So, the perfect day includes a ride and eats. Can you say club picnic? First, the rides: all levels. Phil tortured the A s, and himself, riding as fast as he can, making turns that only he knows about and still getting everyone back to our Eisenhower Park picnic spot in plenty of time to pig out. Larry Levy led the Bs over hill and dale (which turns out to be some place in and on the way to Huntington). This was a big group, because the Bs have a big group of riders, and they like to eat. In fact, the Bs do some rides of their own that culminate in bbqs at someone s house (a few times a year: to backyards and to cabannas). When Rich Suttenberg leads a ride, be it local or towards Montauk, you can count on a very good lunch, and, with Montauk, dinner. And there are dinner get-togethers also. Ken Schack s Tour de France parties are well attended every year, and not just by B- riders. The C+s went towards the beach, I believe, before heading back to Eisenhower Park to picnic. The Cs and C+ groups sometimes meet for dinner. Irma Klein, recovering from a stroke, has often gotten groups together for breakfasts if riding conditions did not permit riding, and the group also has coordinated dinners, celebrating birthdays and just celebrated over a meal. Irma also has been one of George s helpers at the picnic. This year, though, it was great just to see her. She sounded great. She said she had just resumed driving again, and she had a cane with her, but did not seem to have to rely on it. Plus, she had such a positive outlook that she was downright inspiring. Every year for the past several years, though, George Cymbalsky pulls together the club picnic and tons of LIBCers show up, and maybe they weigh tons when they waddle home. George is assisted by some volunteers from the club (Irma in past years, as I mentioned, Susan Mrwik, and others) and his family and friends, and I m sure he is grateful, but he does a lot of work for this. He shops, pre-prepares some dishes (pasta this year), along with the standards of burgers and franks and fixings and salads and drinks (both soft and not so soft), and deserts. There are some additional contributors here. My wife prepared brownies for the guestimated number of people George came up with, and they were scarfed down. George also had a chocolate cake, and for the health conscious among us, there was fruit. It was all great. George, once again, did it again. And I m sure you all join me in thanking him for a job well done, and the hope that he will do it next year too. A hard ride may be no picnic, but if George is involved we get one anyway. Practice safety and obey all traffic laws. 5. Leaders are not responsible for those who ride ahead of the group. A Rides Schedule Labor Day Weekend in Vermont, Hot tub, beer naked Windham and new recipes. Paul's Ride- 61miles-Paul Block Paul has gotten funnier, or is that the people around him have just gotten stupider? Paul will take us around the North Shore and wind up in Huntington where he promises a sumptuous picnic basket (which he is carrying) lunch for all. Jim's Ride-56 miles-jim Badia Jim led an interesting ride to Sayville last month. Totally flat. It is hard to say what is on his mind for this month, but he is always a good leader TJ's Seven Hills of the Apocalypse Ride-58 miles-tj Lepore TJ tied six nasty hills together for a smoothly flowing, but hilly ride. This month he is going to add the one that he always seems to threaten us with. If you were on his last ride you will be able to figure it out, otherwise just come along. Now if he would only come out in the winter. Dr E's Ride-58 miles-shiwen Lee Dr E. took his first real lead last month and did a real good job. By leading this ride he is providing himself with another excuse not to study for some important test. He has finally put bicycle riding above medicine, family and livelihood. This man knows his priorities. There will be an off-island ride and hopefully we can coax Mike into leading one of his Connecticut rides. An will be sent out and it will be posted in the forums. Susan's Ride-54 miles-susan Mrwik Susan has not lead for a while and has probably forgotten the power that she can wield over the A's. The moratorium on insulting her may still be on. YOU MUST BE A MEMBER OF LIBC TO PARTICIPATE IN OUR WEEKEND TRIPS SEPTEMBER 2011 GOLD COASTING PAGE 2

5 LIBC Jersey & LIBC Jacket You may see some wearing LIBC Wind Jackets. They will cost $59, not bad, huh? Some neat features: foldable into themselves and with back pockets too. The design is the same as the LIC jersey: blue background, Nassau County and our usual ride destinations on the front and western Suffolk and ride destinations on the back. Want one (or two)? I have a sample version that I carry in my car me (bselsky@juno.com). Of course, we also get request for jerseys. I need a minimum order of ten before I contact the vendor. Before I place an order for them, let me know if you want one also. Jersey prices: $53 standard short sleeve, $51 for sleeveless, long sleeve, $63. They are available in women s cuts, but not everyone cares. Let me know if you have a preference. BICYCLING EVENTS CALENDAR LIBC MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE IN THE LIBC WEEKENDS HAVE YOU RENEWED YOUR MEMBERSHIP SEPTEMBER -MPBC Tour of the Hamptons Sept. 25 (pending permits) -LIBC s B group is talking about doing a 200-mile ride to Montauk and back, probably in August And from further afield: NYCC-Escape New York September 24, 2011 details at nycc.org LIBC Group Sign-up Sheet Welcome! Want an official LIBC t-shirt. I heard at the club picnic some of you do. So, I'm organizing the order for our group. Here is a link to the online signup sheet: The cost is $12.55 per t-shirt. I will get back to you on where to send a check (probably to me). Send me an if you have any questions. Bill Selsky (bselsky@juno.com) Bicycle Riding Safely In A Group Remember, you are not riding your bike, you are DRIVING YOUR BICYCLE. You need to pay attention, all the time, and resist the tendency to zone out 1... Passing CRITICAL: You should NOT pass someone on the right. It is a blind spot and they cannot see you. However, if you need to do this anyway it is imperative that you let them know you are there. LIBC Vermont 9/2-5 Labor Day Weekend FOR MEMBERS ONLY The rides and maybe the hot tub are the draw here, and okay, maybe the breakfasts and dinners, both greatly expanded this year, and included. The Blue Gentian, where we stay, is charming. The cue sheets are accurate. The rides can be challenging, but we have had all levels (A-C) on the weekend, and no one has complained (too tired!). Again, there s a hot tub. Dates: August 29 to Sept. 1. Price per person double occupancy (meaning you share): $285. Includes; Saturday and Sunday dinners. - Saturday, Sunday, and Monday breakfasts. Only 13 rooms and they will go. Send a check, payable to Bill Selsky, 795 Truman Avenue, East Meadow, NY Directions: 95 North to 91 North to US-5 (exit 6) becomes VT-103. Stay straight to go onto South Main Street/VT-11. Turn left on Magic Mountain Access Road. LIBC's Pre - Columbus Day Weekend Away September 23, 24, & 25, 2011 LIBC MEMBERS ONLY Plan to join us for three nights in a pleasant, easy to get to Somerset County in New Jersey. On our fun packed day we will ramble through scenic county roads, pedal along the historic river and canal roads and re-live history. Places and rides include Princeton, Hunterdon, Mercer and Morris Counties. Scenic rides and ride sheets prepared by Domenick for all levels. The Hotel Sierra - Branchburg is conveniently situated in central New Jersey just one hour south of New York City and an hour and a half north of Philadelphia. Near Bridgewater at the Route 22 intersection and Readington Road.; Hotel Sierra Branchburg is also surrounded by great shopping, including Bridgewater Commons Mall, Flemington Outlets, and Short Hills Mall. Rates: Two Double Beds $ plus 15% tax per night for 2 people to share King Size Bed $ plus 15% tax per night for one or 2 people to share plus tax (Queen Bed plus Sofa Bed, Fridge, Micro Wave and Coffee Maker in every room) Hot and Gold Breakfast included. IMPORTANT: You should call out all passing on the left as well, even though the riders you are passing, theoretically, can see you in their mirror. Practically, few us pay that close attention. You may be in control, but that does not mean the rider you are passing won t pull out to the left without looking. COURTEOUS:: Less critical to call out is a left pass that is more than six feet away from the rider on the right.
