2 Page 2 PRINCIPAL S MESSAGE Welcome back! We hope all our families had a relaxing holiday and enjoyed time together. We know families will be escaping the cold of Alberta this winter. We understand that and for the most part, we are jealous that families can choose less expensive times to go on holidays. We simply ask that you let us know, so we can plan your child s education accordingly. Taking work on the holiday seldom gets completed, so we can organize work in advance with assignments finished prior to leaving and we can be ready to catch up when students return. Thanks to the many staff members involved in extra-curricular activities going on everyday in our school. Mr. Wiens, Mr. Johnson, Mr. Polny and Miss. Burnet are coaching our Senior basketball teams. Mr. MacDonald and Mr. Babiuk are coaching our junior basketball. Mrs. Brown-Allnutt and Mrs. Bland are coaching our Cheer Team and their competitions are just beginning. Mr. Fenton is organizing our evening ski club at Rabbit Hill. These are all activities outside the parameters of the regular classroom, so thank you to all our staff for helping out! SMILES Day, which rewards and promotes positive student behaviour, timely and hardworking students, is coming up on January 20th. This is not a day to stay home but rather a day to celebrate with fellow students and staff the great year they have had so far. This year we are going to Millennium Place and have reduced costs for families.. We are proud of the fact the over 90% of our students always qualify for this reward day. Look for information coming home on the 20th. Parent Council on January 16th at 7:00 p.m.in the staff room. We have an open invitation to our meetings. So if you have not attended and are interested, please join us. Enjoy the month of January, lost of events are occurring, just check our calendars on our webpage! Mike Tod, Principal
3 Page 3 Ski Club W.D. Cuts will be organizing a ski club for the upcoming ski season. We will be going to Rabbit Hill on January 19, February 2 & 16. The bus will leave at 3:15pm sharp returning at 9:00pm. If you have any questions please give us a call. Talent Show December 23 rd marked the WD Cuts talent show. We had 18 acts which varied from music to dance to magic. Great job to our talented students. What a wonderful way to end off the school year before the holiday break.
4 Page 4 W. D. Cuts Basketball Our Junior basketball teams have been selected. Congratulations to all our successful athletes! 7 Page 7 HOCKEY ACADEMY Happy New Year to all from the staff and student-athletes of the Hockey Academy! The student-athletes are excited to jump into the new years skills of advancing our fundamental skills and adding more speed and adding higher level drills into our Academy sessions. Off the ice, students continue to explore different sports to see the correlation of skills from other sports to the game of hockey. The Hockey Academy would also like to announce our Shadow Day 2017, which will be held on Wednesday February 1, 2017 at 1:45pm Kinex Arena. Registration forms can be found on our website athleticacademy.spschools.org or contact Mike Fiorillo (Hockey Academy Director) via Mike.Fiorillo@spschools.org.
8 Page 8 Happy New Year to all of our Rec. Academy families! We are so excited to finally have snow. We have been busy getting our students fitted in our cross country ski gear, snow shoes and skates. Without a doubt, we will be spending a lot of time outside over the next couple months. It is essential that you dress appropriately for the weather. When you have the right gear, it makes your outdoor experience that much more enjoyable. Dressing in layers is a sure way to keep your core warm (1. wicking layer close to the skin 2. warm layer such as wool 3. shell on the outside). Additionally, a good hat, warm socks, gloves and a buff help to keep the extremities from feeling cold. We have extra gloves and hats for students if they happen to forget theirs at home. Welcome back from the Rec. Crew. Mrs. Brown Mr. Witschen Mr. Heale Mrs. le Riche
