Stadium. San Jose completed a three-game sweep of the visiting Bakersfield Blaze with a 7-5 victory on Sunday afternoon. Francisco Peguero led a nine-hit offensive attack with a 3-for-4, HR, 3 RBI, SB performance at the plate. Juan Perez and Jose Flores added two hits apiece while Brandon Belt drove home a pair of runs. Kyle Nicholson earned the win on the mound after tossing six innings with three runs and five hits allowed. Jason Stoffel picked-up his 12th save of the year with a scoreless top of the ninth. The Giants finished their seven-game homestand with a 4-3 record. San Jose Leads Division By Five Games; Magic Number At 3 The Giants (40-24) enter tonight s action with a five-game lead over Modesto (34-28) for the top spot in the first half North Division race. San Jose is attempting to win their sixth consecutive first half division title. Their five straight first half division crowns is a California League record. Including tonight, there are six games remaining in the half for the Giants. San Jose s magic number (any combination of Giants wins and Modesto losses) to clinch the division title is three. Five Giants Named To Cal League All-Star Team Five San Jose Giants first baseman Brandon Belt, outfielder Juan Perez and pitchers Justin Fitzgerald, Eric Surkamp and Craig Westcott were named to the California League All-Star team last week. Belt, who will start at first base, is leading the league in batting average (.382), doubles (24), on-base percentage (.500) and walks (50). He s also third in slugging percentage (.599), third in hits (81) and fourth in RBI s (49). Perez, a starting outfielder in the All-Star game, is currently batting.328 with 19 doubles, five triples, seven homers, 32 RBI s and 11 stolen bases. Fitzgerald is a perfect 5-0 to go with a 3.00 ERA sixth-lowest in the league. Surkamp leads the Giants in strikeouts (62) and innings pitched (66) to go with a 2-1 record and a 3.41 ERA. Westcott boasts the lowest ERA in the league at 1.23 to go with a 4-0 record. The five selections matches the Lake Elsinore Storm for the most players chosen from one team. San Jose skipper Brian Harper will manage the squad. The California-Carolina League All-Star game will be played on June 22 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. San Jose Looks To Avenge Sweep High Desert swept a four-game series from the Giants in their only previous meeting this season. The Mavericks posted victories of 5-2, 15-3, 8-4 and 2-1 (10 innings) from May 7-10 to hand San Jose their first four-game sweep at home since July, Peguero Returns Outfielder Francisco Peguero (sprained finger) returned from the disabled list yesterday and pounded out three hits, including his fourth home run of the season. It marked Peguero s first game since May 28 at Stockton. In 49 games this season, he s batting.274 with six doubles, four triples, four home runs and 28 RBI s. Peguero is also third in the California League with 20 stolen bases. Outfielder Jose Medina (.167, 2 HR, 5 RBI) has been sent to Extended Spring Training. Winning Close Games The Giants are an impressive (.645) in one or two-run games this season. June Power Surge San Jose has hit a league-best 14 home runs in June two more than the next-closest team (Modesto). Drew Biery (3), Charlie Culberson (3), Brandon Belt (2) and Jose Medina (2) have each hit multiple home runs already this month. Culberson s Big Weekend Second baseman Charlie Culberson collected 10 RBI s in the three-game series against Bakersfield last weekend. Culberson finished with five hits in 11 at-bats, including his first two triples of the season and two home runs. Overall, the former supplemental first round draft pick is hitting.297 with a team-high nine home runs and 35 RBI s. He s also tied for fourth in the league with 19 doubles. Giants In The Cal League Rankings Entering tonight, San Jose is second in the league in batting average (.282), third in runs scored (5.3), fourth in home runs (45) and second in stolen bases (109).
