2 1) ACADEMICS Thank you to our Grade 9 parents for your support at the Subject Choice meeting on Tuesday. We hope that the information was of value and that you are now able to finalise your decisions for subject choices for next year. Matric Trial examinations commence in just over 2 weeks from today. We hope that our Grade 12 s are well into their preparations for the exam sessions ahead and that they are clearing up any academic issues that need attention. WOMEN S DAY Women s Day was celebrated this past Saturday. Wikipedia explains the event that led to the commemoration and the public holiday for Women s Day as follows, On 9 August 1956, 20,000 women staged a march on the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against the proposed amendments to the Urban Areas Act (commonly known as the pass laws) of They left bundles of petitions containing more than signatures at prime minister J.G. Strijdom's office, doors. Outside they stood silently for 30 minutes, many with their children on their backs. The women sang a protest song that was composed in honour of the occasion: Wathint'Abafazi Wathint'imbokodo!(Now you have touched the women, you have struck a rock.). In the 54 years since, the phrase (or its latest incarnation: ( "you strike a woman, you strike a rock") has come to represent women's courage and strength in South Africa. (Acknowledgement Wikipedia). So, last Saturday we acknowledged all the women in our country who play a part in adding value to our lives, in the many ways they do, and thank them for the positive contributions they make to enrich our nation. 8 8) CAMPS BAY 2 ND TEAM RUGBY REPORT A chilly welcome was what greeted the Fairmont squads on Saturday at Camps Bay High School in Camps Bay. How the students concentrate on schoolwork with the wonderful view of the bay is a wonder on its own. Although the rain held off, the breeze was nonetheless cold and the field quite muddy from the last falls of rain. This was the third game in a row where there have been contested scrums in which, once again, the Seccies showed their mettle with some great scrumming technique, even managing to take one scrum against the head whilst not losing any of their own scrums. Although the lineout work was improved on last Saturday, there were certain areas which still need work to bring them back to the standards they showed earlier in the season. The number of lineouts taken by the Seccies off of their oppositions throws were equal to the number of lineouts lost of their own throws, so I guess we could call it evens. The strong point of the Seccies forwards was once again in the loose play and mauls. The much improved link between the forward pack and the backline was again evident with wonderful linking and fluid play. Perhaps the wings could have done with a bit more ball, but the structure and strategy was certainly there. It was certainly wonderful to see the defence of the Seccies, on more than one occasion, clearing the ball from their own line with dogged determination. From the kickoff, play was mostly centred between the two quarter lines, until a penalty was awarded to the Seccies, which Wayde Paul promptly slotted, putting our team ahead by three points. Ten minutes later an unbelievably lucky bounce of the ball put this into the oppositions possession and a wonderful run saw the home team dot down behind the posts, which was converted, bringing the half time score to 3 : 7 in favour of the home team. The motivation was again fuelled by the half-time list of instructions, advice, comments and commands from coaches Cian and Sean, which saw the Seccies come out with determination and the totally positive attitude which has become their hallmark, to score their first try four minutes from the restart by Dylan Stokes, and converted once again by Wayde Paul. Six minutes later, Keegan van Rensburg scored a wonderful try under the posts after a brilliant jinking run through the opposition defence. Once again it was Wayde Paul who added the extra two points, bringing the score to 17 : 7 which was the final score. Once again a wonderful second half where the opposition were denied any chance of scoring, thanks to that definite, positive defence by the Seccies. Well done seems little regarding the effort put in. That self belief and determination must never leave this positive, determined band of players. Once again team Well Done! You have set the bar; keep it up there. This brings the bag for the season to eight wins to three losses. Looking forward to next Saturday at home. Come all and give these determined guys the support they need.

The vibe was on an all-time low, and it was evident once again how mental maturity was going to play a role in making a success of the week ahead. On a positive note it created an opportunity for the guys knocking on the door to stand up and fill the shoes as required. By Thursday afternoon, that vibe was back and the stand-in Captain, Joshua Hodges, with Vice, Corbyn Pond, was starting to show great leadership skills in difficult circumstances. The players started to believe that they could do it. Friday was the winter photos and the 1 st Team, with all the injured and sick, made it a special moment. This was the last time for many of them to be having a rugby team photo taken at school.

12 These last 4 matches, in the midst of the toughest period of the season, also became the most memorable ones. Saturday arrived and the boys looked ready and focused. The warm-ups went off pretty well and they looked destined for victory. The referee on the day played a vital part in setting the tone for what was to be a very good contest and played in a really good sportsman-like manner. The weather was awesome for rugby and the boys took a while to get their momentum going. Again with 7 changes to this line-up meant that combinations were new and needed to settle. The sideline reserves supported positively from the side and, as the game progressed, so did the intensity. The opposition put a lot of pressure on Fairmont s line-outs and their tight-head was particularly strong in his position. Both teams were trying their best to get the upper hand and, with some good patience, it was Fairmont who was going to get over the whitewash through a good scrum and tight head which allowed Ryan McIntosh the opportunity to score a good try. This just gave the boys more belief and they started playing some good enterprising rugby. Mistakes were always going to happen, but Fairmont Bears just kept grinding away. After the half-time break, changes were made, and how fortunate for Fairmont that each one made an impact as they came on. Darryn Beighton played well, and Dino Luiz put in his fair share of hard work, with Gunther Merten even getting a hand in play when he entered the playing field for the final 5 minutes. The game, played mainly by a more determined Bears team, allowed them to finally convert more points and went on to be the 15 : 3 victors. Many positives can be taken from this performance, with Steven Roe having his best game of the season and Matthew Augustine looking comfortable at 13. He also scored Fairmont s second try. The junior players definitely showed that there are good things to come in the future. Names of players up for Man of the Match were: Ryan Hodgson on the flank, Jonathan Nel, Joshua Julies and Jared Muller; however Fairmont s Man of the Match went to Ryan McIntosh. Good effort from the squad as each one had to dig deep, and believe in his fellow team mate. 2 ND TEAM RUGBY REPORT At last a home game, warm weather, and all should have been happy. However, with eight players having been highjacked for the first team due to injuries in their side, it was a rather depleted team taking to the field against arch rivals, Bosmansdam. The home team in turn was bolstered a brace of under sixteen players who certainly held their own and put in a great showing. Once again we were back to uncontested scrums; however, as seen on TV on Saturday afternoon, this also happens in Currie Cup rugby so I guess we must make peace with this. Fortunately the lineout work was back to the previous high standards. Whilst the Seccies held their own lineouts, they never managed to take any off the opposition either. The backline had a slick look about it and I think Coach Sean is bringing this phase around whilst the forwards certainly held the advantage again in the loose mauls and rucks, with constructive, aggressive, systematic play. The unity between the forwards and backs was slicker and a pleasure to watch, with only occasional knockons or fumbles to spoil the efforts.

13 The defence structure and the determination was again evident on Saturday, with the Seccies repulsing more than one attack on their line. The standard of play, compared to last year against the same opposition, was certainly improved and the levels of sportsmanship was far better. The first half saw some wonderful rugby with the game see-sawing from side to side with the Seccies showing their true character and determination. The only points in the first half came from a penalty awarded to the Seccies after twenty-two minutes, which was successfully slotted by Wayde Paul bringing the half time score to 3 : 0 in favour of the Seccies. For the second half, the visitors came out with all cylinders firing and, in the fierce defence, the home team conceded a penalty, bringing the scores even after four minutes. The assault continued and six minutes later, a shell-shocked Seccies gave away a try after desperate determined defence. This was converted, bringing the score to 3 : 10 in: Never say die determined nature of the Seccies came to the fore and a penalty was added to their score by Wayde Paul two minutes later. It only took three minutes for the visitors in turn, to reply with a penalty of their own. The last few minutes of the game had all the Seccies supporters with their hearts in their throats, with the Seccies launching attack after attack on the line of Bosmansdam, getting numerous penalties but hanging in there and staying positive. With that strong heart, team spirit eventually triumphed in the last minute when Dylan Stokes crossed in the corner to clinch a try in the last minute of the game. This brought the closing score to 11 : 16 in favour of the Visitors. Unfortunately this has spoilt the bag slightly, bringing the odds for the season to eight wins to four losses. Looking forward to next Saturday at home against Edgemead! Come all and give these determined guys the support they need. Coach Cian should be positive after this showing and we are all optimistic for a win next week. Go Seccies! You can do it. Believe in yourselves you have already shown us that. 13) 1 ST TEAM BOYS SOCCER vs MILNERTON This past Wednesday we beat Milnerton High School aka Milly s in a league game. We were however without our key players, namely: Daniel Wehrli, Haydn Matthee, Doron Schroeder, Sean Swartz and Richard Masumpa. We were fortunate to have a couple of players from the U16 squad, namely: Burto Abrahams and Cameron Phyfer who helped us to field a squad of 12 players.

14 We started the game on fire with Jean Murugan scoring the opener by slotting home a goal into an empty net after beating the opponent s goal keeper. We then conceded a sloppy goal which seemed to be offside, but the referee allowed the goal. The second goal was conceded from another offside appeal, but the referee allowed the goal to stand and we were 2 : 1 down, with a couple of minutes to play until half-time. Etienne Craeye, aka Messi, kicked the ball about 35metres from goal, scoring a screamer of a goal to equalize the score at 2 : 2 just before the half-time whistle. In the second half of the game, we had the wind against us as well as a very controversial referee. We were determined however not to give up. We were determined to score a winner and it came through the most likely of scorers. Etienne Messi Craeye got the ball outside our opponents penalty area with a couple of players to beat, but Etienne had one thing in mind and that was to shoot a goal. Etienne beat one player to line himself up for a shot, then he hit the ball low and hard across the tall Milly s goalkeeper. With 10 minutes to play we were in the lead once again and it stayed that way until the final whistle. Well done boy s on a good effort from the entire team, and the Man of the Match was Burto Abrahams for the countless saves he made. keeping us in the game. Next up is Edgemead High School in our annual derby this Saturday, at 09h30. See you all there! 14) GAMING Registrations are open for MSSA's MWEB 2014 Western Cape LAN Championships. 15 15) HOSPITALITY SOCIETY On Tuesday, the 5 th of August 2014, the Hospitality Society had the great opportunity to learn skills and techniques from a Pastry Chef from the South African Chefs Training and innovation Academy. The opportunity to learn some icing techniques was open to the school. We as the hospitality Society learnt many techniques which we will put to use in our Disney cake project in September. The pastry Chef Kerrie-Lee Perrins taught us various icing techniques, whilst Minette Everson spoke to us about the academy. During this amazing one hour we learnt how to shape and stack a cake, level a cake with a single knife and how to Dirty Ice / Crumb Coat the cake with butter cream icing. Chef Kerrie showed us how to work with plastic icing and shared trade secrets like the importance of proper kneading of the plastic icing and always working at eye level. It felt like we were watching Cake Boss as Chef Kerrie rolled the plastic icing onto the rolling pin and flipped it on to the cake. Some society members partook in the colouring of the icing and the kneading (a serious arm and hand workout). Finally, it was time for the decorating The Chef did different icing techniques all around the cake in the blink of an eye; piping, spirals, piped icing lavenders, draping and lastly circular balls and plaits as a trimming. We all enjoyed the opportunity immensely and were very grateful to Chef Kerrie and Minette for taking time out of their busy schedules to share their valuable knowledge with us and inspire us to create cakes beyond our imagination.

That was half a lifetime ago. Now all that s left is a oncecharming collection of lakeside cabins succumbing to the Southern Georgia heat and damp, and an assortment of faithful misfits drawn back to Lost Lake year after year by their own secret dreams and desires. It s not quite enough to keep Eby Pim from selling up and calling this her final summer at the lake. Until one last chance at family knocks at her door. Kate spent her best summer at Lost Lake, at the age of twelve, before she learned of loneliness, and heartbreak, and loss. Perhaps, if she returns, her young daughter can cling to her own childhood for just a little longer and maybe Kate herself can rediscover something that slipped through her fingers so long ago. One by one, people find their way to Lost Lake, looking for something: a second chance, a mystery solved, a heart mended. Can they find what they need before it s too late?
