By James Thain Our Stenhus Exchange Group standing in the oldest church in Denmark. This alter was built before the castle was built, and is 900 years old.
1) FROM THE HEADMASTER S DESK We ended the term on a high last month and it is with this momentum that we have started Term 2. We have a very busy term ahead of us, but we will not want to have it any other way. Remember; a busy school is a good school. During the break, our Soccer, Hockey and Netball teams were involved in a number of matches with good results recorded. The Soccer and Netball teams played against a touring team from the UK and won almost all of their matches. The U16 Boys and Girls Hockey teams played against a number of teams and again won the majority of their matches. Notable wins were against Stellenberg and Drostdy. Our 1 st Hockey teams then travelled to Knysna to attend the Oakhill Festival where the Boys team won 3 matches, drew one and lost one and the Girls team won 4 and drew one. This bodes well for the coming season for both these teams. I am looking forward to the coming winter season for all our sporting codes. Please come and support us. You will remember that I often encourage participation. On Thursday I watched a table tennis practice with over 60 players! I want to use this opportunity to also stress the importance of this term to our learners and parents. It is an Exam Term and we cannot afford to waste academic time. It is important to work from day one and not leave things to the day before a test or exam is written. A reminder of the Teacher / Parent interviews on Monday and Tuesday evening. Please make an appointment with your child s teacher, especially if they are not doing well in the subject. 2) GUIDELINE TO TEACHING TIME FOR MATRICS Please consult the Assessment Calendar for test dates and subject exams. URGENT NOTICE FOR ALL PUPILS NO pupils will be allowed to go home early on any day or after a test without a written letter from the parent requesting this. No s! Permission for going home early will only be allowed for emergencies. If a pupil is too sick to stay for the full day after a test, then they must not come to school to write, but must provide the school with a medical certificate. PLEASE NOTE! All pupils are required to be at school at the regular time - 07h50 - even if they are not writing a test. This time will be used for consolidation or tasks organized by various subject departments. All parents are asked to please be aware that when your child misses a Monday or a Thursday test, a letter from the parent and the relevant chemist slip (the date on the slip must pertain to the pupil s absenteeism and medication bought), a certificate from the clinic or a doctor s certificate is required. A medical certificate from either the clinic or the doctor is applicable for missing any exam. A note from you excusing your child from school for the days missed (not test days) is also required. No allowances will be made for pupils missing formal assessments due to holiday arrangements. Grade 9 and Matric pupils must produce a doctor s certificate for tests and exams missed as these are the two exit phases and their marks are externally moderated by the Education Department. Learners are not allowed to go home immediately after a test if they are ill. They have to stay until first break. If they are ill, then they should not come to school. A doctor s certificate will be required. The money raised was with the help of the sponsors and hard work of the FHS team and candidates. R5,000 was given to Charne's charity, The Lucky Lucy Foundation, and R5,000 was handed to Gareth's charity, the Bellville Animal Anti-Cruelty League. The Bellville Animal Anti-Cruelty League will be using the money towards building a new Cattery for their beautiful fury babies that are up for adoption.
5) FROM THE SOCCER DESK The introduction of Futsal at Fairmont from a parent view Futsal is a variant of association football played on a hard court, smaller than a football pitch, and mainly indoors. It can be considered a version of five-a-side football. Five-a-side has been seen as a recreational form of a traditional football game. I would not be surprised if the same views were expressed when T20 cricket and indoor hockey started. The growth of Futsal has been just as powerful. federations adding impetus. As a spectator, the games are shorter and fast-paced. The crowds larger and the spirit high. As a player, fitness levels, communication and discipline are key. All players get to participate as players switch continually due to the pace of the games. My son, Adam Mason, has taken part in a number of tournaments this year during the off season. This weekend Cad4All hosted the 1st Mens Senior Tournament for the year. Adam s team consisted of U14 to U19 boys. The tournament was also used to select the U20 Boys to try-out for Provincial and National teams. The camaraderie between the teams is obvious. This was evident when a senior team member from Cape Town s Falcons approached Adam to commend the team on how well they played. The support from sponsors and football
The introduction of Futsal is the start of an exciting new journey in football at Fairmont. One I am sure will see an increase in players and supporter participation. The beginning of a positive new Era. Congratulations Adam travelled to Dubai with Simsport International Eagles team to take part in the Dubai Football Super Cup. The Team was made up of boys from all over South Africa who had never played a game together before the tournament. There were 12 teams in the group stages and the Eagles finished top of their group. They progressed to the Final to meet FEFA (Robbie Fowler Youth Academy), a team that have been playing together for 3 years. At the end of extra time, the teams were drawn 3 : 3, but the Eagles came home with a Silver medal after losing on penalties. It was a wonderful experience for Adam. He said that the South African team had quite a following as people liked to watch them warm-up as our style is different to the European teams, with the singing and rhythm that is put into the exercises and the singing and dancing on the way to and from a game. Touring Team On 29 March, the Fairmont soccer fraternity took on a touring team from Neston (UK), at the Montague Action Arena. The matches took place in the form of a Futsal format, playing 30 minutes a match. Fun was had by all, with a superb display of skill, talent and teamwork. The girls and boys teams were complimented on their impeccable manners and sporting abilities. Fairmont Soccer - we are proud of you and congratulate you on a set of stunning results.

Official League Kick off From April, all teams will kick off with their first round of matches with the new Futsal format. Transport will be arranged for the teams travelling each week to and from the venue. Venues as originally sent through with the training and match times are subject to change. We will keep you updated on the venues. Good luck to all teams. 6) SCHOOL HOLIDAY HOCKEY REPORTS U16A BOYS & GIRLS TAKING ACTION IN PREPARING FOR THE 2018 HOCKEY SEASON The U16A girls and boys teams were planning to go away on tour to play in a tournament in Hermanus over the Easter Weekend. Unfortunately, due to the violent protest action in the area, this tour was cancelled. Four of the schools came together at the last minute to create a mini-festival that was hosted at Stellenberg High over 2 days. The participating schools were Fairmont, Stellenberg, Drostdy and Montana. The U16A girls played 6 matches - won 3 and lost 3. The U16A boys played 4 matches - won 3 and lost 1 earning them 1 st Place and receiving Gold Medals. This was a great opportunity for the players to prepare for the upcoming season. Over the 2 days, both teams were also involved in team-building activities enabling them to get to know their fellow team mates.
Thank you to Coaches: Mr Clark, Mr Goslett and Mr Erasmus, as well as Managers: Mrs Jones and Mrs Goslett. The U16A Boys & Girls Teams are looking forward to an exciting 2018 hockey season.
