The Perfect Weather Weekend By Bill Selsky, LIBC President Okay, it finally happened. It has been sunny and warm a whole weekend, and I mean from Friday through Sunday. Best of all, though, it was in Lakeville, CT, at the club s first away weekend. That hasn t been the case most of this year, so far, and the past two-year s at least at Lakeville, it has rained at least one day. Is Lakeville an indication of what s ahead? If so, it means: Warm weather. Pull out the sunscreen and enjoy the sun. We re stronger than we think, or at least I am. I haven t been riding as much as in previous years, and I was a little concerned about those Connecticut hills. But, George and I came back over Route 4, with a wonderful 4-mile climb and some rollers afterwards, and we did fine. George mentioned some sitting pains, but, heck, those will go away. Charles Elioseff and Carolyn Lettieri joined us on the ride and really enjoyed it too. Bring on the hills. I didn t do Bish Bash this year. I have become a soccer dad and had a game to go to, but the boys Phil, Mike, John, Haroldo, Jim McGhie, Jo(honorary)) did and after doing around 80 miles the day before. Friday! Some of us rode Friday too. (I did my own ride. The boys rode. Ross and Morissa rode June, Doug and Roz, probably others.) I started late and just had time to go a little past Salsbury for around 12 to 15 miles, but it was great. Roads are named after us. Well, a road is named McGee, which is close enough to McGhie, and it is a steep, steep climb that everyone except McGhie enjoyed (because they rode it Friday, and he came up Saturday morning). Only Haroldo and Phil saw the flock of sheep, though. We don t need no stinking cue sheets, but we ll use them. Majority rules. Some can take a map and just go. Others are happier with our ancient (but Mike-reformatted) cues. Nancy is strong! Nancy Cymbalsky pushed a stroller with Gabrielle into Salsbury and back, quite a significant walk, and then she rode with June, Morissa, Maria, Charlie, Lynn on Sunday. At least that was the group I heard about as I hurried off to soccer. (By the way, my step daughter, Maggie and her New Paltz team, won the championship.) It s time to eat too much. We get buffets at the Interlaken Inn in Lakeville. It is always fun trying to please everyone s tastes, which I think I did for the most part, but on Sunday, as we had three deserts, I ate too much, way too much. We had an early celebration of Nancy s birthday to come. (She s 21 all over again.) The inn prepared a special cake, we were told their best cake, in her behalf, but they also brought out bread pudding, which they were not supposed to do, at least not in the quantity they did, and something called a chocolate trifle. I sampled them all. They were all delicious, and kept me company into the wee hours. But we all had a great time. Now will this no-rain trend continue on over Memorial Day Weekend and our Lenox, MA, weekend? Yes! And, if I m right, remember you heard it here first.

Don't latch onto the end of the line without telling the others you're there. Otherwise the rider coming back after a pull may veer into you as he moves behind the rider who used to last. In some cases you should ask permission to join. The paceline may be a team training together. Similar jerseys are a tip-off. Ask how the paceline operates. Is it single or double? How long are the pulls? You can figure this out, but it's better to ask and get it right from the beginning. It makes the others confident in you, too. Blend in. Don't try to impress riders with your strength by pulling harder or longer. Take steady pulls and make no abrupt moves. Look for dangerous riders. There may be herky-jerky bike handlers in the paceline. It won't take you long to spot them by their nervous braking and inability to ride a steady line. Ideally, you can position yourself so a squirrel isn't on your wheel or, more important, you're not on his. Bail if you're uncomfortable. If you're getting a cold reception from riders, their pace is too hard or the situation seems dangerous, bid a cheery goodbye, back out and continue by yourself. In a century or other event, a more compatible paceline may soon come along. Bike From Vienna to Prague - Guided Tour A bike tour from Vienna Prague Wednesday, Sept 1 Monday, September 13. Average daily distances: miles, 4-6 hours. The scenery and history of the area plus 2 nights in both Vienna and Prague make this trip irresistible. 3 A Rides Schedule The season is almost in full swing and along with the usual ride leaders we now have The Beacon (Chuck Gleason) as a leader. Haroldo will be leading a ride from Bedford at an ungodly hour, but it is guaranteed to be beautiful with some new roads. Don't let the hour dissuade you; it will be worth it. Also, Ernest is back. The Bedford Ride-75 miles-haroldo Hahn Haroldo knows some beautiful roads on the way to Kent, Conn. and he promises a very reasonable pace. If the 75 miles isn't enough he can make it between 85 and 90. He's serious. It leaves at an early hour, but you'll also get home early. Try to make it. Leaves at 8 A.M. from Bedford. Rt. 684, exit 4. Right at light, left at 22 into Bedford. Right at little store and down the hill to park at school. Call Haroldo or Phil for directions if you aren't sure. John's Recovery Ride-50 miles-john Howe If John is alive he'll lead us to Northport (probably) with lunch at the gazebo. Strong B's invited for it won't be fast. Lake Ronkonkoma - 65 miles - Mike Friedlander Another long 'death march' ride. Bring food. Don't Show Up-It Will Be Raining Ride-52 miles-jo Vlastaris Well its gotten to be a joke about how when Jo leads it always rains. Farmers love Jo. If by some strange freak of nature it doesn't rain Jo will be at the lot. She has refined her ride and has even taken some of the hills out. If she doesn't take a yoga class the day before she will be fine. If she does it is hard to tell what to expect. No birds (other than carrion eaters ) will be on the ride. 5 The Chuck Will Get Us Arrested Ride-50 miles-chuck Gleason Chuck is a brand new leader and has scouted out some pretty roads. He does have a strange goal on this ride: he plans on getting one of us arrested for riding on private roads. Since the leader is usually up front my bet is that The Beacon, himself, will be the one to be arrested. It's good to have a new leader so join him and as usual new leaders will treat the entire group to lunch. The Pace-Line Ride-52 flat miles-phil Last month we tried this one on a windy day. It was tough. Hopefully we'll have a good turn-out and everyone will take a turn at the front. Not a ride for the faint of heart or habitual wheel-suckers (wsd's). Dr Jim's Ride-55 miles-jim Rand I have used up most of my descriptions and insults for Jim's rides. He is no longer a new leader, just a good leader. Guaranteed steady pace and a workout. Save some for the Bloomin' Metric. 3 The Bloomin' Metric Century. Information in the bulletin and we usually push off around 9 am. Friday, MAY 28,29,30,31 Memorial Day Weekend In Lexox, Mass. There will definitely be people at the lot if you aren't going. B Rides Schedule May is here, with better weather and many good rides, on and off the Island.
