1 May 2013 JUNCTION CITY CHAPTER #1508 H.O.G. MONTHLY OFFICERS Director Mike Rhodes Assistant Director Deb Auld Secretary Sue Gwaltney Treasurer Karen Connell Activities Carol Ebersole Ladies of Harley Claudia Perry Road Captain Gerry Jean Assistant Road Captain T.J. Schmidt Editor Wanda Allen Safety Kevin Connell Webmaster Orin Auld Photographer Deb Auld Membership Vonda Copeland Historian Ronnie Scheller Director s Report Mike Rhodes Is spring finally here? It is already mid May and we are still putting up with some cool weather. Surely we are done with the cool weather. A big THANK YOU to Gerry Jean, Carol Ebersole, T.J. Schmidt, Rick Lloyd, Sue Gwaltney, Ronnie and Carla Scheller, Shawn McLane and his son Justin for doing the highway clean up on Goldenbelt this past Saturday, May 11. We had to postpone this twice due to the rainy and wet weather. Attendance was down so they only got the portion of the highway from the old Sirloin Stockade to the shop. Carol won an H-D t-shirt for finding the most unusual item, a bunch of hair.i know several of us had prior commitments for that morning and were not able to make it on the short notice. The goal was to get the road cleaned up before the RFTW comes through next weekend. A big thank you also to Gerry for taking charge of this and picking the bags of trash up since I had to leave early. I hope you had the opportunity to attend either the Men s Boot Camp or the Women s Garage party. I attended the Boot Camp and really enjoyed the demonstrations, the different stations and the refreshments. A big shout out to City Cycle Sales for putting these on. A couple of quick reminders of Armed Forces Day at Heritage Park on May 18, the Run For the Wall at Heritage Park on May 19, the State H.O.G. Rally coming up this month May 30-June 1 (if you want to ride down together I am planning at this time to leave around 1 p.m. on May 30). The H.O.G. Rally is always lots of fun and someone at the State Rally will be going home with a new Sportster. In July we will be heading down to Rock Springs on July 8 to spend some time with the kids at the MDA Camp. Keep looking for the s about upcoming rides. I guarantee that it is going to be a great riding season but you have to get out and enjoy it. One last thought, don t ride faster than your Guardian Angel can fly.

4 4 MAY 2013 Tech Tip Dean Mizes service manager Did you know that Harley-Davidson kickstands lock themselves down when the bike is parked on them? The stand will only swing up when the bike is held up off the stand. This will keep the bike from moving forward if it is parked facing down a hill. Jap bikes don t have this feature and I have seen lots of Jap bikes that have fallen over because the bike moved forward. It really works well! Road Captain Notes Gerry Jean Road Captain I had to cancel the April 14 Roller Coaster Ride due to high winds. It will be rescheduled. Four of us rode down to the Carriage Crossing in Yoder, Kansas on the April 20. Five of us rode to the Prairie Band Casino for breakfast on the April 21. We started off with 11 people on April 27 for the benefit ride/poker run in White City, Kansas. Shawn won the top hand and Bozo won the worst. We went to Cassoday, Kansas on May 5 and had three riders. May 11 we rode to Lucas, Kansas to the Garden of Eden and had four riders. The Adventures of Bozo Bozo chapter mascot Another busy month with Gerry. Bozo meets a nice officer while being cited for reckless driving!

5 MAY May Birthdays August Anniversaries May 3 Eric Paxton May 10 Marc Brooks May 26 Chuck Ford May 31 Johnny Ryan LOH Corner of the World Claudia Perry Ladies of Harley April 24 was City Cycles Ladies Garage Party. One of the activities included a self-defense class in which many of our Ladies of Harley members participated. The main topic was centered around what common items can be used to defend yourself in a dangerous situation. Linda Rush demonstrated breaking a board with a rolled up magazine. Other items that can be used for self-defense include belt, pen, Kubotan, tools for your bike, etc. Several ladies also broke a board by palm heel strike with the hand and front kick with the foot, both weapons you always carry with you.

6 6 MAY 2013 jmadog Jeff Maddox sales Posted on October 25, See more of Jeff s blog at So a few days ago I see a fellow biker s helmet resting on his seat as I park next to him. I climbed off mine and glanced over again at his helmet only to see the sticker on the side that read Ride it like you stole it! Now, I don t know if this individual was just making a proclamation about the enthusiastic way he rides, or if he was advertising how he acquired his motorcycle. Either way it made me think about the way we promote ourselves and the sport we love so dearly. Now I can be as rambunctious as the next person, and I have been known to ride hard and fast, but the reality is when I make a major two-wheeled purchase, to a certain extent I need to take care of it. My motorcycles come with a title and sometimes a payment. I keep the proper insurance and registration within easy reach in case I need it. So when it comes to the stole it part, I just don t fit in. Also with the high cost of getting bikes fixed due to the lack of maturity or some other reckless act, breaking it is not an option. And just my luck, if I ride it like I stole it, it would end with me getting a ticket. As I ride off I had to ask myself... what if you rode it like you financed it? A Word from our Sponsor Honey Grant administrative assistant This is the story of an eagle. The Eagle has the longest life-span of it s species. It can live up to 70 years but to reach this age, the eagle must make a hard decision. In it s 40th year its long and flexible talons can no longer grab prey which serves as food. Its long and sharp beak becomes bent. It s old-aged and heavy wings, due to their thick feathers, stick to it s chest and make it difficult to fly. Then, the eagle is left with only two options: DIE or go through a painful process of CHANGE which lasts 150 days. The process requires that the eagle fly to a mountain top and sit on it s nest. There the eagle knocks it s beak against a rock until it plucks it out. Then the eagle will wait for a new beak to grow back and then USE it TO pluck out it s talons. When its new talons grow back, the eagle BEGINS plucking OUT it s old-aged feathers and after five months the eagle takes its famous flight of rebirth and lives for 30 more years. Why is change needed? Many times, in order to survive we have to start a change process. We sometimes need to get rid of old memories, habits and other past traditions. Only freed from past burdens, can we take advantage of all the new things in life that await us. So like the eagle, we need rebirth and there is no time like the present to allow God to make the changes He sees that we need in each of our lives. This story hit home when I came across it at a convention I attended this last weekend. When we see an eagle it reminds us of freedom and we see the eagle on Harley-Davidson t-shirts. The 25th RUN FOR THE WALL Thunder Run will be stopping in Junction City on May 19. Sunday late afternoon, around 4:30 the flags will be flying from I70 right down to 6th Street park. The last numbers we had were over 600 registered and another 150 will sign up in Junction City to go on to Washington DC. If you want to stand out on our grand porch around 4 p.m. to see them come off of I 70, we will be open. May 18 we are honoring our soldiers from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the 6th Street park. It is Armed Forces Day. Have a great May and think spring, riding, and God Bless the U.S.A.
