1 Monday, October 26, 2015 School Board Meeting Room 6:00 p.m. Rooms 47/49 (formerly 17 A/B) Please enter door #2 LEGAL MINUTES I Call to Order / Pledge of Allegiance The Garrett-Keyser-Butler Board of School Trustees met in regular session on Monday, October 26th. The meeting was held in the School Board Meeting Room 47/49. Those in attendance were as follows: Dennis Stockdale, Terry Yarde, Wayne Funk, Larry Getts, Phil Lemper and Dan Weimer. Also in attendance were Tonya Weaver, Kristi Surfus, Matt Smith, Lucas Fielden, Sharon Molargik, Jonelle Malcolm, Brittany Ash and a member of the press. Terry Yarde called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance. II Mission Statement Larry Getts read the Mission Statement following the Pledge of Allegiance. III School District Aims & Reports A. J.E. Ober Report: J.E. Ober Principal Kristi Surfus reported that the students just finished the first 9 weeks. Monday the Kindergarteners celebrated the 50 th day of school with a movie and root beer floats. J.E. Ober will have 2 Math Bowl teams, one with just 4 th graders and one with 4 th and 5 th graders. Mrs. Surfus also shared some of the students have been on field trips to Autumn in the County and the Apple Orchard. All students will have the opportunity to participate in the Book Fair this week. She also shared the first concert is Thursday October 29 th in the PAC at 7 p.m. B. Garrett Middle School Report: GMS Principal Lucas Fielden reported twenty-seven 8 th graders were inducted into the National Junior Honors Society. He expressed how proud he is of GMS teachers for using community resources to educate the children. They have partnered with the Boy Scouts of America, Science Central and have collaborated with the Garrett Water Department. Mrs. Simon has the Spell Bowl up and running with the first competition being November 3 rd at East Noble. Mr. Fielden reported the athletic success at GMS. The 8 th grade football team had a record of 9-0 and were the NECC Conference Champs. The 7 th grade volleyball team had 1 loss and were the NECC Conference Champs as well. He also commented on possibly offering free admission to all home GMS sporting events when kids show their badge because attendance increased at the football game. Terry Yarde commented that GHS has talked about trying it to increase participation at the sporting events. C. Garrett High School Report: GHS Principal Matt Smith reported the Student Council s blood drive was a success, the goal was 50 units and they had 64 participants. The Character Count Group has started meeting on Wednesdays, which they call We Care Wednesday, and have a project planned for each month. For October they are arranging Trick or Treating in the High School for all J.E. Ober Students. In November they will be doing something for Thanksgiving and will be doing a Food Drive in December. Mr. Smith stated Fall Athletics are wrapping up. The GHS Volleyball team tied for the Conference Championship. There were records broken for GHS Soccer. Mr. Smith had 3 presenters for his report. Victor Hammond presented details and benefits of why GHS should create a Trap and Skeet team. Wayne Funk asked is there were college scholarship opportunities for students if they were on the team. Victor stated there are 15 colleges right now that offer scholarships. Bill Thomas presented details of a New York City trip in March His presentation detailed attractions the students will visit and the cost per student. Terry Yarde commented Bill did a very thorough job explaining the trip and asked when he would need to be approved. Bill stated as soon as we can to start the fundraising for it. Dennis Stockdale stated it could be voted on at the next board meeting. Julie Williams presented the Japanese Exchange Program that she would like GHS to participate in 2016/2017. She gave details on how many students will be
2 involved and the cost for the GHS students to participate. Dennis Stockdale asked if there were 4 students interested yet. Julie stated several kids are saying they would love to do it but wanted to wait for approval from the Board. She is looking for fundraising ideas for the students. Mr. Smith stated GHS is having exchange students come here for the program, he is unsure of how many as of right now. He stated it was so neat to see the exchange students here in the past. Mr. Smith also commented that Dennis Stockdale gave the administrative team a challenge to find travel opportunities for the students and these were just 2 of the ideas. D. Garrett Learning Center Report: GLC Director Greg Myers was absent and no report was given. E. Administration/Innovation Report: Administration/Innovation Director Tonya Weaver reported the 3 principals are on the local Junior Achievement board. On November 10 th at the ACD Museum, Katie Treesh will be recognized as an outstanding educator, Chad Kennedy and Patti Taylor will be honored as outstanding volunteers. Also, Bill Yoder Ford and Walt Fuller from M&S Steel will be inducted into the DeKalb County Business Hall of Fame. She congratulated Tony Thomas on his winning of the 2015 Innovation in Teaching Award that Fort Wayne Business Weekly honors. On November 19 th the administration team will have NWEA training. Mrs. Weaver stated on November 24 th she will be looking at data and reports for teachers. On October 14 th the strategic planning committee met and discussed the community survey. Dan Weimer and Terry Funk are on the calendar committee and they are moving ahead on the staff survey, it was finished today. She also reported the DeKalb County Spelling Bee will be hosted at GKB in February and is in need of judges and will need help from teachers. F. Superintendent Report: Superintendent Dennis Stockdale gave an update on the Eagle project; the cement has been poured and they are going to be dressing it up and finishing the landscape for the final presentation in November. He stated that Junior Custer raised the funds on his own. Mr. Stockdale reported the Board will be approving the budget tonight. He also stated Tonya Weaver, Lucas Fielden and Matt Smith have been part of the business tours in which they partner with local businesses and the community. They have partnered with Dekko and Ben Smaltz. They are looking for programming that comes from this to add to the curriculum. Mr. Stockdale announced he is working with Transportation to develop a strategy of bus transportation in the mornings for current students that are west of Randolph St. to CR 52 and Hampshire St. to north of the railroad track, so these students do not have to walk to school in the cold weather. This would be starting in Late November. Mr. Stockdale also introduced Brittany Ash as an Administrative Specialist; she will be assisting in developing more in-depth minutes from the board meetings for the community to have a better understanding of the meeting. IV Public Comments There were no comments made from the public. V Approval of Minutes A motion was made by Phil Lemper to approve the September 21, 2015 Minutes. Dan Weimer seconded the motion. Approval was 5 and 0. VI Consent Items A motion was made by Terry Yarde to approve the Approval of Claims/Payroll/Financial Statement ending September 30, 2015 / Bank Reconciliation. Larry Getts seconded the motion. Approval was 5 and 0. VII Personnel A motion was made by Larry Getts to approve the following: - Tim Kidder as Varsity Assistant Boy s Basketball Coach. - Cody Henson as Varsity Assistant Boy s Basketball Coach.

Dan Weimer seconded the motion. Approval was 5 and 0. Terry Yarde asked if Tyler Lanning, Bryce Schendel and Travis Carunchia were assistant wrestling coaches. Dennis Stockdale confirmed they were. VIII Action Items A. Recommendation to Adopt the 2016 School Budget Phil Lemper made a motion for approval. Larry Getts seconded the motion. Approval was 5 and 0. B. Recommendation to Approve the Attendance of 2 Instructors/Administrators to attend the inacol Symposium in Orlando, FL (November 8-11, 2015) Larry Getts made a motion for approval. Wayne Funk seconded the motion. Approval was 5 and 0. C. Recommendation to Approve 2 GMS Instructors to attend the NCTM Conference in Nashville, TN (November 18-20, 2015) Phil Lemper made a motion for approval. Wayne Funk seconded the motion. Approval was 5 and 0. D. Recommendation to Approve 2 Instructors/Directors to attend the FETC Conference in Orlando, FL (January 12-15, 2016) Dan Weimer made a motion for approval. Phil Lemper seconded the motion. Approval was 5 and 0. E. Recommendation to accept the following grant awards and donations: 2015 Safe Haven Grant $15, J.E. Ober Extra Curricular Activities Miscellaneous Organizations and Individuals: Altarstar Church Donating to the Boomerang Backpack Program $1, Larry Getts made a motion for approval. Wayne Funk seconded the motion. Approval was 5 and 0.
4 F. Recommendation to approve a GHS Field Trip to Dayton University in Dayton, OH (December 30, 2015) Dan Weimer made a motion for approval. Larry Getts seconded the motion. Approval was 5 and 0. G. Recommendation to approve the Conflict of Interest Statement for Beth Craighead-Folzenlogel Wayne Funk made a motion for approval. Larry Getts seconded the motion. Approval was 5 and 0. H. Recommendation to approve the Japanese Exchange Program (July 21 August 4, 2016) Larry Gets made a motion to approve. Wayne Funk seconded the motion. Approval was 5 and 0. X Board Member Comments & Committee Reports Mr. Getts stated to Victor Hammond what a great job he did and was great to see the confidence he had and how he presented himself. He also applauded Tony Thomas for his award and glad he has carried on the tradition. Mr. Getts also applauded Julie Williams and Bill Thomas on their presentations and made the comment he likes how the school aims high and how they think outside of the box. He also stated the Parks Authority had a Halloween movie night and appreciated the support of the school because the attendance of J.E. Ober and Middle School students was high. Mr. Lemper also commented on the great presentations. He also stated there were many students that came to Lemper Fields on field trips. The children were really well behaved and Garrett students can come back anytime. He made the statement that the teachers did a great job with the kids. Mr. Weimer asked Victor Hammond if he had any students already interested in the Trap & Skeet team. Victor responded that several students are interested. He also asked if firearms are available already. Victor said they are available to students right now if they are interested. Mr. Weimer complimented GKB by saying good work. He works in the community and this has been the best year of positives and it is good to hear. Mr. Funk commented that it is encouraging to him to see kids traveling and see other parts of the world and other cultures. He told Victor Hammond that he hopes he is successful and we can get the shooting program off the ground. Mr. Yarde commented that it is nice to hear from the staff and they are all doing a great job; keep up the good work. He also stated he thinks the trips are great. He wished he had those opportunities when he was in school because he thinks they are great opportunities for kids.
