If you think that's not a dramatic lead to a bike story, you must have been some where else in April. Friday, those of us who took off work, did the Bish Bash Ride backwards (Bash Bish). Phil and I are old hands to the ride (and old everything else too), though we hadn't done it backwards in years, but the newbies ended up with an easier ride. This 45-miler (give or take) in backwards mode heads north on 41 to start, instead of finishing south. It's a roller, but not terrible until Bish Bash, and even then, not bad, until you go down. Down is at one point a very sharp curve, and Susan Mrwik and I walked it (I was the bad influence here). Phil and the rest of the gang: slowly and successfully maneuvered the turn. George and Mary, on tandem, probably had more fun on the down than the up, a common theme with tandems, though tandems are most fun on flats. Steve Klein, Russ Goldenberg and Rich Suttenberg all did fine, though Phil led them and Susan right past the 3 rd from last turn on State Line Road, despite yells from George and me, and had a fine time climbing and backtracking from Millerton, NY, on Route 44. Russ, Rich and Susan did the ride with only breakfast to sustain them, so maybe they were a little brain dead and didn't realize Phil likes going the distance. I know they appreciated the buffet dinner all the more. Mona Haas led Jose and Debbie on a round the town ride, and Haroldo Hahn did his own ride (Great to have you back, Haroldo!). Saturday, we were divided. Some did Litchfield and some, the Covered bridge ride. Litchfield was biked by Sue and Glenn Abelson, Sid Alkon, Russ and Steve Klein. Maria Torres led Mona, Debbie Gross, Bill and Lynne Dinner, Pat Mullen, Jose Colon, and Glenn Collins (I think) through the ups and downs of Canaan, avoiding the nasty, long climb on Route 4 and going for the more gentle, if rolling Route 7 to Route 112, per Phil's and my suggestion. The remainder of us opted for a new/old ride (un-ridden for years). George didn't want to do Litchfield again (Route 63 up, forever and ever), so we went with the 60-plus miler that went to Great Barrington, MA. It had a Route 63/Litchfield equivalent, though, maybe worse than the Litchfield long climb. This ride had Route 272 taking us, per cue sheet, to the Monterey General Store for lunch. Except it wasn't there, at least not as indicated on the cue sheet. We had broken into two groups. I was with George and Mary, Doug and Roz and June. We stopped midway on Route 272 outside a Buggy Whip factory (bugs screaming in agony; nice rest rooms). Then we finished 272, we stopped at the intersection, looking at the llama farm across the way, and the Monterey sign pointing right. From Monterey, it seemed that we would have had to back track through Great Barrington to finish the ride. Our group said the heck with that. The other guys, Phil, Haroldo, Jim and Erik Badia, Rich and Susan (honorary guy for the ride) went to Monterey, searching for the General Store and gave up after a couple of miles. (Rich and Susan had not learned their lesson from the ride on Friday). We all converged in Great Barrington for our lunch stop. My group finished lunch slightly after Phil's group, but slightly ahead of some of them at the Interlaken Inn. Susan and Rich broke off in Salsbury, when they were within spitting distance (relatively speaking) from finishing, after deciding they didn't want to do any extra miles with Phil. Unfortunately, they took the wrong fork and did some extra miles anyway. Oh well. Sunday, all of us who rode did the 31 mile Oblong Valley ride, which heads south on 41 past some beautiful pastoral settings and some even nicer down hills. This is such a picturepostcard scenery ride that I think everyone agreed it was the perfect way to end the weekend, unless you had pizza on the way home in Millerton after. Now that's perfect!

Check Ride Schedule for meeting time. More information at or gldcoast@huntingtonbicycleclub.orgcovered Bike Rack area. TRY THIS ON YOUR NEXT RIDE Master switchback descents. Switchbacks are created when a hill is so steep that a road can't go straight up. They're fun to descend because you can lean the bike way over and feel the g forces (but don't do it on a hot day when road tar is soft). Poorly designed switchbacks get tighter as the radius of the curve progresses. These so-called "decreasingradius turns" mean that the right speed initially is too great seconds later. Beware! Switchbacks also can be dicey because the bike is laid over much longer than riders are used to. You enter the switchback with what seems the right amount of speed, then get a big surprise as gravity accelerates the bike. Soon you're going too fast and risking control. Goofing up isn't funny -- it's a long way down if you go off the edge. So use these tips to descend switchbacks safely. ---Pre-judge the steepness and radius. Usually, you can look down at switchbacks to gauge them before you actually enter. But if you can't see the whole turn, err on the side of safety. Go a bit slower than you think you could. ---Adjust speed before you begin the turn. It's risky to brake when your bike is leaned over in a curve. Brake when you're still upright, then let off the levers just before entering. ---If you must scrub speed, use the rear brake. Stay off the front because braking a laid-over front wheel can cause it to wash out or veer off line. ---Take the right line. The correct path through a switchback is the same as on any corner. Approach wide, cut tight across the apex and swing wide to exit. Remember that cars share the road with you. Always stay in your lane when visibility is limited by trees or terrain. ---Watch for gravel. Some motorists aren't very good at negotiating switchbacks and drive slightly off the road, kicking gravel onto the pavement -- bad news if you ride over it when your bike is leaning JUNE 2007 GOLD COASTING PAGE 2

3 A Rides Schedule (9 a.m start) Dr X's Ride -58 miles -Jim Badia Jim took us on some new roads on his last ride. I didn't know that there were unexplored rides on Long Island, but he found them. And they were hilly, prompting the Beacon to extreme profanity! The Beacon Is Back ride-55miles-chuck Gleason The Beacon put on an end of ride display during the Candlewood Lake ride that had us all breathing hard. No more excuses, no whines-he will be leading The New and Improved Pastry and Buns-85 miles -Phil This one has some real hills and some real nice scenery (of all types). Meet at 8:30 to leave at 9 from Golden's Bridge. Direction: Hutch to 684 Exit 6A. Left at exit and right on Rt Park in back of the shopping center parking lot. Paul will be there. The Jo and the Saint Ride miles-jo Vlastaris Jo has been learning how to purchase and milk cows, but will take a break from her agricultural pursuits in Pennsylvania to help the LIBC. The Saint is the MVR (most valuable rider). Mike Leads to Many Places miles-mike Friedlander Mike will head to that Lake, Stony Brook, and possibly Calgary. Newly paved roads that are not on your Hagstroms (angstroms?). The Multi-Club Ride-54 miles-jesus Hernandez Jesus promises not to confuse any potentially new members. In order not to do this he promises not to talk about polar bears, people lost under blankets or cows. No conspiracy theories or for that matter, no talking at all. This promises to be a quiet ride for another reason also. Jo will be happy.. 3 Dr Jim's Ride-55 miles plus 5 more-jim Rand Jim led a really nice ride last time and as promised there were no turns at all. He still owes us about 5 miles from the last time (actually no one minded at all). A Jesus Ride-56 miles. Jesus will not have to censor himself on this ride so who knows what may come from his mouth. Jo is prepared for the worst. The They are Back Ride-Phil and Dr X. Having returned from North Carolina and having brought up some moonshine the newly accented leaders will somehow share the leadership of this ride. Oh no. Will the Beacon provide guidance? 20% Discount on Energy Drinks Accelerade, Endurox R4 and Accel Gel are being offered to LIBCers at a 20% discount by PacificHealth Labs. Go to There also is a flat rate of $5.99 for shipping, regardless of size. For the next 30 days, you can save 25% and get a free water bottle. B Rides Schedule (9 a.m. start) We re back to Mystery Rides for June. However, judging by the content of recent discussions on our bulletin board, the group will try to wait for stragglers whenever possible. Welcome to a kinder, gentler B group. Bill Dinner, (917) Northwestern Nassau is my best guess for destination Bill Selsky, (516) The Prez will be at the lot to lead those who don t make the trek to Mattituck for SBRA s Bike-Boat-Bike. Be forewarned: He s been riding pretty strongly since the Lakeville weekend! Kenny Schack ( ) miles. Kenny's Nasty Hill Ride (a.k.a.) "The Back of the Jersey Ride"). We will climb all the hills named in green on the back of the LIBC jersey, some named on the front, and some I didn't have room for when I designed the jersey. Free beer at the lot for all finishers. Coming soon: "The Front of the Jersey Ride". Susan Mrwik, (516) We re going into the fourth month of this year s riding schedule, and Target Rock remains just that: a target. This time, though, the odds favor completion! Larry Gross, (516) Port to Fort - Port Washington to Fort Totten via Great Neck & Little Neck. Around 60 miles. We'll mostly follow the shore and pay a visit to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point. Patrick Cuvilly, (516) The Paumonok Multi-Club Ride, about 50 miles. We will meet the other groups in Roslyn Park during the early part of the ride, then follow a northwestern path parallel to the B- and C group. This should facilitate riders switching groups on the fly. 3 Joel Gorinsky. Destination TBA Rich Suttenberg, (516) Ride to the hills-and Eat BBQ ride. Since the hills will not come to us, we ll ride to them. Actual route may vary, but I m looking for long climbs like Prospect in Sea Cliff, Beacon in Port Washington, and my personal favorite, 25A past the Cold Spring Harbor Labs. Since these hills aren t exactly next to each other, we ll have some flats in between. There will also be an after-ride BBQ at my house. Ride will leave at 8:20AM from the house or 9:00AM from the lot whichever works for you. Call or me for directions. If you plan on joining the BBQ, it might make sense to be at the 8:20AM start. Also, please let me know if you ll be joining the BBQ so I can prepare the necessary provisions. David Junowitz, (917) , Putnam County Ride. Will we revisit the summit of Bear Mountain? Show up and find out, the hilly way. Contact ride leader for directions to the starting point. JUNE 2007 GOLD COASTING PAGE 3

4 B- Rides Schedule (9a.m. start) Bill Dinner ( ) 45 miles - hills - Turkey for sure. Bike-Boat-Bike. Roll your own at the lot. Glenn Abelson ( ) 42m to 74k Where shall we go? I do not know. We could ride fast. We could ride slow. We could go here. We could go there We could go almost anywhere. By this date I'll have a plan. But lunch may be green eggs and ham. Kenny Schack ( ) 47 miles. Long Beach. We will ride through Hewlett Harbor, Lawrence and cross the Atlantic Beach Bridge. Lunch will be in Long Beach and then we return via the Long Beach Bridge Sid Alkon ( ) 53 miles. Commack. Sid will just be returning from riding in Italy with Marty. This will be a post Tuscany ride. Kenny Schack ( ) miles to Sands Point and Kings Point. Multi-Club Ride hosted by LIBC. Let s have a large turnout of B- riders. Wear a LIBC jersey if you have one. C Rides Schedule (9 a.m. start) Al Rutsky (516) The Hush and Shush ride. There'll be no inscription of this rides description, tho' somewhat longer, and stronger, as well. 'Cause we're well into season, so that be the reason, This effort will be 'don't ask and don't tell!!' Irma Klein (718) We will meander through some shady lanes and up a hill or two to Sagamore Hill with a couple of other hills thrown in for good measure miles should do it for this ride Len Kirsch (516) Len s ride for May was called because of rain. When I asked him about his ride for this month, he said he still wanted to try out the new bike trail. We will head to Cold Spring Harbor and follow it for a total trip of 45 miles. Len, think NO RAIN for this month Mary Grady (516) This past month Mary threw in a run through Clara s Secret Garden to her ride to East Island. This month Mary promises to continue to upgrade her ever expanding ride. 3 Mark Blatt ( ) 50 miles - Lot's of Hills. Little waiting. The comments and complaints Mark gets during the ride will determine the pace on the flats and the severity of the hills. We will shoot for those long steady climbs. Mark will try to put in a new hill he rode over the winter. A quick lunch at some point in the ride. (This sounds like a very serious ride) Marvin Bzura ( ) 55 miles. Kings Park. Sunday JUNE 3 Debbie Gross (631) The Anyone Can Do It Ride through Oyster Bay and Bayville miles Clare Schwartz (516) The Sound to Bayville, ride. 25+ miles. Not too challenging, but inordinately beautiful, this ride along the waterside to the beach. Saturday JUNE 16 Al Rutsky (516) The 'Easy Does It', ride. 25+ miles. Depending on the coterie, who may do this ride with me, I'll wait decision and THEN decide. The terrain and length of this EZ ride. Charles Meierdiercks. This will be Charlie s first ride lead for the group and he has chosen Huntington Harbor as his first destination. Let s all lend a hand by not running ahead of the leader and being cooperative. Domenick Creaco (516) Domenick will lead the C group for our hosting day of the Multiclub ride. The ride will be a 36 mile scenic ramble to Kings Point meandering past the lush neighborhoods of Old Westbury, Albertson, Roslyn, Roslyn Estates, Flower Hill, Munsey Marv Strobing ( ) Approximately 55 miles. When you cross Main Street the road becomes Old Dock Road. A short distance down Old passing left. When riding two abreast be aware of bikes and cars trying Dock Road on the left you'll see a school. We leave from the school parking lot. to pass. Advise people behind you when slowing or stopping. Don't Easy Rider Schedule bunch up at stop signs or red lights. Remember your perfect ride can only be led by you. Harvey Miller (516) Harvey plans to surprise us with one of his unusual and inventive rides to somewhere. Harvey likes rides to distant places, his last ride was totally flat and 51 miles. My advice: bring energy food to nibble. No volunteers so far. Erline and Bob, How about it? Otherwise it will be one of the usual suspects. JUNE 2007 GOLD COASTING PAGE 4
