1 MHMS Jr. Pawprint Issue 2 January th Annual Spelling Bee By Amanda Nebral, Grade 6 On December 11, 2015 our school had a spelling bee. First, students had to enter the spell-offs to make it into the bee. The top five students, per grade, moved on to the bee. Haiden Zinzow, grade 8, won the spelling bee, and is moving on to the Regional Spelling Bee! Regionals takes place on February 6, 2016, at 1:00 pm at the GE Theatre in Proctors. Good luck, Haiden!! Yuda Bands By Julia Sober, grade 7 What are Yuda Bands? Yuda Bands are coconut shell and leather bracelets handmade in Guatemala. With your purchase, you can help a 15 year old girl named Tamini in Zimbabwe go to school. Yuda Bands come in many colors and prints. They cost seven dollars each. Builders Club will be selling them in February at each grade s lunch. I think that it s a good thing to do for this young girl who can get an education, said Builders Club member, Meghan Bennett. They are pretty bracelets for a good cause.

2 Non-Perishable Food Drive By Amanda Nebral, grade 6 From November 10 to November 18, 2015, Builder s Club held a non-perishable food drive. There were over 600 cans donated! Mrs. Streeter s homeroom donated the most food, so they won a pizza party! All proceeds went to the Anchor. Congratulations Mrs. Streeter s grade 6 homeroom! Student Council By Amanda Nebral, grade 6 In the beginning of this quarter, our school held student council elections. 6th graders ran for secretary/treasurer. 7th graders ran for vice president. 8th graders ran for president. Each candidate had a YouTube video. All social studies teachers took time out of all of their classes to show the videos. The candidates running for secretary/treasurer were James Colvin, Landon Flach, and Ethan Wilkinson. The candidates running for vice president were Jenna Hoffman and Laura Nwaefuna. The candidates running for president were Callie Haller, Makaila Maier, and Emma Mcguane. The winner for secretary/treasurer was Ethan Wilkinson. The winner for vice president was Jenna Hoffman. And our school s president is Emma McGuane! Congratulations Ethan, Jenna, and Emma!

3 Selling Bells By Becca Nihill, Grade 6 Builders Club sold bells from December 13th to the 17th. They were sold in the cafeteria at students lunchtimes. Each bell was a dollar and students got to decorate them with glitter, ribbon, and stickers. There was a total of thirty-eight bells sold. The money made was given to the Albany Medical Center Pediatric Trauma Unit. Pediatric Trauma is when an infant or child gets a traumatizing injury. Honor Rolls By Amanda Nebral, Grade 6 In the first quarter so many kids made honor rolls! If your average was 85-89%, you are on the honor roll! If your average was 90-94%, you are on the high honor roll! If your average was %, you are on the principal s list! Twelve 6th graders made it on to the honor roll. Twelve 7th graders made honor roll. Sixteen 8th graders made it on to the honor roll, also. Congratulations to everyone on the honor roll! Twenty-one 6th graders made it on to high honor roll. So did twenty-seven 7th graders, and twenty-five 8th graders. Congratulations to everyone on the high honor roll! Twenty-six 6th graders, eighteen 7th graders, and nineteen 8th graders made it on to the principal s list. Congratulations to everyone on the principal s list! Hopefully this quarter, we can have EVEN MORE students on the honor rolls!

4 MHMS Girls Modified Basketball Team By Meghan Bennett, grade 7 The Modified Girls basketball team. It is so much fun to be on! We are a great team! We are all friends and we love to be with each other! We have spaghetti dinners! It is a lot of fun to be around my teammates. Our coach, Mrs. Young, is a great basketball coach. She conditions us and makes us better players. She teaches us dribbling skills and form shooting. So far we are 7-0. Aside from the basketball games, the bus rides are so much fun! We play truth or dare with coach and laugh a lot! I love being a part of this team. Boys Mod Squad By Matthew Jung and Blake Decker, grade 7 This year the boys modified team hasn't had their best season so far. The team got a new basketball coach. His name Mr. Porter, and he is a great coach and after every loss he motivates us to keep our heads up and win the next one. We still have half the season left and we hope to win some games down the road.

5 Math Scavenger Hunt By: Amanda Nebral and Becca Nihill, Grade 6 In grade 6, Mrs. Young s math classes did scavenger hunts. The students had to find math problems around the room. Every problem had a letter. Students had to write down the letters as they did the math problems. When students answered a problem, the answer was on a different card. When they were done doing all ten math problems they had to unscramble all of the letters to make a word. Can you unscramble the letters? B P T S I A H N R U Iron Giraffe Challenge by Meghan Bennett, Tyler Dorn, Jenna Hoffman, George Isbester Kaelyn Kulpa, Alexis Tedford -grade 7 You can help raise money for the Iron Giraffe Challenge by going to the dance on January 28. Student Council will match all the admission money paid up to $750! It costs $5 to go. Or, you can enter the Name the Giraffe contest sponsored by Builder s Club. It costs only a quarter to enter your name suggestion for the giraffe outside Room 316. You can enter as many times as you want. What will the winning name be??

6 Turner Construction in Technology Class by Kate Harrington, grade 7 This quarter's 6th,7th, and 8th grade technology classes had the opportunity to learn from notorious Turner Construction. The Turner construction crew taught us everything from budgeting to building a doghouse on the computer. We learned about the budgeter, the architect and the engineer s jobs. Turner has built some of the largest venues in the world. Some of those venues are Yankee stadium and the Philadelphia Eagles stadium. The last project we are doing with Turner was that we are building the tallest building while staying under our budget but we did not have wood, we had straws, masking tape, paper clips and construction paper. My group is making a triangle shaped building because triangles are very strong. Turner taught us a lot of things and I think I can speak for everyone when I say that they got us more interested in the world of construction. Modified by Josh Donnelly, grade 7 Wrestling There are eight wrestlers on our team. At practice, we run in the school to warm up and we do a lot of stretches. Our coach, Tommy Gibbons, is Reese Steele s dad. Joe McCabe, a retired coach, comes in and he shows us moves and explains how they are done. We alternate opponents and practice with team members who are close to our weight classes. Our first match was at Cairo Durham. Two times we went to Tamarac and one time to Berlin. We also went to Coxsackie. We faced Greenville and Rensselaer here at the high school. Matches are for all teams, modified through varsity. We wear singlets and headgear. Headgear protects our ears and the sides of our heads. Although it is a painful and rough sport, wrestling is a lot of fun!
