Look every year for the past several years in the Long Island Fun Book under bike clubs, and there we are. Read Newsday s list of Long Island bike clubs feature story and there we aren t. But we are now! What the heck happened? It was Tuesday and I was headed out for vacation and was reading Newsday at breakfast before I left, and an article on bike clubs on Long Island made no mention of us. I called the section editor and left a message and also called the reporter and left a message, registering a complaint and leaving my cell. A few days later in our nation s capitol, my cell phone rings, and a somewhat apologetic reporter explains she probably missed several clubs but will take the information and get it inserted into the online version. Before answering her questions, I explain that I was interviewed not too long along by Newsday for their annual Fun Book and that I have been called by other Newsday reporters for other bike-related stories. I ask how could we possibly be excluded from this current story. I was told that Newsday is a big company and it seems that Part 2 may not keep track of the Fun Book staff or the news staff or anyone else. None of this makes any sense to me, and I say so. After all, if any business should have great communications in-house and out, it should be a newspaper company, including one owned by a Long-Island-HQed cable company. Apparently, though, that s wrong. I then answer some questions about the club and go about my DC stroll, but shortly after I begin, another phone call from the reporter. She needs more info, like the towns we ride to. I had said mostly north shore and given distances, though also occasional south and awayweekends, generally on holiday weekends. Not explicit enough. Name some towns, and I do, but explain we can and do head all over, generally from the same high school start, but with occasional remote starts. I also again give our web site, saying it includes our monthly ride schedule in each newsletter. Another call a bit later, still not quite getting it, and also what do we charge for membership. Another call will come a bit later from someone else, who is checking what the reporter has against the Fun Book records, where it seems to me this could have both begun and ended. Sure enough, we do get listed on the online version, where I expect we will remain until the next time this has to be written and someone else is assigned to it. Fame, I suppose, such as it is for us, is fleeting. At least for now, though, we are in the public eye again. Addendum: Okay, Newsday reran the same listing in a subsequent article and we were not in it. I have contacted the section editor, and this continues. Arrive 15 minutes early and be ready to leave on time. 2. Make sure your bike is in good working order. 3. Carry a spare tube, patch kit, pump, and water bottle. 4. Practice safety and obey all traffic laws. 5. Leaders are not responsible for those who ride ahead of the group. A Rides Schedule - September from the Westbury High School Parking Lot. LIBC Weekend in Lakeville, Connecticut. My predictions for the weekend are that no one actually went up Dibble and that the motor on George's tandem was discovered on Saturday morning, and I don't mean Mary. No bike can go that fast on human power alone. Those predictions may prompt people to attempt Dibble and for George to remove the motor from the bottle cage. We will see. Saturday, MAY 8 TJ's Ride- 60 miles -TJ Lepore TJ is an acknowledged Weather Sissy, but it hasn't hurt his riding. He promises hills and I know he is not lying. He has led last year, but the rules have been amended to make him buy lunch this year also. Raymond's Rainout Ride-55 miles-raymond Genao Raymond is strong this year. He has been doing the mid-week rides and came back from doing a charity ride in Texas. He will take us to Bayville and then figure out something from there. Lunch stop? Bring food just in case. An off-island ride. The ride may be from Golden's Bridge or from Westport. It may be led by Phil or Mike. Specifics will be posted in the alll groups forum the week of the ride. Maybe Dr. E's Ride-50 miles of recovery- Shi-wen Lee Dr E may be working or he may be off on this Mother's Day and if his legs are still working after yesterday's ride he will lead us around Long Island with his greatly improved geographical knowledge. Dr E. also did an away ride so he now considers overpasses to be hills (Guess where he did his charity ride). Joyce's Indian Food Ride-50 miles non-stop-phil. Yes, Joyce (Paul's better half) this one has been scheduled so you can make it. The C+ will join us for lunch at Diwan in Hicksville (info in forum on the week of the ride). Last time we had a pretty good turn-out. Obviously all club members are invited. Bring clothes to change into after the ride.. Dr X's Ride-56 miles-jim Badia Yes, Susan, Dr X. is leading, but there is no need to worry for we will all just follow him around until... Always a good leader and stronger than ever. LIBC Memorial Day Weekend. For those who are not going the lot will still be open. Upcoming 1. The A group Time Trial at the College of Old Westbury-probably 3 or 4 loops. Practice now. 2. Some sort of New Paltz ride led by the Mayor of New Paltz-Vinnie Rocchio. Rides leave promptly at 9:30 A. M. But how can you fit in daily rides while traveling? ---Shorten driving hours. If you drive for 12 hours a day, there's no time or energy left for a ride. But if you drive for 6 or 7 hours, you'll have time to unwind and explore new roads at the end of the day. ---Switch with your partner. If you're driving with another person, take off early on your bike with plans to meet miles (48-64 km) down the road. Your friend sleeps in, eats breakfast and catches up. Then he rides a similar distance while you clean up, change clothes and get some grub. ---Scout routes. On a recent trip, Coach Fred and his wife Deb stayed overnight in Boise, Idaho. They chose a motel close to the town's excellent 30-mile bike path along the Boise River. Local bike shops are a great resource for routes if you don't know the area. ---Keep gear accessible. Sometimes a great ride possibility materializes in the midst of a driving day. Hey, how about this 2-hour back-road roundtrip to an interesting historic site? It's easy to change and grab your bike if your clothes are in a dedicated pocket of your luggage. If you carry the bike inside your vehicle, don't block it in. The less time you need to get ready, the more chances you'll have to ride. LIBC's Memorial Day Weekend Away 2010 May 28 May 31, 2010 LIBC MEMBERS ONLY Plan to join us for three nights in a pleasant, easy to get to Somerset County in New Jersey. On our fun packed day we will ramble through scenic county roads, pedal along the historic river and canal roads and re-live history. The Hotel Sierra - Branchburg is conveniently situated in central New Jersey just one hour south of New York City and an hour and a half north of Philadelphia. Make Reservation at by April 28 for LIBC Group Rate. Hotel Sierra Branchburg 3141 Route 22 E Branchburg, New Jersey Domenick Sharp Corners Here's the Coach's help: ---Lean, lean, lean! Generally, it's better to increase your cornering angle even though you may lose traction and fall to the inside. Consider the options: Either slide down or ride off the outside of the road and hit things like guardrails, trees or big air (for a while) -- assuming a motor vehicle doesn't stop you first. Of course, if the shoulder is smooth and carpeted in plush grass, running off the road makes good sense. But you'll rarely have time to check and decide. In most cases, the normal reaction -- to stay upright for as long as possible -- can lead to worse injuries. Lean more and you might make it through. ---Stand hard. Give your tires the best chance of maintaining their grip by standing heavily on your outside pedal. Put virtually all of your weight on it. Press hard and push your bike into the turn. When you're doing it right, the machinery will be angled more than your body. ---Brake, then don't. Take off as much speed as you can before the turn, then release the levers. This is another technique that goes against instinct. But braking in a turn makes a bike want to straighten, the opposite of what you need it to do. That said, you can usually feather the rear brake in a turn without dire consequences. It may slow you just enough to make it through. But be ready to let up if the wheel grabs, chatters and threatens your control. In the same vein, the day's only available riding time may coincide with the day's only rain shower. This won't stop you if you have a rain jacket and clip-on fenders handy. Don't forget an old towel to dry your bike before sticking it back in the car. Caution! Don't use the front brake while turning. This goes for normal cornering, too, not just panic conditions. Front braking when the bike is leaning will point you anywhere but where you're aiming. It can even cause the front wheel to wash out abruptly -- and down you go. MAY 2010 GOLD COASTING PAGE 5
