation of photos and stories, from 7 years experience working on the Columbia River. The presentation illustrates what can happen when people go to sea with varying levels of preparation. The program is very interactive, humorous, and enlightening especially with the input our gang can provide. Please join us for this fun evening of sailing camaraderie and conversation. A good turnout honors our invited guests. If you haven t already returned the SYSCO questionnaire sent to all members about the future of our organization, PLEASE DO IT NOW!
September 2010 Page 5 SYSCO News The SYSCO Fall Colors Cruise is coming up on October at Hadley s Landing on the Multnomah Channel. Hadley s Landing is approximately 3 miles down the channel from the Willamette River on the Sauvie Island side. The 2 mile trail around the lake just north of the dock in beautiful this time of year. A special treat is planned for this year in the form of a Low Country Boil Saturday evening hosted by Bill and Vickie Sanborn & Gib and Teresa Colistro. If you would like to add a side dish or your favorite bread feel free. If you d like join the party but feel your Martin or Cal 20 or whatever just isn t up to the trip, you can drive to within ¼ mile and follow the trail down to the dock. Bring a folding chair and your party favorites!
September 2010 Page 6 SYSCO News If you haven t already signed up for this great event do it now at And more importantly, if you haven t signed up you boat, DO IT NOW! There are people who want to participate and we need boats for them to crew on. Meet some new folks, have a fun afternoon, and raise lots of money for the cure. And of course, the SYSCO Big Bash Awards Banquet on October 16 th. Dinner! Dancing! A year s worth of awards! Save the date. More details to follow The SYSCO St Helen s Race/Cruise was well attended this year. A challenging sail, followed by a great party. Here are some of the photos submitted aerial photo thanks to Tim Carmen
September 2010 Page 7 SYSCO News It should be noted that Bill Sanborn SINGLEHANDED the whole race and never shortened sail! He gave the bigger boats a real run for their money. (photo credit: Gib Colistro) All the following photos were submitted by Rhonda Morgan-Boguslawski.

September 2010 Page 11 SYSCO News Minutes of September Board Meeting SYSCO minutes of Sept. 6, 2010 meeting at Elmer s, Delta Park. The meeting was called to order by Rich Jones at 1852 hours. Present were: Rich Jones, Karen Anderson, Bill Sanborn, Jan Burkhart, Julie Rouzee, Jim and Shari Sinclair, Frank Bocarde, George Brown and Gary Bruner. Rich began by handing out a few surplus SYSCO wine glasses left over from the St. Helens race and cruise last weekend. COMMITTEE reports: Treasurer: Julie Rouzee dispersed another detailed report. With the awards banquet the last big event of the year still remaining, at this point we are at approximately 87% of our budgeted income, and we've spent approximately 43% of our budgeted expenses. There are still payments to be made to McCuddy's for moorage, and several other smaller payments. She reports that we are in good shape, financially. We will be billing CYC and OWSA for Pancho 'rental'. FROG PRINTS engraved the glasses for this event, and will provide, at no additional cost, a special 'Rainbow" edition for next year, our 15th anniversary of working with them. Membership: Jan Burkhart has determined that we now have 128 members, including one late renewal and a new P Fleet member, Brian Shaw. Welcome, Brian! Pancho III: Gary Bruner reported that Pancho will be taken from the water this week and the trailer left at the Columbia Crossings storage yard. The space is being donated by Columbia Crossings. Flags and the blue box (paperwork) will be left with Karen Anderson. Bill Sanborn reminded us that Pancho sustained some damage to the bow this season. Rich will take photos of the damage and solicit repair estimates to have Pancho repaired over the winter. Cruising: Bill Sanborn reported that Gib Colistro (cruising director for life) was present and on station in St. Helens after the Race/Cruise last week. The wind was strong and all boats made it in by about 1:30 in the afternoon. A great time was had by all. Bill continued to say that about 10 boats cruised to Coon Island over the Labor Day weekend; again, hosted by Gib Colistro who was in fine form. The next cruise is the "Fall Colors" Cruise to Coon Island ****{someone needs to provide the DATE for this, as I am unaware...) Racing: A letter listing a few complaints and suggestions from Arnie Polk was read and discussed. While they all referred to the most recent CYC series, Rich will respond to him. Discussion ensued about the 'special committee" that will meet again this week to deal with possible changes to the Vice Commodore position, the Race Captain duties and whether or not we may change bylaws and formats in the near future. There was some discussion about whether SYSCO may want to go with a more 'simplified' race format as was the case years ago, or whether the paid PRO position would allow better racing with the Windward/Leeward set up, including multiple races for some fleets in the summer series. Rich and others will pass along the discussion topics to the select committee. That group will also work on a slate of candidates for open positions on the board which include: Commodore, VC, possibly Race Captain, Treasurer, Secretary, Pancho engineer, and program chairperson. OTHER BUSINESS: The OWSA Sail for the Cure, scheduled for Sept. 26, already has 50 boats signed up for this event, but there is a need for many more, as there are nearly 100 people who'd like to go out but are not yet assigned to a boat. Bill Sanborn will be out of town but has offered UPSTART if his wife Vickie can find an experienced hand to help her with the boat. SYSCO is the overseer of the Sunday Sail event over the winter. Terry Johnson of Ozymandias fame has offered to host these very informal 'round the bouy' events on most Sunday afternoons, beginning in November ***(again...this was not STATED at the meeting, so I'm going from past recollection: good time here for an edit) The SYSCO awards banquet will be held at PYC on October 16. We still need submissions for the special awards that are often given beyond the winners of races. These include: Sailor of the Year, the Rotten Tiller, and Sportsmanship awards...julie Rouzee has secured the services of her favorite 'retirement band', the Rock Hounds, who've promised a couple of 'sea songs' in the mix. The next GENERAL MEMBERSHIP meeting will be on Monday, Sept. 16 at 1900 at Elmer s, Delta Pa. Those who'd like to EAT first might well want to come early. The program for that meeting will be Cap't Ron and his new bride, Ashley, from Columbia River Marine Assist, who will bring a great slideshow about what can happen to unprepared boaters on the river. They do a wonderful job with this interactive, humorous, yet informative presentation, as evidenced by the great reception they recently received at an August OWSA meeting... The meeting was adjourned at 2015 hours... Submitted by Secretary Gary Bruner
