2 Women s Club The Village of Wordens Pond Women s Club met at the Clubhouse on Thursday, July 9, 2015 at 7 PM. President Lois suggested that each member share a little something about her background, interests, hobbies and/or whatever she wished. Lois started the round. Then each member in attendance shared brief autobiographies. We are an eclectic group with many similarities and differences. The one common factor is that everyone loves this village with some members who go way back and some who are brand new to our community. A trip to Granite Theater in Westerly sometime between October 9 th and November 13 th is being considered by the membership. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is featured and Lois will check to see if matinees are available on weekends. The Women s Club will sponsor a bake sale in early September in conjunction with VWP Association s annual yard and crafts sale. Members are requested to bake goodies. Our next meeting is scheduled on Thursday, August 13 th at 7 PM and will feature a wine tasting program which includes appetizers. New Club! The Resminis are starting a club called, "Bring Your Own Craft" Club! It will meet twice a month at the Clubhouse from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Just bring a craft of your choice to work on. It's that simple. And it's free! Please call Cheryl Resmini at or at to let her know if you are coming to the first Club meeting. The dates for August will be the 11th and the 25th. August Dates 8/9 Private Party 2:00 pm on 8/11 VWPHOA Board 7pm + Crafts 6:30-8 pm 8/13 Women's Club 7 pm 8/14 TGIF 5-8 pm 8/25 Crafts 6:30-8 pm 8/28 TGIF 5-8 pm New Time for Bean Bag is 6 pm
3 By Nina Driscoll Gardener s Corner OF BEETLES AND WINTER VEGGIES Beetles: Who would think those gorgeous iridescent creatures known as Japanese beetles capable of wreaking such destruction in your garden. This summer, you may have noticed their increased presence, dining on your roses and clematis, and a whole host of other plants, including crabapple and cherry trees. If you haven t spotted them munching brazenly in the open, you can recognize their calling cards: lace-like leaves and severely eaten flowers. As if that isn t enough, they morph into grubs that chew your grass roots to death. The most effective prevention is to discover early scouts in June, casing the neighborhood. It s easy to destroy these early arrivals, and even the hoards that follow if those scouts are allowed to report home. Approach in early morning while they are still groggy from cool air, and shake them into a bucket of soapy water. The best and safest treatment in the long run is milky spore powder, available at most nurseries. Apply to the lawn in early fall, while the grubs are greedily feeding, in a grid pattern about four feet apart. Don t spread or spray the powder, but water it in gently for about fifteen minutes. While it may take a couple of summers to become effective, one application will last ten or more years. Milky spore is very specific, infecting only the destructive grubs of Japanese beetle, Asiatic garden beetle, and European chafer beetle. It does not affect earthworms, or any other living creatures, and does not contaminate runoff water. It will not work if another grub killer is used. Fall and Winter Veggies: It s not too late to start seeds of a few select vegetables. Two of my favorites are kale and mache (corn salad) because, with just a little protection, they can last the whole winter and sometimes into spring. Kale, reported to be the most nutritious of all vegetables, has become a favorite for smoothies. Place them in the bottom of a blender, with bananas and other fruit on top (half an orange adds a nice flavor), ginger, and water to just below the final level. Voila: a health drink, and for those not sold on the bitterness of kale, completely masking its taste.
