Dear Parents, In a very short time we will begin our auditions and rehearsals for The Wizard of Oz. This is a wonderful experience and it creates long lasting memories. It is so exciting and fun to perform on stage in front of family and friends. With the fun and excitement comes a large commitment on everyone s part. A show like this does not just happen. A large amount of hard work, time and energy goes into making a successful production. Every cast member is expected to give his or her best effort and cooperation. It is extremely important that your child be at every scheduled rehearsal for the entire time. PLEASE, PLEASE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO SCHEDULE APPOINTMENTS AFTER REHEARSALS OR ON THE DAYS YOUR CHILD DOES NOT HAVE TO BE AT REHEARSAL. It is also extremely important that cast members avoid leaving rehearsals early. We have limited time to learn and practice all songs, scenes and the large ensemble dance numbers. If your child does miss a rehearsal that involves a big dance or ensemble number that has specific blocking or dance moves they may not be able to be put into that number. Please do not put your child or me in the position of possibly having to be taken out of a musical number or scene because they are missing rehearsals. If your child is sick and was not in school or left school early, please me and let me know that your child will be missing rehearsals. Auditioning for a part in a musical for the first time or any time can be a nerve-racking experience for some children. My goal is to make that part as painless as possible. I do not ask any child to do what they are not comfortable doing. I want this to be a fun and positive experience. If your child does not want to read or sing solo that is ok but please note we will not be able to consider them for a lead role. Being in a production like this involves a big time commitment on the part of the child and you. This must be a priority (with the exception of school) from December to March. Please speak with your child about this and make sure this is something they can handle and commit to. Performance time is always so exciting but it is quite an undertaking to put on a show of this magnitude. We need everyone to be ready, willing and able to put in the time and effort this show requires. My experience and research has shown that one of the largest concerns of those producing and directing shows is the over-commitment of the cast. Not realizing the amount of time and energy required to create a character on stage and put a musical together, students may find themselves stressed as a result of trying to do too much between schoolwork, the show and other outside activities. To try to avoid this from happening to your child I ask that you seriously discuss the commitments a show like this involves with them before signing the attached commitment statement. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at tes828@comcast.net. Please take the time to read the Statement of Commitment and please consider helping out in one of the areas listed. Please have your child return that sheet filled out when they come to auditions. Pleases indicate on the audition sheet if you give us permission to photograph or videotape your child. When we publicize in the local papers they sometimes take pictures of the cast and print it with the article. I am so excited about this show and to get started. I am looking forward to working with you and your child. Thank you for your cooperation and support. Sincerely, Terri Schulman Director

Audition Information - The Wizard of Oz When are the auditions? Auditions will be held on Monday, November 26 at 3:00 5:30 and Wednesday, November 28 at 3:00 5:00. You only need to sign up for one of the two audition days. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO AUDITION FOR A FEATURED DANCER ROLE, YOU MUST COME TO AUDITION ON NOVEMBER 26. The choreographer is only able to be at this audition. What do I need to bring to my audition? You will need to complete all pertinent details on each form listed below and bring the following to your audition: Form A: Audition Form (in packet) with an attached picture Form B: Statement of Commitment form signed by you and your parent or guardian. Form C: Emergency Form (no nurse on duty during rehearsals) Form D: rehearsal help supervision sheet (if any dates work to volunteer) Volunteer checklist of committees Music for your vocal audition (if you need to) What do I have to do for auditions? 1) You will be asked to sing a song (16 bars is enough). It should be a song you have memorized that shows off your voice. You may choose a song from the show but it does not have to be. See the link below for some suggested audition pieces. You do not have to sing a solo at auditions but we do need to hear you sing to know what your vocal range is. If you choose not to sing solo, we will not be able to consider you for a lead role. You can click here for the vocal audition materials aring 2) You will need to recite one of the monologues from the packet. You may add movement to your audition. Please note you may be considered or casted in a role you did not audition for. You may also be asked to read a monologue of a role you are not auditioning for. 3) You will be taught a short dance routine. Wear shoes to dance in. The dance audition is done in groups.

What will the rehearsal schedule be? Rehearsals will be on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Rehearsal time will be 3:00 5:00 to start. I may add some Friday after school rehearsals if we miss too many rehearsals due to the weather. As we get closer to the show dates the rehearsal times will be longer. I will do my best to have rehearsals end no later that 6:30 during the last few weeks before the show but it is possible that the last week of rehearsal when we are on stage and running the show rehearsals may run until 7:00 so please plan accordingly. All cast members may not be scheduled to come to all rehearsals. There will be a schedule of rehearsals handed out at our first rehearsal. All cast members including backstage crew are required to be at all of these rehearsals during the last week before the show for the entire time. It is important to be at these rehearsals so we can run the show with everyone. When cast members are not rehearsing during the rehearsal time, this would be a good time for them to work on homework or study. It is extremely important that when cast members are at rehearsal they are focused and listening to the directors. When are the performances? Performances are Friday, March 29, Saturday, March 30 at 7:30 and Sunday, March 31 at 2:00. Only interested in backstage: ** If you only interested in being a part of the backstage crew, I still need you to fill out the top of the audition form. You do not have to fill out any more of the form after you check off that you just want to work backstage. Return the audition form with payment in an envelope to the TBS office to be placed in the PTO file cabinet drawer. Please label the outside of the envelope with Wizard of Oz Backstage.

MONOLOGUES DOROTHY Toto! I ve a feeling we re not in Kansas anymore. We must be over the rainbow! Who, me? Why, I m not a witch at all. I m Dorothy Gale from Kansas. Witches are old and ugly. You are! Oh I beg your pardon! But I ve never heard of a beautiful witch before. (mumbling) there s no place like home there s no place like home Oh, Auntie Em, it s you! But I did leave you, Uncle Henry, and I tried to get back for days and days. No Aunt Em, this was a real, truly live place. An I remember that some of it wasn t very nice, but most of it was beautiful! But, just the same, all I kept saying to everybody was, I want to go home. And they sent me home. Doesn t anybody believe me? Oh, but anyway, Toto, we re home. Home! And this is my room and you re all here! And I m not going to leave here ever, ever again, because I love you all! An, oh, Auntie Em, there s no place like home! SCARECROW That way is a very nice way. It s pleasant down that way, too. Of course, people do go both ways! That s the trouble. I can t make up my mind I haven t got a brain, only straw but some people without brains do an awful lot of talking, don t they? I m not feeling at all well. You see, it s very tedious being stuck up here all day long with a pole up your back. Of course, I m not bright about doing things, but if you ll just bend the nail down in the back, maybe I ll slip off. Whhhooops! Ha-ha! There goes some of me again! I just keep picking it up and putting it back in again. My, it s good to be free! TINMAN Well, about a year ago I was chopping that tree, minding my own business, when suddenly it started to rain and right in the middle of a chop, I rusted solid. And I ve been that way ever since. Perfect? Bang on my chest if you think I m perfect. Go ahead! Bang on it! It s empty. The tinsmith forgot to give me me a heart. All hollow. LION Put em up! Put em up! I ll fight you with one paw tied behind my back. I ll fight you standing on one foot. I ll fight you with my eyes closed. Oh, scared, huh? How long can you stay fresh in that can? Come on! Get up and fight! Whadcha do that for? I didn t bite him? You didn t have to go and hit me did you? Is my nose bleeding? You re right! I am a coward. I haven t any courage at all. I even scare myself. Look at the circles under my eyes. I haven t slept in weeks. WICKED WITCH Who killed my sister? Who killed the Witch of the East? Was it you? Answer me! Didn t mean it, eh? Accident, eh? Well, my little pretty, I can cause accidents, too. The slippers! They re gone! The ruby slippers! What have you done with them? Give me back my slippers! I m the only one that knows how to use them. They re of no use to you! Give them back to me! Give them back! Very well, I ll bide my time. And as for you, my fine lady, it s true, I can t attend to you here and now as I d like, but just try to stay out of my way! Just try! I ll get you my pretty, and your little dog, too! (laughs) ] GLINDA Are you a good witch, or a bad witch? Is that the witch? Well, I m a little muddled. The Munchkins called me because a new witch has just dropped a house on the Wicked Witch of the East. And there s the house and here you are, and that s all that s left of the Wicked Witch of the east. And so what the Munchkins want to know is are you a good witch, or a bad witch? Munchkins are the little people who live in this land its Munchkinland, and you are their national heroine, my dear. It s all right you may all come out and thank her. It s all right now. You may all come out.

AUNTIE EM/UNCLE HENRY Dorothy please! Don t bother us now, honey this old incubator s gone bad and we re likely to lose a lot of out chicks. --- Dorothy, honey, it ll have to wait. We re busy. Now, Dorothy, dear, stop imagining things. You always get yourself into a fret over nothing. Just help us out today, and find yourself a place where you won t get into any trouble. HUNK/HICKORY Who was the genius suggested we move the wagon before the wheel was on? When I lift up the axle you two shove her on. I swear they made this new wheel smaller than the other three. Ow! You got my finger! Now look it Dorothy, you ain t using your head about Miss Gulch. Ain t you go no brains? When you come home, don t go by Miss Gulch s place t hen Toto won t get in her garden and you won t get in no trouble. See? ZEKE Well for a start, kid, don t let that old Gultch heifer try and buffalo you. She ain t nothing to be afraid of. You got to stand up to her, that s all, with a little courage, a little grit. Walk with your head up, your chest out and the next time she squawks, you just stroll right up to her and spit in her eye. That s what I d do. Through this life you gotta walk tall, shoot straight and then you got no reason to be scared of nothing and nobody. MISS GULCH Mr. Gale! Mr. Gale! I want to see you and your wife right away! It s about Dorothy. I m all but lame from the bite on my leg! That dog s a menace to the community. I m taking him to the sheriff and make sure he s destroyed. If you don t hand over that dog, I ll bring a damage suit that ll take your whole farm! There s a law protecting folks against dogs that bite! Here s his order allowing me to take him. Unless you want to go against the law. PROFESSOR MARVEL Leaving so soon? Wait, wait! Don t tell me! You are running away! Now why are you running away? Here, sit right down here. Now gaze into the crystal ball with me Ah ha! I see a woman! She s wearing a a dress! And her face is careworn. Her name is Emmmmmmm ily? Why, she s crying. And now she s, she s going into a little bedroom. Why, she s putting her hand on her heart! She s, she s dropping on the bed! That s all. the crystals gone dark. You d better get home quickly there s a storm blowing up, a whopper, to speak in the vernacular of peasantry. Poor little kid. I hope she gets home all right. WIZARD I am Oz, the Great and Powerful! Who are you? The Great and Powerful Oz knows why you have come. Step forward, Tin Man! You dare to come to me for a heart, do you? You clinking, clanking, clattering collection of caliginous junk! And you, Scarecrow, have the effrontery to ask for a brain? You billowing bale of bovine folder! Silence! The beneficent Oz has every intention of granting your requests! But first, you must prove yourselves worthy by performing a very small task. Bring me the broomstick of the Witch of the West. Bring me her broomstick, and I ll grant your requests. Now, go! I said go!
