Last weekend (in April) two rides, both in the 30s. My designer booties, vented in the back, did their job and I was fine, but several scheduled ride leaders were no shows. They announced that they would be no shows and stuck to their words. The second ride, which I'll call the Sunday ride, was cold and windy and I dropped off way before the end and headed home, into the wind and climbing Old Country past Mt. Misery after Round Swamp. The other guys went to Northport and back non-stop, because to stop meant to knocking icicles off bike and body. In the meantime, I led my first ride of the season (a near seasonable weather day): Wyandanch, of course, and continued to prep myself for Lakeville, more on that in the next newsletter. Would we climb Bish Bash or do it backwards (cue sheets for both ways), and Bash Bish? Some of you also noticed that I became a media star. Newsday contacted me for story ideas and I forwarded one I had just received from DOT's Lanny Wexler about a bike route out east. Newsday then wanted a quote, and later the Times (which appeared with some misquotes in the LI section) and within the same time frame WCBS NewsRadio88 reported, according to my wife, that "A local Long Island Bicycle Club president (who went unnamed) said the route might encourage bicycling." I know how to turn a phrase. I will be happy to provide autographs. Just call me Local. If there is room for Lanny Wexler's article, it's in this bulletin, but more likely, I will copy it on to the LIBCALLYahoo site for your reading pleasure and edification. If you read the Newsday article, though, you got the gist of it. Interestingly enough, to me anyway, Lanny Wexer's article would have appeared in the April bulletin or postings, but DOT didn't want it publicized so soon, and he asked me to hold it back, but it was too late to stop the media frenzy elsewhere. Those crazy newshounds! By the time you read this, the club's first away-weekend in Lakeville, CT, will have been completed. The forecast weather wise is more spring-line, and I'll have more on how it all went in the next bulletin. (I love Lakeville!) Dominick Creaco has a Pennsylvania Dutch Memorial Day Weekend planned. He's ed details to our Yahoo chat sites. More details are elsewhere in this bulletin. Marv Stobing used to run a weekend in this area and it was always great riding and a great time. One more thing: If you haven't done it, send in your club dues and application. UNITE COMMUNITY FUND GREAT NECK INTERNATIONAL BICYCLE RACE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR GREAT NECK N.Y. 3 A Rides Schedule Dr Jim's No Turns Ride 56 miles-jim Rand Jim led a great 55 mile non-stop ride in early April. There may be an off-island ride or I may be away. I will post it. A Jesus Ride-58 miles-jesus Hernandez Jesus has been quiet on the web lately, but his maniacal ranting will be on full display on this ride. Some say that he may be coherent, but others doubt that.
