2 Chairman s Blog! Happy New Year to you all and welcome to another year of WI events. However, remember, this is not just any old year, this is the year of the Centenary Baton!! Included with this mailing is a flyer from the Centenary Committee outlining plans for the week in May, when the baton is in our Federation. Secretaries please let your members know about this. The baton will arrive in Humberside on Wednesday, May 21 st at an event in Barton planned by East Yorkshire. We shall then pass it on to Lincolnshire North on Wednesday, May 28 th at an event to take place in Cleethorpes, which we are in the process of finalising. Details of both these events will be with you next month. Other celebrations during this week will be arranged by the various WIs highlighted on the flyer, so I do hope your plans are underway so that everyone will have a chance to see the baton. Saturday, April 12 th is another date for our diaries (hopefully WI ones!). This is when our Annual Federation Day will take place at the Masonic Hall, Grimsby. As it s a Saturday, we hope as many of you as possible will be able to come. It would be fantastic if there could be representatives from every WI, especially as the delegates will be voting whether or not to change the name of our Federation - an important decision for us all. I do also hope that as many Presidents, or their representatives, will be able to go to York in March to meet the NFWI Board and hear plans for the future of our organisation. Sue Hawney Public Affairs Selecting the 2014 Resolution Thank you to all who completed the voting slip, our votes were collated and sent to NFWI at the end of January. We should know the 2014 Resolution(s) in March. Our Resolution meeting will be held on Thursday 24 th April at Bonby Village Hall at 7pm. Could each WI please ensure they send a delegate. International Women s Day Saturday 8 th March. This year we aim to walk the full length of the bridge (and back), but of course you can decide how far is best for you, then we will probably go to the Ropewalk for some much needed refreshments! Do come and join us, family and friends are most welcome, the views from the bridge, weather permitting, are glorious. We will meet under the bridge at Barton at 10am - please note the new time. No need to book just turn up. RAF Scampton Visit 24/02/14 is now full. Campaign News Single use plastic bags a menace to the environment. 3 Around the W.I. s Owston Ferry W.I. Owston Ferry W.I. are holding a Murder Mystery Night on Friday 28th March, You are invited to join us at a 1920 s Dinner Party in the Coronation Hall, High Street, Owston Ferry, DN9 1RH. A 2-course meal, followed by coffee and mints will be served. Ticket price: Time:- 7pm for 7.30pm. Bring a bottle and your own glass. Fancy dress optional. Last year I went with another ladies group from Cleethorpes to Sutton Park at Sutton on the Forest near York. We drove straight there, (took about 2 hours). We had booked it for a private visit, (about 50 of us), and we went on one of their 'closed' days. We had a tour around the house in four groups, all going in different directions, and this included a beautiful salad lunch, all we paid for was our own lunch time wine. We had a little time to go around the gardens, then back onto the bus to the Yorkshire Lavender at Terrington, York, (free entry). We had a short talk by the owner, then we were left to wander around and have another cuppa. We left about 5ish, and were back in Cleethorpes just after 7pm. It was a really good trip and would go down well with WI ladies, it was about 30 each, which included morning coffee and the lunch. Sutton House is one of the family homes of Samantha Cameron s family (that s not why we went!!) Frances Rimmington, Lakeside W.I. CENTENARY BATON CELEBRATION A joint event with East Yorkshire Federation Join us to welcome the baton into our Federation, on Wednesday 21 st May 2014, at The Ropewalk, Barton on Humber - DN18 5JR Plenty of free parking! Cost 18, to include Celebration drink, Buffet lunch, Tea or coffee Guest speaker Baton handover ceremony The Ropewalk is open from 10 a.m., so members who wish to arrive early can visit the gift shop, museum and gallery, and maybe enjoy morning coffee in the café before joining us for lunch. Denman News Humberside Federation 2015 Visit to Denman College, near Abingdon in Oxfordshire. Friday 29th May 2015 Sunday 31 st May 2015 Some of you will have been to Denman before and are looking forward to your next visit. For those who haven t been before I am sure you will want to try it, so why not join us on a Spring break in the lovely month of May. You will enjoy coach travel from a pick up point in you area with a stop on the journey for refreshments and arrive at Denman at approximately 3.00pm in time for tea and cakes. Rooms at Denman are excellent, single, twin or triple, all with en-suite bathrooms, some on the ground floor and two rooms specially designed for the disabled and their helpers. You will be well fed and looked after and the courses and tutors are of a very high standard. There is a bar, a shop and some lovely walks in the grounds. If you haven t been before or are on your own, join in with the rest of us, make new friends and have a relaxing few days whilst learning something new and enjoying the Denman experience. The cost which includes transport, 2 night s accommodation with full board and tuition is for members and for non-members. My name is Steve Wale and I am an actor. I have a one man show, "Jack", which, I hope, may be of interest to WI members in WWI commemoration year. "Jack" is highly personal and tells of my late uncle who joined up under-age, The Leicestershire Regiment, and then spent 50 years in mental hospitals. The concerns of his Mother feature strongly. I have made a digital recording of the piece, which you are welcome to receive. Performances require only a simple space.
