2 SOFTBALL INFORMATION SHEET FOR PLAYERS AND PARENTS page 1 Welcme t the sftball seasn! This infrmatin is helpful fr parents and first-time sftball players as well as returning athletes. Washingtn Brugh s recreatinal sftball teams participate in the Warren Cunty Girls Sftball Assciatin. Each team will participate in regular seasn games, including a weekend turnament. The seasn includes playffs fr the tp teams and an All Star game fr players selected frm each team. The League bylaws are based n American Sftball Assciatin rules. Washingtn Brugh plays ther twns teams frm all ver Warren Cunty. There are three levels f play: Junir (Grades 2, 3 &4); Intermediate (Grades 5 & 6) and Senir (Grades 7 & 8). `FAQs Wh caches my team? Caches are vlunteers frm the cmmunity. The cach will likely need sme help frm ther parents. Fr example, a cach may nt cnduct practice withut anther adult present. When des the seasn start? Practices may begin any time, but with limited indr space, mst caches wait until the weather breaks in March. The seasn begins arund April 20 th. Make sure yur cach knws which games yu will nt be available t play at least ne week befre the seasn starts. What days f the week will we practice and play? Practice days are determined by the caches. Weekday games require teams t be n the field by 5 r 5:30 fr a 6PM game. Saturday games are played in the mrning. Game days vary depending n the level: Junirs generally play Tuesday and Friday. Intermediates usually play Wednesday and Saturday. Senirs usually play Thursday and Saturday. The League schedules the games. What equipment d I need and where can I get it? Hair tie, helmet, glve, sliding pad and cleats fr safety. Starting at the tp, YOUR HEAD Cap, sunglasses, hair bands r barrettes. It s very imprtant t keep hair and sun ut f yur eyes s yu can SEE the ball! Many travel and high schl players keep a rll f smething called prewrap in their equipment bag. Cmes in many bright clrs and is great fr tying hair back. Helmet with face guard and chin strap. This is a rule. The team has helmets, but if yu chse t purchase yur wn, yu can find them at Mdells r any sprting gds stre, helmets are made by Rawlings, Nike, and ther sprts equipment manufacturers. If yu already have a helmet, purchase a faceguard and chinstrap f the same brand t ensure it fits the helmet. Nike faceguards and chinstraps d nt fit Rawlings helmets. If yu wear braces, cnsult yur rthdntist abut prtective muth gear. If yu wear eyeglasses, cnsult yur ptmetrist t determine if they are apprpriate t wear during sprts. YOUR HANDS Glve: D nt use a glve that is plastic. Use a leather glve that fits well, extends beynd the fingers a bit and is sft enugh t squeeze shut. Dn t buy a very stiff glve. There are plenty f glves that are pre-cnditined. Mst sprting gds stres have a gd selectin nw. Bat: The team has bats. If yu decide t purchase ne, make sure it says ASA and that it says Fastpitch r Sftball n it. It will be a metal bat. Length: resting ne end n the grund, the bat shuld reach t the tp f the leg, but this is really a preference. A little shrter is k. The weight t length rati shuld be -11. A 30 bat shuld nt weigh mre than 19 z. A 29 bat shuld be 18 z. The lighter the better in fast pitch. Eastn makes gd inexpensive bats. Batting glves: gd idea if yur hands get sweaty r cld. YOUR LEGS Sliding is permitted in this league. Buy a lng sliding pad t prtect the knee. It shuld cver frm the mid- thigh and t mid-calf when pulled up ver the knee. It shuld be a little hard t pull up, and fit snugly enugh t stay up ver the knee. When yu try it n, stmp yur ft hard with the pad in

3 YOUR FEET place ver yur knee. If the pad slips, get the next size smaller. Yu will wear this thrughut the game. Wear cleats. D nt practice r play in sneakers. Sftball cleats are plastic, like sccer cleats, but with an extra te cleat t dig in fr batting and t grab the dirt base path. Sccer cleats are perfectly fine t use fr sftball, s if yu ve grwn ut f yur sccer cleats, buy anther pair f sccer cleats t save sme $$, because yu can t use sftball cleats fr sccer. Buy cleats at Walmart, Mdells, Sprt Authrity, etc. Equipment: bttm line supply yur wn glve, sliding pad and cleats. The team has everything else. Check with yur dctrs fr teeth and eye prtectin. Bring sunglasses r a baseball cap and smething t keep yur hair ut f yur eyes. Are there any lcal clinics fr players? Yes! There is a clinic planned by Washingtn Twnship Yuth Assciatin pen t all players in grades 2 thrugh 8. The players clinic is fllwed by a caching clinic (cnducted by the Warren Hills HS caching staff) if yu are interested in caching. There is fee assciated with these clinics. Practice hard, play well! Be n time fr practices! G Br! Sme Washingtn sftball facts: The pitching distance fr 5 th thrugh 8 th grade is 40 feet. The bases are 60 feet apart. Junir level f play has a pitching distance f 35 ft, with 50 ft baselines. There are tw first bases in sftball. One is fr the first baseman s use, the ther is fr the runner. Washingtn Brugh stadium is the nly sftball stadium in Warren Cunty. The duguts used t have a drway t lcker rms under the stadium. The field was hme t a prfessinal baseball team at ne time, and players used t arrive by train. Washingtn Brugh hsts the cunty-wide All Star game every year at the stadium. The senir girls play in the evening. One year the lights went ut in the middle f the game. The game ended early and players trphy ceremny tk place by car headlights!
