Wellness Committee Rose Ray Jami Rogers Samuel Brady Amanda Cook Tiffany Dunkley Cendy Espinoza Veronica Gentry Susan Gottschalk Marty Lawrence Samantha Martinez Mary McFarland Jennifer Palmer Tracy Pethick May is National Bike Month and a great way to get outdoors and enjoy the spring weather. Biking is a great aerobic exercise. It s also an economical and environmentally-friendly transportation option that is fun. These reasons go a long way to explain why biking has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity in recent years. According to the League of American Bicyclists, The National Household Travel Survey showed that the number of trips made by bicycle in the U.S. more than doubled from 1.7 billion in 2001 to 4 billion in Commuting to work via bike is also on the rise, especially in bike-friendly communities (BFCs). From 2000 to 2013, bicycle commuting rates in large BFCs increased 105% - far above the national average of 62% and more than double the rate in non-bfcs (31%). John Ragland Claudia Rodriguez Ashley Taylor Natalie Valle Jenny Wells Here is your chance to jump on the bicycle bandwagon! National Bike to Work Day is May 20!
2 P A G E 2 The Health Benefits of Biking Biking is fun, healthy, economical and low impact on the environment. 4 P A G E 4 Simple Salmon with Dill Sauce Ingredients: 1 salmon fillet (approximately 2 pounds) 1/2 cup low-fat sour cream 2 Tbsp. low-sodium soy sauce 1/2 cup finely chopped cucumber Coarse black pepper 1 tsp. chopped fresh dill (or more to taste) Directions: Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Rinse salmon fillet and place skin-side down on a flat baking pan. Pour soy sauce over salmon and sprinkle with pepper. Roast salmon using the 10-minute rule - approximately 10 minutes per inch of thickness at the thickest point. If you want to brown the top, brush lightly with olive oil and sear the salmon before roasting, or run briefly under broiler. Serve salmon hot or cold with dill sauce made by combining 1/2 cup low-fat sour cream, 1/2 cup finely chopped cucumber that has been lightly salted and drained and 1 tsp. chopped fresh dill (or more to taste). Serves six. Each serving contains approximately 288 calories. Pickleball Clinic at Glass Recreation Center The Tyler Parks and Recreation Department will offer a pickleball clinic on Saturday, June 4 from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at the Glass Recreation Center located at 501 W. 32nd St. Pickleball is the latest sport to become a hot craze across the nation, with more than 300,000 active players each day, said Glass Recreation Supervisor Ann Santana. People of all ages can participate. The game was invented in 1965 in Seattle, WA by some fathers who were trying to keep their children busy on a hot summer day. The name was coined from their beloved dog, Pickles, who loved to chase the wiffle-type ball. This is a super fun sport that combines fundamentals of tennis, badminton and ping pong, all together, said Santana. Pickleball can be played both indoors and outdoors on a badminton sized court, with a slight modification to the net, using a paddle and a plastic ball. For more information call the Glass Recreation Center at (903) , or register online at Open Pickleball times will be announced at the clinic in June.
