St. William the Abbot The Spirit Volume 1, Issue 1 November 3rd, 2015 Pope s Visit By: Maggie Kiley In 1965, Pope Paul VI was the first Roman Pontiff to visit the United States and now, in 2015, Pope Francis follows in his footsteps. On Tuesday, September 22, 2015 at 4:00pm the Holy Father landed in Washington D.C. Pope Francis came to America to spread Christianity and a message of hope and servitude. In Washington D.C. the Pope was greeted by the President, then went on a parade along 15th Street, Constitution Avenue and 17th Street in the popemobile. After that, he attend a midday prayer with some of the bishops at St. Matthew s Cathedral. He then gave a speech to the joint meeting of Congress and visited St. Patrick s Church and finally headed to New York City. The Pope s first stop in the Big Apple, was the United Nations General-Assembly. Next, he did a multi-religious service at the 9/11 Memorial Museum. Later that day, the Pope paid a visited Our Lady Queen Angels School in East Harlem. Shortly after, he greeted citizens while riding through Central Park between 72nd and 60th Streets. Finally, for the moment most New Yorkers had been waiting for, Pope Francis celebrated Mass at Madison Square Garden. The Pope s day in Philadelphia started at 8:40 a.m. From the airport, he went straight to the Cathedral Basilica of St. Peter and Paul and celebrated Mass. After that, he visited Independence Mall, then went to the festival at Benjamin Franklin Parkway and Prayer Vigil with World Meetings of Families. The next day he went to a papal meeting with bishops at St. Martin's Chapel. At 11:00 a.m. the pope went to Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility, where he lived out one of the Corporal Works of Mercy by visiting the imprisoned. Next, Pope had a visit with organizations, volunteers, and benefactors of the World Meeting of Families at Atlantic Aviation. The Pope s visit was a long adventure, but he touched many Americans lives while he was here!
Volleyball Team By: Adam Ramtahal, Matthew Zylberberg, & Tim Vadney The volleyball team at St.William the Abbot is very athletic, determined, and want to win under any circumstances. They are undefeated so far, and it looks like they will continue to be. All the girls show tons of sportsmanship, and win game after game. No matter how tough the opponent is or how many distractions there are, they still win and put a great effort into the game. Some of the girls played last year, but the others are having their first experience playing on the team. They all are very good at what they do. They did have several injuries on the team; Kaileigh Kikkert and Ashley Doht were sidelined for a portion of the season. Their cheers have surely supported the team. With them coming back, they will get even better than they already are. This year s team is one of the best yet! Great job girls! First Day of School By: Tim Vadney and Adam Ramtahal On the first day of school everyone was excited. Yeah, like that s true. Everyone is a little bit depressed on the first day of school. But at St. William the Abbot School, it's different. We were so excited to see all of our friends and even meet new ones. We also get to meet our new teachers or we get to see the same ones as last year. All the teachers are so welcoming and we don t have to do any boring schoolwork. Everyone is excited to meet their teachers for this year, and to meet the new teachers to this school as well. There are so many memories our whole school will probably make, with all the amazing activities we do. We have only been here for a month or two and already we have done so many things. And if I have to name more things, I would definitely suggest joining Newspaper Club. It is a great way to learn about technology and even grammar skills. This club is very fun and it could also help you in the future. In conclusion, the first day of school was amazing and we feel like the rest of the school year is going to be the best one yet! I hope you enjoyed reading our article. Mr. Murphy s Wiffle Ball Tournament ic, not regular wiffle ball with bases. Automatic is when the ball reaches a certain point without anyone touching it, if you bobble the ball it will be a single, double,or triple depending on where the ball was hit. This is different than his normal basketball tournament which is in March and the hockey tournament in May. The new By: Anthony Galasso and Jack Sadler This year Mr.Murphy started a wiffle ball tournament at SWS. Sixth, seventh, and eighth graders were able to compete in the tournament. Each team consists of 4-6 players. It's a 2 game elimination, but if you hand in your team in late you start off with one loss. It takes place during recess and is automatlunchtime activity was a hit! Thanks Mr. Murphy! Page 2 THE SPIRIT
VOLUME 1, I SSUE 1 Page 3 Confirmation By: Daniella Duci, Carli Prefontaine, and Liam Byrne On Thursday, October 29th the 8th graders of SWS received Confirmation. Confirmation is the fourth sacrament that these students received, in addition to being Sacrament of Initiation. The Sacraments of Initiation introduce people to the Church. Confirmation is not only the receiving of another name for these students, it is also the receiving of the Holy Spirit and adulthood in the Church. After Confirmation these students will experience their faith in a new way. One of the bishops will anoint then with the Holy Spirit and your faith is strengthened and deepened. After Confirmation the recipients will experience Christ in many ways. They will now experience Him more as a teacher than they ever have before. After Confirmation they participate in building God s Kingdom with him. The eighth graders of SWS also celebrated this special occasion with other students in the St. William the Abbot Parish. Book Fair By: Liam Byrne and Jack Sadler The SWS annual book fair will take place on Thursday, October 22nd. It is open from first period until eight o clock P.M. Each grade will have their own period to shop from a variety of books ranging all interests and grade-levels. Each student can bring their own money to buy the books they think they would enjoy reading, but don t worry if you don t have enough money to buy all the books you would like. You can bring your parents back after school until eight o clock P.M. During the after school portion of the fair the all can enjoy the story hour presented by teachers and parents. Here they can enjoy stories read to them by some of the SWS teachers who stay after school. Story hour is a fun time for the little kids to listen to a story while their parents or older siblings shop for books. There will be some new books this year. One of the new books this year will be Disney s Descendants by Melissa de la Cruz. This book is about the children of villains. Another book is Adrift by Paul Griffin. This book is about five teenagers who get lost at sea and try to get back home. Will they make it? And will you make it to the book fair? Kindergarten Apple Picking By: Teresa Moulder and Erin Murphy This September the St. William s kindergartners took a trip to go apple picking. They enjoyed picking all different types of apples. They also enjoyed being able to eat these apples! It was a great experience for them to be able to pick these apples instead of buying them from the store. They had a good day picking apples and experiencing nature with their classmates and friends. Luckily the kinder- garteners had a beautiful sunny day for apple picking. The students will remember this day whenever they eat or see an apple because they had so much fun and great memories!
VOLUME 1, I SSUE 1 Page 4 New Parking Lot By: Michael Doht. Alex Cantanno, and Aidan Dempsey Soon our school will have a new and improved parking lot for recess and other activities. The parking lot will have a paved blacktop, professional basketball hoops, and light posts, for when it is dark outside. The reason we are getting the new paved blacktop is because potholes formed due to extremely cold temperatures in the winter. Over time, these potholes grew larger and could cause injury to a person or even a car! Thankfully, the front of the school has been completed and soon the back will be done. The parking lot will also help the parents out a lot for when they drop off and pick up their children. For now recess is on the side of the school with grass for grades 4-8. SWS will also be receiving NEW basketball hoops. The new ones are being installed because the old ones were very rusty and had no net on the rim. The old basket ball hoops did well for the time but the new ones are a great improvement. A generous family gave us the basketball hoops, so we can enjoy playing outside with them. These hoops will make recess more enjoyable and exciting. The last thing we are getting are light posts. We are installing light posts so during the night, kids in the parking lot can see at night. They are working very hard to secure the safety of all the children. These new lights will make SWS a more enjoyable and safer place to be! Thank you to all those who made the school improvements possible. SWS is better place with the new pavement, basketball hoops, and lights! Fall Sudoko By Hayden Shuff The objective is to fill a 9x9 grid so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3x3 boxes (also called blocks or regions) contains the digits from 1 to 9. A cell is the smallest block in the game. A row, column and region consists of 9 cells and the whole game consists of 81 cells. PLEASE NOTE: Due to the formatting, I was unable to make certain lines bold, that squared off the blocks. Put this into consideration while attempting the puzzle.
Adventure Land By: Teresa Moulder, and Carli Prefontaine Adventureland is a family fun place to spend the day or evening. With loads of rides, for the biabout g and small, it a place for all! This year once again, our school will be taking a trip to Adventureland! On Thursday, October 8th, Saint William the Abbot School was invited to come and play with their family and friends. The whole park is open to SWS, so there won't be very long lines. The newest ride is Turbulence. It's such a fun ride that moshow many times they re going to go on it! The school and amusement park will provide lots of food, drinks, and most importantly, tons of fun. It's one of the most exciting days of the school year, that everyone looks forward too. It s a great way to spend the day with your family and friends, and to just relax from school life. In addition the 7th grade took a field trip for Technology Day on October 14th. They rode all the rides, and discovered how they work. They went with their group of friends, but still learned about the functions of a rollercoaster. Adventureland was a great way to learn technology because all of the rides have a different way it works, and it gave the children a chance to have fun. They couldn t wait to take this trip, and we knew they are going to have a blast! Halloween Safety Tips By: Michael Doht, Aidan Dempsey, and Alex Cantanno Halloween is a great time of year for fun and joy, but you have to be very careful! These are some ways that you can have fun, but still be safe during Halloween: Don't wear big costumes, you might trip or fall. Wear bright clothing, so people can see you. Don't go in a stranger's house. Always have a flashlight at night time. Don't go in a stranger s car. Only eat brand candy, not homemade candy from houses. Always be with an adult or adult supervision. Look both ways before crossing streets. Stop at well lit homes, do not stop at dark or rundown houses. Walk on a sidewalk or far edge of road. All 7th and 8th grade students at St.William the Abbot School were visited by representatives from St. John s, St. Anthony s, Kellenberg, Holy Trinity, Sacred Heart, St. Dominic s, and Our Lady of Mercy Academy. The pair of siblings that were here were Liam Byrne and Tim Byrne (representing Kellenberg), and Kaitlyn Califano and Brianna Califano (representing St. John s). Students had the opportunity to choose three schools they wanted to learn more information about. Each school gave out information/pamphlets so that the students and their parents could learn more about the schools. They do this to help the students make their very important decision of what high school they would like to attend. All of the school s presentations allowed students to make a good decision on what high school would be the best fit for them.
