1 BMS WEEKLY All new teachers are welcomed to Brawley Middle All about Mr.Fatton Written by: Natalie Batten,Gewell Oliver, and Carolyn Mr. Fatton is the new 6th grade science teacher. It is his 1st Year of teaching Mr.Fatton is from Haiti and he came over to America in 2010 after the earthquake. He is married and has one kid. A picture of Mr.Fatton and his son. We asked what his childhood was like in Haiti and he said I grew up where I had to make my own toys and always had to play outside because I didn t have any video games nor fun toys I could buy from the store. I enjoyed these experiences because they helped me a lot. He learned how to live with whatever he had and to be content. Mr. Fatton also had a lot of friends and they would hang out all the time. 1

2 He said I came to America because the education is better and there are more opportunities compared to Haiti where education is the only way to get out of poverty. Also the environment gives you a hands-on experiment. When students come to school they are excited to go to his class because he makes class fun. Mr. Fatton attended the university of Johnson C Smith. He loves teaching his kids in a fun way like doing experiments, explaining opportunities compared to Haiti where education is the out of poverty. Also the environment gives you a hands-on experiment. When students come to school they are excited to go to his class because he makes class fun. He said I came to America because the education is better and he got to view the world in a different perspective. He can t wait to see what the years have to come at Brawley Middle School All about Mr.Dodd Welcome to Brawley Middle School, Leann Dodd Mrs. Dodd teaches 8th grade math and science. She has taught before at many different schools including Woodland Heights Elementary. Currently, she teaches eighth graders because the students are more mature and she likes the subject matter. Her favorite subject to teach is math because it is very logical and she thinks logically. She likes Brawley Middle School and she likes the teachers and students too She was born in Salisbury, North Carolina. Lived in many places including Georgia, Kansas, and Greece. While in Greece she saw many things that were different then to what we do and have. She says that we are so used to everything being clean and modern, and unless there were major roads, they were made with dirt but most people didn t have cars away`. Electronics were extremely expensive and the man across the street from where she lived made a living by delivering wood with a cart attached to a donkey. Which was a hard profession because there weren t many trees. She has three children named Kara, Kaitlin who are twins, and Jack. She has a younger sister named Maria. Her husband is a Firefighter Crash Rescue for North Carolina Air National Guard. She also has many pets such as her 3 cats, Abby, Acorn, and Lieutenant Fuzzy Boots, a dog named Mollie, a rabbit named Luna, and a hedgehog named Pippin. Her favorite animal is a cat. Her favorite food is Scottish style fish and chips, favorite color is Kansas State Purple which is also the university she attended. Her favorite sport is hockey because her husband played it growing up and her son plays hockey currently. Her hobbies include playing video games, reading, shooting at targets, and enjoys riding motorcycles. Shows she loves to watch include Big Bang Theory, Scorpion, and Outlander. 2

3 All about Mr.Grace Welcome Mr.Grace Written By: Samantha Sickles and Haley Gonzalez. Mr.Grace is the assistant principal at BMS this year. He was a science and math teacher for twelve years. He has two kids, Jake (7 years old) and Max (5 years old). Mr.Grace graduated from West Virginia University with a BS degree, which means a Bachelor of Science, and he has an MS degree, which means Master of science, from the university of New England. Before he came to BMS he was at Shepherd elementary, Northview, and Mt.Mourne schools. He is busy but everyone is very open and nice, it makes things a lot easier The reason he became a teacher was because he had a science teacher in high school, he really liked so he thought it would be cool to do something like him. Mr.Grace hopes for all the students and faculty to have a great year. He wants there to be options for everyone. Mr.Grace was assigned to BMS. He likes it better to be assigned one school instead of two because he was splitting between two schools last year. Mr.Grace s wife works as an Optometrist, which is an eye doctor. Mr.Grace has been a pilot for 3 years now. He likes spending time with his kids and doing other things outside of school. Mr.Grace's favorite sports team is the Chicago Bears, he has three brothers, his favorite color is blue, and his favorite book is Into Thin Air. Thanks and have a graceful day 3

I believe that the teams strengths include their skills, attitudes, and their sportsmanship. -Paige Springman (Assistant coach) The girls on the team enjoy her temptation encourage them to be a successful volleyball player. Paige s love for the sport keeps her coaching. Why wouldn't i be a coach? It always makes me so happy seeing my players improve because of something i told them. For Paige s freshman and sophomore years she was an outside hitter and for her junior year she was a DS or a defensive specialist. Head coach Melinda Rothwell has been coaching for about ten years now, Each team has improved in their own special ways, the 7th grade team has become comfortable in their positions, and the 8th grade team has seen certain players get better and better. 10 The new school year has already set off The New School Year The teachers and students have agreed that this year has been going great and they all like the new MacBooks Many of the students like all their teachers and classmates. Most teachers had no complaints about the older WIN classes being cancelled. Some of the students are happy that some of the older WIN classes are cancelled, while others thought that they should have stayed. The teachers agree that the quickness of the MacBooks is big help on getting information faster, but some say that since the teachers don t know their students passwords it causes problems when the students forget their passwords. Teachers say that since there are so many computer problems it takes away from the learning. Some students also agree that with all the complications it makes learning harder. The 6th graders agree that middle school is much better than elementary school and the food is better and most of the students like their WIN classes. Some students don t enjoy having MacBooks, because they like paper and pencils better. Most students enjoy having the MacBooks because of the advantages. 12 Dr.Oz field trip is here Interactive Health s Field Trip to See Dr. Oz at Mooresville High School Dr. Oz was here to do fund raising for the Health Reach Clinic in downtown Mooresville. He met with over five hundred students at Mooresville high school and answered questions about teenagers and their health. The experience was awesome because not only did he get up and speak to the students directly after he spoke everyone. He went down into the audience and took pictures with the kids. We were invited by Dr. Oz because of our interactive health program at school and because of our FITNESS program Mount Morne IB and Troutman Middle also got to go. " We had approximently 100 students represent Iredell Statesvilles schools at this event. Cameron Deas spoke on stage with Dr. Oz. Outside after wards Dr. Oz Cameron and Grant Hasting were interviewed online with him. He talked about how teens can stay healthy and what they can do at home. He told students to go talk to their parents and see what is in their cabinets. " It was a wonderful experience to participate in a great event, and open a new door to the student lives in learning about staying healthy. 12
