Mail the completed application located on the back of the Newsletter to the address indicated on the form, with your check. If you experience difficulty printing the application, please send an to: John Konz /johnkonz at msn.com Getting off the Island By Bill Selsky, LIBC President One of the pleasures of bicycling is riding familiar routes with your bike buddies, knowing what to expect at each turn, and knowing the same-old same-old will take the same amount of time so that you can get your ride in and still be home to enjoy the rest of the day, even if that takes place in a horizontal position on the couch. But another aspect of bicycling is seeing new sites, meeting new people and maybe testing your riding skills and stamina in a different scenario. One way to do that is to participate in an event ride run by another club. You can certainly do this on Long Island. There are plenty of event rides, such as the Gold Coast, Bike Boat Bike, the Tour of the Hamptons and rides run by and for different charities. These can all be fun to do, though some events head through roads we often cycle on our own, and some are more unique. Bike Boat Bike, for example, takes you over Shelter Island and Greenport, not something we would necessarily do on our own, though one of our members who moved out east has led it for LIBCers occasionally. We did a ride in St James that Patrick Cuvilly was scheduled to lead, and in June the Westchester Bicycle Club invited us and several other clubs to join them on a ride leaving from Croton Park that was a lot of fun and certainly with much different scenery than our usual rides. They offered a choice of three routes, from 28 miles to 50 to 60, accommodating different pace options, all led by their club members, with sweeps, and a picnic at the end included. There were several stops incorporated, including one that included free Italian Ices and a llama farm (how the two were connected, I have no idea), 3500 feet of climbing overall, but nothing major, some nice ascents and even a bike path toward the end. Only three LIBCers participated. New York Cycle Club had 70 participants. Some of us have done bike tours, and some will come on some of the club s away-weekends. Watch the newsletter for upcoming event rides, off-island club rides and away-weekends and, if you have not been inclined to do them, reconsider. They can be a lot of fun. Coming up over the next few months will be some of our own away weekend events as well. We begin listing our Labor Day Weekend, Aug. 31 Sept 3, in Vermont in this newsletter. September seem a long way off, but the inn has just 13 rooms, and when they re gone, they re gone, though we have had people stay nearby and join us for the dinners at the inn. Total cost, including dinners Saturday and Sunday and breakfasts Saturday, Sunday and Monday, is $285 per person double occupancy, a bargain package for great cycling off the island. Additional details are elsewhere in this newsletter. Let s ride! Information for the next bulletin needed by: JULY 15, 2018 RIDES TIME- DEPENDING ON THE GROUP PLEASE PAY ATTENTION

3 A Rides Schedule Note-All rides, unless otherwise indicated, will start at 8:30. A Saturday ride might be replaced with an offisland ride. Although it is a B Ride, the A's might like to join in on Magary's B ride. It could be an interesting ride with much harassment from the A's SATURDAY, JULY 7-8 July 4 the Weekend in Cape Cod - July 5-8. There will be no scheduled rides, but people will be at the lot.. Lee's Ride-57 miles-shi-wen Lee Lee appears to be back into his usual riding shape. He will be going through the North Shore with lunch at the newly re-named ( he now has majority ownership) Lee's Famous Gourmet Muffin Shoppe. Paul's Ride-60 miles- Paul Block. Paul is another one who has gotten back into good shape. A North Shore route. Hopefully we will get more Sunday riders. Magary's Flag Ride miles. Magary will be celebrating the Fourth of July a little late. He requests that people wear any patriotic jerseys that they have. Magary is fresh from his ride out west and has gotten a lot stronger. He will be giving weight loss tips especially how he claims to have lost 5 pounds ( yeah, right, I saw him devouring large slabs of beef) by eliminating certain body parts. He also will be giving a talk on Facebook etiquette and riding comfort. Will he actually ride or just lecture? Phil's Four Corners Ride-This ride will go to 4 very hot states with Magary and Mike attending. The Reluctant Lynn Ride-60 miles-lynn Pinkham. Lynn has learned to love leading the A's around. She has learned many things about deviant behavior which has helped her greatly in her professional life. She is particularly beholden to Larry for opening new avenues of deviance and maladjustment. She is actually a good leader and quite tolerant. At press time I am not sure if Frank will lead for us. If he isn't leading something will be figured out. B Rides Schedule Reminder, all rides from the lot will start at 8.30 for the month of June. Remote starts may have different start times as the ride leader see fit. Steve T s destination and route are still undetermined but he promises to post a few more details before we set out. Magary This will be Magary s maiden ride lead and in keeping with the holiday the theme will be Red, White and Blue. SATURDAY, JULY 7-8 July 4 the Weekend in Cape Cod - July 5-8. There will be no scheduled rides, but people will be at the lot.. Daniel will lead us on a 65mile route with a stop in Kings Park. Frank will take us on an old favorite, Target Rock with lunch in Huntington. Mark L will explore an alternate route but with a similar stop to last week, Kings Park. Daniel will lead for a second time this month making him the lead leader. Gerry promises a flat 62 miles with cultural stops in Timberpoint at the East Islip Art Museum. Hamid will lead a steady but challenging pace to Lake Ronkonkoma JULY 2018 GOLD COASTING PAGE 3
