If you experience difficulty printing the application, please send an to: Susan Mrwik / smrwik at gmail.com GOLD COASTING A monthly publication of the Long Island Bicycle Club When It Snows, LIBC Parties By Bill Selsky, LIBC President January 21: LIBC s Annual Party night was magical. Sixty people made a ton of food disappear. And freezing weather and a day of snow had no effect on party attendance. From Brooklyn, from Westchester, from Suffolk and Nassau, club members showed up to claim their just deserts, which was part of the dinner buffet anyway. My wife, again, had me dancing (or closed her eyes and danced next to me), and other members, spouses, wives, friends, were grooving (shows how old I am) to the dj. The coveted Most Improved Rider of 2011 Awards were presented, surprising, it seems, some of the recipients. We give these Award Plaques to riders from each ride category who have both grown their ride abilities and shared the benefits with their fellow ride category members. This means they have led some rides, helped ride leaders during others, and in general been a positive influence with their group. For the A Group, the Most Improved Rider award went to TJ Lepore. He can put the hurt into the A rides, and, strangely, they like that. His rides are hilly and fast, and everyone finishes tired. For the B Group, Gerry Widen was the man. He modestly thanked all the other B ride leaders, but, in truth, Gerry is riding more strongly this year than in previous years, and has led the B group on hilly and flat (though mostly hilly) rides throughout the season. He has overcome asthma and emerged stronger after replacing some body parts, making us all think of doing the same to keep up. Hips, though, not fun. Victor Urbach was the choice of the B- group, and while I did not get to speak with him at the party (because he was not there), if Ken Schack says so, I know he deserves the plaque. Roger Mellon was the C+ man of the hour. He thanked Len Kirsch and Patrick Cuvilly for making it possible, and his wife, who it is always good to mention. No Cs this year, because no one from the Cs contacted me, but maybe next year. We also raffle off donated prizes from the bike shops listed on page two of the LIBC Newsletter. These include Bicycle Planet, Bikeworks, Brands, Peak Cycles RoadWorx, Tulip Bikes, Babylon Bikes, Visentin and, new this year, BrickWell, with two locations on Northern Blvd. in Manhasset and Great Neck. Prizes included gift certificates, jerseys, tires, computers, helmets, cartridges, and chain bracelets (yes, chain bracelets) and LIBC t-shirts. More LIBC t-shirts are available from Eric Bertrand-Loesch. over, on to the magical ride season! ALL Until May 2012 With magical night

HELMETS ARE REQUIRED! Club rides are graded according to the degree of difficulty: A For very strong cyclists, mph avg, miles, few stops, hills likely. B For strong riders, mph avg, miles, few stops, hills likely. The group will try to wait for slower riders. B mph avg, miles, stops as needed, hills likely. The group will try to wait for slower riders. C mph avg, miles, stops as needed, hills likely. The group will wait for slower riders C mph avg, miles, stops as needed, some hills to be expected. The group will wait for slower riders and assist those having minor mechanical problems If you are in doubt, try out a ride with a slower group and work your way up. Rules to Ride By 1. Arrive 15 minutes early and be ready to leave on time. 2. Make sure your bike is in good working order. 3. Carry a spare tube, patch kit, pump, and water bottle. 4. Practice safety and obey all traffic laws. 5. Leaders are not responsible for those who ride ahead of the group. A Rides Schedule The new season has some new leaders. The duo Hallwood, Larry, Bill, and of course TJ. Any Saturday ride this month other than the 17th may be pre-empted by the off-island Golden Apple, a good warm-up for Lakeville and other off-island rides. Paul's Ride-57 miles-paul Block Paul has been insulted (and insulting) for many years so this year he will not be berated or otherwise maligned. Yes, a good leader and a good pace (It hurt to write that.) Phil's Ride-50 miles-phil Ayvazian With so many good leaders my job has gotten easier. To Commack with lunch in Huntington at the deli or bagel place. Larry' First lead Ride miles-larry Sarras This is Larry's first lead so as well as buying the entire group lunch he expects to be abused and harassed. Very strong and has been studying the roads at the University of Mike F. The Clive and Judith Ride-54 miles-the Hallwoods As of this writing they do not know that they are leading, but last year each one of them led a good ride separately so now they will put in a joint effort. One or the other will be pulling so the group will be free to be wheel-sucking dogs. The Ides of March Mystery Ride-54 miles-mike Friedlander This hilly ride goes through Port Washington and Great Neck. "The fault fellow riders, lies not in the stars, but in ourselves, for if we do not have gears for the hills, then we are underlings"-william Shakespeare, Julius Caesar, Act I, Scene 2. Togas required, daggers optional. Little known fact from Mike-Shakespeare was actually an accomplished cyclist and he only rode steel frames. Dr. X's Ride-56 miles-jim Badia Jim has been become quite innovative. He has taken the best qualities of his favorite bikes and made them into one bike called an Orlookea. This bike has a negative weight of 6.3 kilos and requires no actual pedaling. I have been behind him and can testify to this fact. Lunch in Huntington. This is the scheduled day for the Golden Apple 75, but if the weather is good on any Saturday it will occur then. I will post it. The Oh No, Jim Again Ride-recovery mileage-jim will be leading and it may be a recovery ride or it may be fast. Depends. he will be riding a trike. 1 TJ's Hot Tub Ride-61 miles-tj Lepore TJ was this year's most improved rider and it addition to the many discounts he gets at local stores, and the avoidance of airline security checkpoints he will be leading a non-hilly ride. He has evolved. LIBC Group Sign-up Sheet Welcome! Want an official LIBC t-shirt. I heard at the club picnic some of you do. So, I'm organizing the order for our group. Just enter the quantity and sizes you wan on the sign-up sheet. The cost is $12.55 per t-shirt. I will get back to you on where to send a check (probably to me). Send me an if you have any questions. 3 . B Rides Schedule Mark Lipowicz (516) Northeast Nassau loop: Hicksville, Syosset, Laurel Hollow, Lattingtown, Glen Cove, Roslyn, Garden City, East Meadow (where s a LIRR announcer when we need one?) miles, moderate hills, with a lunch/snack stop in Glen Cove about halfway through, with leeway to adjust the mileage in case of bad weather. Patrick Cuvilly, (917) Destination: Wyandanch. Lunch stop : Umberto s, in Cold Spring Harbor. Sweet Hollow Road, here we come! Around 45 miles. Joel Gorinsky is back, with one of his patented no-details rides. Daniel Goldschmidt, ( ), promises 60 miles with lunch in Northport if the weather is nice; if it is not, a shorter ride, and no lunch. Rich Suttenberg, (516) He knows how to stress quality: Low miles (45) and relatively slow pace (15 mph), he writes. He also knows quantity has its rightful place, adding: Large lunch! Hamid Alaie, (718) No nonsense here: to Kings Park, with or without hills. Gerry Widen, (631) We will head north to Bayville, then south, passing through Cold Spring Harbor, with lunch in Huntington. About 50 miles. Bob List, (516) Ride destination to be announced at the starting point. 1 Bill Selsky, (516) The Prez is sending the following for ratification: 50 miles to Commack via the Vanderbilt Parkway, then on to Umberto's for pizza before limping back to the lot. Let s show some bipartisan spirit here! B- Rides Schedule Welcome back to all B- riders. I know that many of you have enjoyed the balmy winter and have been out on the road. As in previous seasons, we will start off with shorter flat rides and then gradually build up to longer rides with ELEVATION. If it s too cold on certain rides this month we will not stop for lunch, but we should all have lunch together afterwards to complain and make fun of those who did not ride in the cold weather (as opposed to those who did ride in warm weather). Jay Dennett ( ) - 35 miles. Oyster Bay / Woodbury. "Opening Day" with an easy pace and one hill. Rest stop without food. Andy Warhol (Unlisted) Pick a number and lead for 15 minutes Marvin Bzura ( ) 40 miles. Huntington and beyond. Jay Dennett ( ) 35 miles. Lattingtown. Spring Forward Ride (DST).
